    3. Hi Mike Having things automatically included on your Ancestry tree does not guarantee the accuracy of the information. If you downloaded this on to a FH tree there could many duplicates which you may have to sort out. That itself will be very time consuming. I have never checked my tree on Ancestry so have no idea if there have been any automatic additions. Even if there were I don't think I would be happy with that as I would like to know what has been added. I just follow any hints that turn up non Ancestry and check these for their accuracy. The only way you can be accurate abut anything is if you check them yourself even then you can't be 100% sure. But if I were not happy about anything then I just ignore the details. If you have a large number of these you could write a plugin to search the note fields for Age and move the data to the correct field in the event and if all your RESI events are census you could also update them to use the Census date again with a plugin. 3. Is there any way of converting the Gedcom files downloaded from Ancestry’s Family Tree program into standard Gedcom format which will load cleanly into Family Historian? Although the tree structure is largely correct, a lot of the Events, Attributes and Source Allocations are incorrect (as far as my understanding of Gedcom Standards is concerned) For example a Census record from 1901 1 RESI Age: 42Relation to Head of House: Prisoner 2 DATE 1901 2 PLAC St Albans, Hertfordshire, England 2 SOUR @[email protected] 3 PAGE Class: RG13; Piece: 1312; Folio: 158; Page: 3 3 _APID 1,7814::7664283 Bad enough that the Date is incomplete (year only) and the Place is incomplete (Not County Jail, St Albans, etc.), but the records are rejected anyway with this error message l.30 - INFO ONLY: Detected & fixed field format error (data moved to Note Field): "1 RESI Age: 42Relation to Head of House: Prisoner" (because RESI does not take any qualifying data) Tried raising this with Ancestry, but their reply was basically very dismissive, Hoping FHUG will be more helpful :) Clive

    3. This is interesting. I don't however use flags and icons to show that I have text information of records/events. I use icons to indicate that I have the source image linked in. For me the images are my sources. If the icon is not showing that means that I still need to obtain the image even if I already have the date and place. Trevor Rix ------------------------ Trevor said <snippet> - Assign BMD flags as appropriate. - Set BMD icons associated with those flags to display on diagrams. <snippet> Expressions are far superior than Flags because once setup you never need to do anything else. You do not have to keep remembering to set Flags. 3. It's not the question that you asked, but have you considered this method which I think is better? - Make digital images of your BMD certificates and obtain images of baptisms marriages and burials. - Link those images to the people concerned using whatever method suits you best, so that you can call up those mulitmedia images at will. - Assign BMD flags as appropriate. - Set BMD icons associated with those flags to display on diagrams. When working in Family Historian I usually work in the diagrams, so it's great to be able to see at a glance what BMD evidence I have for each person. 3. Thank you for your suggestions. The way I store information is as follows: I use certificates as sources for things like dates, occupations, etc, but I do not want to display sources in the Records window. As I am preparing hard copies for family members, I display Record data by Ahnentafel numbers so I can quickly see which names to work on. I want to be able to see which certificates I have, so if there are gaps I can check if one is available. If a BMD code could be displayed against the name, this would make the job much easier, but I don't want it displayed anywhere else. I tried an undated Fact, but this shows up when I publish a report - the same with a Note. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: 01 January 2014 08:01 To: [email protected] Subject: FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS Digest, Vol 9, Issue 1 Today's Topics: 1. You can use as many of the above letters as you want in the single field. This means that you only need a single column in the main Records window or a single line on a diagram (or I suppose in a report) to simply show what you got. In order to use an expression you need to tell us a little more of how you record the information that you have a certificate, do you use a source with a type or certificate or something similar, if so you can check the value of the source type using the contains function. -- Jane. 3. Jackie I have created a single Custom attribute which I've called "Certs" and I use the relevant letters B, M, & D to denote Birth, Marriage or Death certificates I have bought/obtained or C, P or X to denote Christening, Parish Marriage or Burial. You can use as many of the above letters as you want in the single field. This means that you only need a single column in the main Records window or a single line on a diagram (or I suppose in a report) to simply show what you got.
