Cheryl asks: Q1 - Does the older version 3.1 and/or 4 work with windows 8? The Calico Pie Product FAQ says YES, but even some early V5 CD had problems with some Windows 8 installations. http://www.family-historian.co.uk/support/pre-sales-questions gives details. Q2 - If Q1 is No and I have to upgrade to 5 to work with windows 8 can I still copy over from my memory stick the tree etc even though it was done on v3.1? YES all old versions of your data will work with V5, but will benefit from being updated to V4/V5 Project format. BUT if you have customised Reports, Diagrams, Queries, etc then you must copy more than just your trees. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:move_settings gives details. Q3 - V4 is it just a case of purchasing an upgrade to V5 as opposed to the full V5? YES, the "V4 to V5 Upgrade" is all you need and simplifies installation, as prior versions do not need installing. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian gives details. I strongly advise you register for free at the FHUG http://www.fhug.org.uk and checkout all the advice on these topics, which have been asked and answered many times. Regards, Mike Tate
Dear Listers, I know that v5 is the latest. Q1 - Does the older version 3.1 and/or 4 work with windows 8? I have just purchased a laptop which runs windows 8. I have saved my tree, branches and related pics etc on to a memory stick from my old computer. Q2 - If Q1 is No and I have to upgrade to 5 to work with windows 8 can I still copy over from my memory stick the tree etc even though it was done on v3.1. As its a large tree I don't want to risk losing anything. Q3 - V4 is it just a case of purchasing an upgrade to V5 as opposed to the full V5. Much thanks in advance. Kind Regards Cheryl.

Reading the digest e-mails on a small gadget can be very tricky. Please can people be kind to the poor souls who are screen deprived... Try to prune the amount of the original e-mail included in a reply to just the bit needed for context. Thanks /Ian -----Original Message----- Often quoted in full - including nested bits of the digest and previous messages resulting in really confusing message numbering.
Hi John, I am glad that resolved the problem. When you talk about backups, presumably that includes backups for your FH projects. If so, then checkout the FHUG Knowledge Base > Glossary > Backup & Recovery: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=glossary:backup_and_recovery Especially the section headed "What is not backed up?" and the Plugin "Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings". Hi Mike, Thank you for advice, I installed XP Service Pack 3, this has resolved my problem. If that does not fix the problem then an FHUG Forums Search for "mfc100.dll" found some other suggestions. It is always a good idea to search the FHUG website for previous topics or the Knowledge Base for advice. You do not even have to register to use the Search features. Simply display an all relatives chart as normal and then hide spouse boxes (the single box icon on the diagram tool bar). You can also easily do a custom report based on the Census Report, changing it over to just show the facts you want and then simply use a query to select only your blood relations to add to the report (you could even sort the report so very close relations appear first in the report. There are already a couple of queries to assist with reports to select only people needed for the two main DNA test types. If you do a search for DNA on the FHUG forums you will find several discussions on this. -- Jane. The nearest to a chronological report as per the Facts tab is a Record Detail Report - Individual. Alternatively, an Individual Narrative Report is more or less chronological. You could possibly get what you want based on the Standard Query - All Facts with a Row Filter to select the Individual and extra Columns for more details. I am printing Summary Reports for my cousins. How do I edit the marriage section to show the marriage date before the list of the children? Jackie
Dear All, I was asked recently by my doctor for health information about my family. I had already started on my mother's side as there's athsma and rheumatoid arthritis and I wanted to see where they both originated. Now I have commenced work on my father's side. I have a tree that shows each individuals dates, the age at death, what is recorded on their death certificate, plus any other major health issues they had in life (where known). I can pretty much play around with the features in Family Historian to make this happen, however I have had to create a separate file to do this as I want the chart to only show my blood relatives, and not relatives by marriage. It would be really great if Family Historian had either a health module or plugin where we could generate this stuff easily including an all relatives report that only showed blood relatives. Also the ability to handle DNA results both ancestral and health would also be great. Does anybody else think this might be a good feature? In the years that I have been doing genealogy I have met so many people whose only interest in genealogy is to research health history of their family (especially when they have started having children). Cheers Gabrielle
