I had the same problem. Mike Tate kindly provided me with a solution. Dear Colleagues, I am exporting my file to share using the FILE > IMPORT/EXPORT > EXPORT > GEDCOM FILE... I can select some points to exclude, like some notes, etc. But I was actually looking for an option to select which facts shall be exported. I wanted to export just Birth, Death, Baptism and so on. Any trick on how doing that? Thanks!
Michael, The answer depends a great deal on how you document other things such as Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates, Census Returns, etc. Consistency is always the name of the game. So if you use Source Citations for those other things, then use Source Citations for your text files. It also depends on what you mean by 'text' files, because you later say some include pictures, which is not possible with plain text files. Perhaps you mean word-processor (DOC or DOCX) documents, or perhaps PDF files? As other replies have said, it also depends on whether you want the details to appear in Reports. Reports can only include text from within FH text fields, and images from graphics files such as JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc. So to get text into Reports you copy & paste the text contents into say a Text From Source field or a Note field. If you want graphics files then convert images within the 'text' files to JPG or PNG graphics files. Alternatively, you use a screen grabber such as the Windows Snipping Tool to convert the entire document into JPG or PNG graphics files. If the documents provide evidence of specific events/attributes then try to use the best fitting standard Facts. Alternatively, use custom Facts, and there many ready-made to download from the FHUG web site. Some documents may provide evidence for a whole range of Facts, in which case create a Source Record/Note Record for the document, and use Citations/Linked Notes to link it to all the relevant Facts. Unfortunately, the answer is not simple unless you give some clues as to your normal ways of using FH. If you more general advice on the use of FH, document Sources, etc then visit the FHUG website where there is much advice: http://www.fhug.org.uk Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Michael Synge Sent: 16 April 2014 14:51 To: [email protected] Subject: [FHU] Text files I have a number of text files, copies of letters, descriptions of people and events, short family histories, wills, and so on, that I would like to include in my FHS files, but the question is where? <<snipped>> I have a number of text files, copies of letters, descriptions of people and events, short family histories, wills, and so on, that I would like to include in my FHS files, but the question is where? <<snipped>> I'm not sure there is a single answer, though Shelagh's custom attribute "Documents" seems a good bet for a single answer. Personally, I would consider how I would want the text to appear on any reports - or whether you were just linking them for, as it were, preservation and / or indexing with no real desire to see them printed. If the latter, then attachment as multimedia files would suffice. If you want to see the text appear in reports, then copying and pasting the text into the note for an attribute or event appropriate for the topic in question would seem sensible. Like the wills but differently. For instance, if you had a letter about someone's military service, it could go into a military service event or attribute. If there doesn't seem an obvious event or attribute, then pasting the text into either a note for a single person or a shared note is perhaps the least worst option. And possibly the answer would be different again if you wanted a web-site output. Adrian B
You could also add the documents as multimedia which enables you to insert any type of document with an associated reader program. Another advantage also is that you can then link to the same document from all relevant individuals, families, facts, etc David On 16/04/2014 15:25, Greenbee wrote: > How about an individual custom attribute called Documents, where you could > list all the documents for a particular person within the notes. How about an individual custom attribute called Documents, where you could list all the documents for a particular person within the notes. If the documents related to a family you could also create a family custom attribute for the same thing Shelagh -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Michael Synge Sent: 16 April 2014 14:51 To: [email protected] Subject: [FHU] Text files I have a number of text files, copies of letters, descriptions of people and events, short family histories, wills, and so on, that I would like to include in my FHS files, but the question is where? Thank you Mike and Victor for your advice and support, I am pleased to inform you I am now receiving my Project Files on both Laptops complete with Multimedia files. Mike I forgot to add that when you save anything on let's say your computer, the other equipment has to be switched on before any download happens. So if you save anything and the other, lets say laptop, is not switched on for, say a week, any downloads wont start until then. A little blue box appears, a circle, in the bottom left hand corner of the file. The circle shows it is being updated. The same thing happens with drop box and probably other similar systems. Remember when you helped me to re organise my FH Project files. I couldn't find the new FH on my lap top for sometime. It was a big file so took ages to appear on Sky Drive. Yes, good point Victor. Remember all the image files must travel across the Internet at whatever speed your broadband connection supports. Also the download speed is usually much higher than the upload speed. If the download speed is say 8 Mbit/sec then the upload speed will be about 1 Mbit/sec. So a 1 MByte image will take about 1 sec to download but about 8 secs to upload. 10 such images could take about 10 + 80 = 90 secs to transfer from PC to PC via SkyDrive. I am going through all the files marked with an X. I found that there were no images on my computer (hence the X). The images must have disappeared when I transferred details from my old computer to new. John, you definitely should be able to change all the files on both PC to "Available offline". But the PC must be connected online to SkyDrive at the time of the change. This is the normal and only way of working for SkyDrive/OneDrive in all other versions of Windows. There are some suggestions on Google that it may need to be repeated on each PC before it sticks. On Google there are many tutorials of how to do it using either File Explorer or the SkyDrive app. Has anyone else experienced this problem and can help John with a solution??? It appears to me a problem with SkyDrive. The problem I have is that on the 2nd computer none of the media files are showing, the media files are in the download folder, when I make a check on the Work with External File Links all the files are showing to be linked correctly and when checking against the main computer with Work with External File Links they are the same on both computers. > > John >
