    3. I'm an atheist but with a reasonable working knowledge of several major religions, so bear that in mind when reading the following. > "Baptism Record > "Any type of record or certificate that states the date and place an > individual was baptized into a church. > > "Christening Record > "Any type of record or certificate that states the date and place a child was > **baptized** or named." (My emphasis) Based on my understanding, this makes sense. Baptism is when the person is anointed with, or submerged in, water, signifying their entry into the Christian Church. Christening is where they are given their Christian name and it is made known to other members of the church. Seems to me the confusion arises out of the fact that these two events mostly occur within the same ceremony. As there isn't (to my knowledge) an overarching term for this ceremony it is sometimes referred to as a Christening, and sometimes as a Baptism. Atheists (and I'm sure other belief systems) often have a Naming Ceremony, which is analogous to a Christening. I'm not sure whether this clarifies or muddies the water further :o) Graham

    3. <<snipped>> This is quite a technical point, but highlights a difference between Christening (CHR) and Baptism (BAPM) in the GEDCOM Specification. <<snipped>> Technical it might be, but I like it! There's no sign in the GEDCOM Spec'n of any information about when the two items came into GEDCOM, so no sign of any explanatory logic. The "User's Guide to the New FamilySearch Website (December 2012" https://help.familysearch.org/kb/UserGuide/en/nfs/r_nfs_source_fields.html states: "Baptism Record "Any type of record or certificate that states the date and place an individual was baptized into a church. "Christening Record "Any type of record or certificate that states the date and place a child was **baptized** or named." (My emphasis) This would suggest the LDS view of christening is wider than their view of baptism as it includes naming as well. But why on earth the wider angle should include a definition of the child's family, I don't know. The only logical deduction is that they thought "naming" could include definition of a family, whereas baptism didn't. Sorry, did I say "logical"? (NB - the ceremony of baptism into the LDS church is a different tag again - BAPL not BAPM). As I said, I'm sure some people meant different things by the two terms - I'm just not sure there was any consistency in those meanings! Adrian

    3. This is quite a technical point, but highlights a difference between Christening (CHR) and Baptism (BAPM) in the GEDCOM Specification. Birth (BIRT) and Adoption (ADOP) events can have a Family as Child (FAMC) subordinate link to identify the Adopting parents for example. Similarly, Christening (CHR) events can have a Family as Child (FAMC) subordinate link, but Baptism (BAPM) events CANNOT. I am not qualified to explain why this difference exists, but the GEDCOM Specification says: "Linkage between a child and the family they belonged to at the time of an event can also optionally be shown by a FAMC pointer subordinate to the appropriate event. For example, a FAMC pointer subordinate to an adoption event would show which family adopted this individual. Biological parent or parents can be indicated by a FAMC pointer subordinate to the birth event. The FAMC tag can also optionally be used subordinate to an ADOPtion, or BIRTh event to differentiate which set of parents were related by adoption, sealing, or birth." Although that does not mention Christening (CHR), the later formal structure does, and excludes subordinate FAMC from similar BAPM, BARM, BASM, BLES, CHRA, CONF, FCOM, ORDN events and all other events: INDIVIDUAL_EVENT_STRUCTURE:= [ BIRT | CHR ] +1 <<EVENT_DETAIL>> +1 FAMC @<XREF:FAM>@ ADOP +1 <<EVENT_DETAIL>> +1 FAMC @<XREF:FAM>@ +2 ADOP <ADOPTED_BY_WHICH_PARENT> [ BAPM | BARM | BASM | BLES ] +1 <<EVENT_DETAIL>> [ CHRA | CONF | FCOM | ORDN ] +1 <<EVENT_DETAIL>> Regards, Mike Tate

