All I have is my dad Philip Fairbairn and he comes from a family of 13 brothers and sisters all residing and born in Ontario and Alberta. If anyone can help that would be great.

    3. Hi All I am trying to trace the family of my great grandmother Jane Fairbairn. She was born in 1847 and her parents were John Fairbairn and Helen (nee Ross). Her parents were married in 1842 in Coldstream, Scotland. There has been a strong connection with the army throughout the family. John served in the Crimean War and I have a copy of a faded photograph showing him with Jane returning from the war. I am also trying to trace a James Ross Fairbairn who is related to Jane in some way. James was born 1869, son of James Fairbairn. He married a Helen and he served in various regiments up to and including the 1914-18 war. He was awarded the OBE in 1919. Doug Peters

I am researching the family of James and Alice (Young) Fairbairn of Cove. James was the son of James Fairbairn and Jessie (Janet?) Paterson. He (James Jr) was a survivor of the Great Storm of 1881. Anyone with info on this family please contact me. Tara Hawkins BC Canada

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QdV.2ACIB/89.1.1 Message Board Post: I Have the book and indeed it was partly responsible for renewing my interest. From it I have gleaned 12 Fairbairn deaths in 1881, and a further loss at sea in 1858. I haven't looked at the Census yet. The possible Fife connection is very tenuous. One of my mother's sisters (they were Fairbairns) has a recollection that there may have been relatives of our family. I have now tracked our history back from Edinburgh in the last 100 years to Fife around 1750. We have a number of researchers around the globe. I think there is a pretty extensive Fairbairn tree available on LDS for the Cockburnspath branch, going back to 1661 in Innerwick. No connection to my lot yet, but heavily researched by someone and, similar to my family, many descendants in New Zealand.

Surnames: Fairbairn Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QdV.2ACIB/89.1 Message Board Post: Dear Keith, I was interested to see your e-mail. There were about 10 Fairbairns killed in the Eyemouth disaster: some were from Eyemouth and some from Cockburnspath. The proximilty between the Census being undertaken in the Spring of 1881 and the event in the October has meant that a cross connection can be found for most of the Fairbairns. A book has just been published with a name like "Children of the Sea" by an author called Aitchison which describes the background to the disaster. I have ordered a copy and am awaiting its delivery. This might give you more information. Why am I interested? My mother's maiden name was Fairbairn and her family lived in Berwickshire for part of the period from the 1820's to the 1870's. Unfortunatly I am unable to link into any of the Eyemouth or Cockburnspath families - yet! Perhaps you will keep me informed of your studies. I hadn't thought that there was a Fife connection. Best wishes, David Richardson, Derby, UK.
