Hi Jane, I have just noticed there is a course running on May 21st In Dillington. For family historian Intermediate and advanced. Can you tell me if there are any spaces available and do I need to have attended a basic course. Thanks Yasmin
Jane, Connie and Mike: Thank you all of you for getting back to me. When there were no replies I assumed it was because of the holiday weekend and that I probably would not hear until Tuesday so I was quite touched to have all your kind words today. Thank you Connie for your very kind words. I have stopped panicking now and been working on this since then. You are correct about coming back to it and having forgotten things - it happens to us all. Thank you Jane - I will aim to post in the forum in future - I keep forgetting it. Finally thank you Mike for all your advice, I did actually copy my project as I saw advice somewhere to do that to protect the original in case one messed up. I have been working on the tutorials this afternoon but yesterday with the aid of the tutorial I ended up being successful inputting one of my own families marriages. Today when I did not use the tutorial instructions I was less successful so I have 2 A4 pages of summarised notes on 'how to do it' so I will try again tomorrow but will also keep on with the tutorials as that is definitely the way ahead. Regarding the date issue - when I could not correct it - I think I had done something wrong but as I am unsure what it was that I did wrong, neither you nor Jane would be able to replicate it. I am a bit short on time to do the task I am on at present and hoped to skive the tutorials - a false economy and a lesson learned. Thank you all very much. ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Beryl and Mike Tate Sent: 04 May 2014 11:38 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FHU] Very Newbie AS Query Anne, As Jane says, it is better to post in the FHUG AS Forum. Hi Anne, I have not yet been able to reproduce the problem. It might be best to post over in the Ancestral Sources forum, as Nick keeps a close eye on that one, and might be better placed to help you. -- Jane. Jane Taubman | www.rjt.org.uk | www.taubman.org.uk |www.fhug.org.uk
In my previous email, I should have added that on the 'Edit' menu, the items of 'cut' and 'copy' and 'delete' are mostly greyed out and 'Review/remove individual data changes' are almost always greyed out and 'paste' is sometimes greyed out, otherwise I would have used delete or the 'review/remove etc' button to undo what I have done. Many thanks in advance for any help ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne

Also note that if you purchased a "V4 to V5 Upgrade" then the FH V5 free trial download from the website won't work. Calico Pie will E-mail a link to the installation download along with your licence key. If it was a "V4 to V5 Upgrade" then you will also need your FH V4 licence key (but not the installation download). See the FHUG Knowledge Base on How to (Re-)install Family Historian for full details: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jane Taubman Sent: 01 May 2014 07:25 To: family-historian-users Subject: Re: [FHU] Activation Key On 30 April 2014 23:05, Jeff Jacobs <[email protected]> wrote: > can anyone advise how I retrieve my activation key? > If you did not keep it safe, you will need to ask Calico if they can resend it to you. Jane & Jeff Forgive me for jumping in and adding a bit of paranoia to this advice. Keep all your important stuff backed up on an external drive which is not normally attached to your computer, that is, attach the drive only when you need it and, if you are as paranoid as me, disconnect from the internet while it is connected. Secondly make sure your licence key storage is secure. I use an Open Source program KeePass to store all this stuff. It has the advantage of being portable, so as long as I can attach my drive to a Windows machine I can run the program and retrieve all my passwords, serial numbers etc. There are many other password storage programs. In my one-name study I have a family from Churchill, OXF living in Cheshunt, HRT 1841-1881. In Cheshunt I have them with 4 children. Working another line I have worked back to the same couple with a fifth child. I have merged the two fathers and mothers successfully. At least it would be successful if the spouses and children window did not have two representations of the couple with one having the five children and the other having just the one child. Is there something I have done wrongly to get this? Is there something I can do to rectify the display which is annoying. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Paul R. Joiner

Jackie asks: I would like to include a note on the origins of our family names. However I want this to be general to all the persons with the birth name, and not attached to a single person or couple. Is there a way I could do this? Yes Jackie, there are several alternatives. You could create a shared Note Record and link that to the Individual Record of everyone involved. Use the Note tab of the Records Window or use main menu Add > Shared Note to create the Note Record. On the Notes tab of the Property Box, click Add Note and choose Add link to Note Record for each Individual. In most Reports you can choose whether to include such linked Note Records or not. (You can also link such Note Records to the Name field of each Individual, but these are not available in most if any Reports.) Alternatively, you could create a Source Record that not only contains text but allows Multimedia images to be attached. This can be cited by the whole Individual Record or Name field or any Fact of everyone involved. To add the citation select <whole record> or Name from the Sources dropdown list in the yellow sources pane of the Property Box. Then use the Add Citation button as usual and initially use New to create the Source and subsequently select the same Source. This Source Record will appear amongst all the other Source Records in most Reports. Regards, Mike Tate