    3. I have come across a number of registers spanning the 1500s - 1800s where the words Baptism and Christening have been used, apparently according to the preference of the vicar, and with every appearance of being interchangeable. Indeed, the Oxford English Dictionary defines the words as follows: *Christening: *1. Conversion to or reception of Christianity 2. The action or ceremony of baptizing, baptism *Baptizing: *The action or ceremony of baptizing: immersion of a person in water, or application of water by pouring or sprinkling, as a religious rite, symbolical of moral or spiritual purification or regeneration, and, as a Christian ordinance, betokening initiation into the Church. As far as Family Historian is concerned I would probably create a baptism and a christening fact for Sarah RAVELL because the events took place on two different dates but only one event for Catharine TYLER using baptism or christening whichever is your favoured term. I always quote each register entry verbatim in the 'Text from Source' field, so anyone else looking at the data would be able to interpret it without misunderstanding, regardless of whether I had used a baptism or a christening fact. I think perhaps personal preference is the best approach. All the best Sue On 11/03/2014 19:30, Guy Etchells wrote: > I have just come across this thread and wonder how you would add the > following from a Church of England Baptism Register > > Bottesford Cof E baptism register > > Sarah, daughter of William Ravell & Hannah his wife, born 18 September > 1797 baptised at Long Bennington, 7^th October 1797, christened at > Bottesford, April 12^th 1798 > > Long Bennington was/is another C of E parish adjacent to Bottesford > > Or perhaps > > Catharine daughter ofSamuel Tyler of Normanton in this parish & Sarah > baptised and christened October 7^th 1798 > > I could show with many christened and baptised entries from this and > other registers across England if need be. > The modern interchangeability of the words was not always so. > > Cheers > > Guy > >

    3. <<snipped>> ... Sarah, daughter of William Ravell & Hannah his wife, born 18 September 1797 baptised at Long Bennington, 7^th October 1797, christened at Bottesford, April 12^th 1798 ... The modern interchangeability of the words was not always so. <<snipped>> That would be my impression also. However, I am less clear that the two words were used consistently. For instance, the 1793-1832 register at Astbury, Cheshire, is, according to my notes, labelled on the original as "Christenings Marriages and Burials at Astbury since the 25th of March 1793", while the one immediately after (1833-1850) is labelled on the original "Clerk's Register of Marriages, Baptisms and Burials at Astbury - 1833". (By labelled, I mean a contemporary-ish piece of text, not a later note from the Archivists. On that score, I've seen instances where the same register is referred to as "Baptisms" in the Record Office's own catalogue _and_ "Christenings" in A2A. Or vice versa.) While it's nice to see both words on the same entry and so it's clear that this clerk meant two different things, I think instances like the Astbury register labels, suggest to me that other clerks might mean *different* things by the same two words. On that basis, it becomes pretty much impossible in the absence of other evidence to interpret the two words accurately. I could _guess_ that the first (the baptism) represented the core of the service (a private baptism???) and the second (the christening) was more in the nature of a reception by the congregation? But it is only a guess. On that basis, I shall put my tongue in cheek, sit firmly on the fence and label both events as "baptism" but put a note against the second referring to the use of the word "christening". Adrian B

    3. HI Shelagh, There is a great deal of advice at the FHUG http://www.fhug.org.uk/ which is different from this FHU Email service. How to (Re-)install Family Historian is particularly relevant: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian It is not clear what you copied, but you MUST use a downloaded installation file. It may be best to remove whatever you have copied as that could upset things. If the V5 Download you bought was a Full Licence (NOT a V4 to V5 Upgrade) then the V5 Free Trial download should work. But if you bought the V4 to V5 Upgrade then you MUST use the original download. The FHUG link above has advice about how get the download again from Calico Pie and how to archive it safely!!! Essentially you E-mail [email protected] and give the details of when you bought V5 and thee-mail address you used. The FHUG link above also has advice about how to move your Projects and your customised settings from PC to PC. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:move_settings There is the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin to help you. I had a long session yesterday and appear at last to have finally cracked 'sources' and am happy slinging in certificates etc. It has been an experience and I think I have ditched my fear of doing this. Very grateful indeed. ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne Mike Tate replied: "There is a great deal of advice in the free FHUG Knowledge Base about adding Sources and Multimedia. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/ for Family Historian and Ancestral Sources and Glossary of Terms. A good entry to start with is the animated tutorial for adding a Birth Certificate: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:recording_details_from_a_birt h_certificate Basically, on the Source Record Multimedia tab you add new media and tell FH where it currently exists. FH then copies the file into the Project and creates a Multimedia Record to identify it." Regards, Mike Tate
