The best way is to do a full back up onto a memory stick, and then restore onto your new computer. That way you still have the back up, and you have your project complete with photos. Anne asks: <snippet> I have created Pdf and jpg copies of Birth and Marriage records from the IGI index and the like and want to put them into the file in which FH stores them in and then link them to the sources which I have created. <snippet> Assuming you are using Projects, you do not need to know where FH keeps its Multimedia files, because it manages that itself. There is a great deal of advice in the free FHUG Knowledge Base about adding Sources and Multimedia. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/ for Family Historian and Ancestral Sources and Glossary of Terms. A good entry to start with is the animated tutorial for adding a Birth Certificate: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:recording_details_from_a_birth_certificate Basically, on the Source Record Multimedia tab you add new media and tell FH where it currently exists. FH then copies the file into the Project and creates a Multimedia Record to identify it. Regards, Mike Tate
Dear All I have created Pdf and jpg copies of Birth and Marriage records from the IGI index and the like and want to put them into the file in which FH stores them in and then link them to the sources which I have created. Can I have the filepath and name of the file so I can locate where FH stores such things? Can I just drag n' drop them in that file and then just link them to my sources. It is my first time of using sources ever and I am not using Ancestral sources this time - but will probably do that next time. ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne

It works fine but has been named "Brownsdon from Andy" on the FH system I wish to rename this file but can't find any instructions as to this. Regards and hope someone out there can help. John
Val asks: Is there any way in which I (or My History) can print out every record name in my large database as an alphabetical List and, if possible, also include the relationships to me where these exist? Yes, use "View > Standard Queries > All Individuals" and then "File > Print". Val says: I also want to print out one paper copy of the text I have attached to every entry in my database. Use "Publish > Record Detail Reports" and work through each one you want. Select all records each time using the central >> button and then click "Print". Val says: I'd also like to have a complete alphabetical List of my Sources on paper. Use "View > Standard Queries > Source Records - All" and then "File > Print". Regards, Mike Tate
Or open view in the tool bar Select Standard Queries from the drop down menu Select all individuals This will open the full list of individuals On the tool bar pick the ikon near the end 'save query in file' This will open a drop down menu Select a choice say 'save a CSV file. Prompt this and a question will opo up asking if you want it to include all the column headings. Once this is done you can save it again as an Excel file Victor On 13/02/2014 2:34 PM, Martin Allen wrote: > I've just run the all individuals query and copied the name, dates and > relationships columns to an excel spreadsheet. > At f0nt size 8 that produces 52 pages for 3727 individuals. I've just run the all individuals query and copied the name, dates and relationships columns to an excel spreadsheet. At f0nt size 8 that produces 52 pages for 3727 individuals. I could now print that out. All the advice you should need is in FH via "File > Project Window > Tips for New & Upgrading Users" plus "Notes for Upgrading Users". http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:understanding_projects provides more details. Essentially you need to use "File > Project Window > New Project > Import a GEDCOM file". BUT do read the help and advice first, especially if you have associated Multimedia files. Otherwise, the Multimedia will NOT get imported into the Project and you will have to start over again. I have a GEDCOM file of a branch of my family. If I click on it in Explorer, it opens in FH, no problem. However, it doesn’t appear in the list of available projects to open when I start up FH from scratch, presumably because it isn’t in a Project folder with the associated files. How do I turn this GEDCOM file into a project folder? Dennis
Paddy said: <snippet> Your Plugin "Check and Repair Media Links" showed that I have a similar problem with broken links in most of my other FH Projects. I think this problem has been self inflicted, when, in a recent fit of enthusiasm, I decided to 're-organize' the media files in my Pictures folder on the C drive of my Win 7 computer. Although this resulted in a neater and more logical structure of my media files, I see now that it broke the links between them and the Multimedia files in FH. Should I now abandon any further 're-organization' of my Win 7 Pictures folder? <snippet> It seems that you keep your Multimedia image files in the Windows Pictures folder rather than the FH Project Media folder. Thus any re-organisation of your Windows Pictures folder will need similar re-organisation of your FH Multimedia file links. I assume you have adopted the FH V4/V5 Project structure within the Family Historian Projects folder. If you are still using FH V3 standalone GEDCOM style then you are missing out on several V5 benefits. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:understanding_projects for details. The popular convention is to copy media files into the FH Project Media folder structure as Multimedia Records are created. Then you can re-organise your Windows Pictures folder without affecting FH Multimedia links. However, this does mean that many media files will be duplicated if you retain them in both folders. Similarly, if you choose to re-organise your FH Project Media folder structure then the Multimedia Records need changing to match. One big benefit of using the FH Project Media folder is that file links are "relative" and whole Projects can be moved, even from PC to PC, without breaking the links. The Plugin can help you repair links and move media files, but ensure you have good backups in case things go awry. Regards, Mike Tate
Thank you Mike. Both suggestions solved my immediate problem on my main FH Project. Some of the Multimedia files in my main FH Project have become un-openable. They appear as a St Andrew’s cross on a blank rectangle. When I click this to open it > Edit Media Item, I get the error message “unable to load object. Error on file open.” The original title is still visible in FH Multimedia, so I can find the original in my Pictures Library and thus restore it into my FH Project. Recently in a mood of ‘tidying up’ I had re-organized my Pictures Library and I suspect this has upset the links between FH Multimedia and my Pictures Library. I have managed to re-attach most of the Multimedia files which had become dislocated; – most but perhaps not all. Is there a simple way I can search the FH Project for any remaining media showing “Errors on file open” ? Paddy Buckley
Following on from that, try using the Family Historian Sample Project to see if that has any problems. If it is not listed in your Projects, then use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project Mike Tate -----Original Message----- I wonder if you are suffering from a corruption of your FH database? Have you tried running Validate from the file menu? There may be some problem with a particular section of your data. Also - do you have a backup file which you could try the queries on (obviously backup your current file first!!) to identify whether it is a problem with that one file, or a more fundamental issue with FH itself?
