    3. I'm research Fairbairns in Berwickshire, 19th century. Alexander and Peter Fairbairn, sons of William and Alison Fairbairn, born in 1852 & 1856 in Chirnside. A friend of mine recently attended the Highland Games in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He's a Henderson. He said at the Henderson Clan tent a woman had a book about Fordell Castle in Fife, and said there were many Fairbairns buried in the crypt beneath the castle, and that Fairbairns are a sept of the Henderson Clan. | know Fairbairns are also a sept of the Armstrong Clan. Had never heard, nor have I seen on any internet source, any hint of a connection between Fairbairns and Hendersons. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? Thanks in advance. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QdV.2ACIB/102 Message Board Post: This posting is in relationship to the above couple and their progeny. There appears to be some confusion over their son, Thomas who married Mary Middlemas (the aunt) and the son of his brother Robert who also married Mary Middlemas (the niece). THOMAS FAIRBAIRN, SON OF THOMAS & EPPY, married Mary Middlemas (the aunt) the d/o Walter Middlemas & Margaret Sinclair. Their posterity: Margaret Fairbairn Elizabeth Fairbairn Thomas Jr. m. Margaret Gilleis Walter Fairbairn m. Margaret? (I have no last name) Robert Fairbairn m. Margaret - must have had a propensity for the name of Margaret unless I too am confused. Mary THOMAS FAIRBAIRN, (THE NEPHEW) SON OF ROBERT FAIRBAIRN & HELEN MILNE married Mary Middlemas/Middlemiss (the niece) the d/o Walter Middlemas & Mary Dods, this Walter being the brother of Mary Middlemas the aunt. The posterity of Thomas the nephew and Mary Middlemas the niece is: Mary Mayme Fairbairn Hellen (Ellen) m. John Banwell moved to MI Christina Fairbairn Robert Fairbairn m. Maude Hesbon Walter W. Fairbairn m. 1st Edith Sanford, 2nd Daphne moved to MI Janet Fairbairn Peter Fairbairn m. Iva Moose moved to MI John Fairbairn, died childhood Margaret Agnes Fairbairn, died childhood Emma Fairbairn Georgina Fairbairn m. George Hansz moved to MI Hope this serves to solve some confusion - the census records for both the United States and Canada are excellent sources to check these families out. I have no additional information on her husband James Fairbairn. But I would assume that his birth year would be close rather close to Elizabeth's. The only other information that I have for their daughters in that Helen married a "McGregor" and Mary was never married.( I have no information on Christina.) Elizabeth's parents were Charles and Helen (nee Renwick) Newlands. They were wed 28 May 1858 in Edinburgh, Scotland. I wish that I could tell you more about the Fairbairn connection but, that is all that I currently know. Thanks, John

Repetetive names are quite common. In fact, on my side of the family (Acadian) there are what is referred to as "dit" names. For instance, Joseph Chiasson dit LaRiviere is the Joseph who ran the ferry as opposed to another dit name which might mean he was the blacksmith, greengrocer, et cetera. My husband's Fairbairns are from Edinburgh, Scotland. The names William and Margaret are very common in the line. So, you look at what you find, verify the source 2-3 times, and you have found "your" ancestors. Happy hunting!

    3. It seems that I may be a distant relative of Walter FAIRBAIRN, for 37 years (until 1931) coxswain of the lifeboat at Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. See http://www.elothian-museums.demon.co.uk/harvest/lives3.htm I think my g-g-g-grandfather Walter RUNCIMAN 1785-1851 was grandfather of Walter FAIRBAIRN, so I would like to get in touch with present-day descendants of Walter or his brothers & sisters, children of Peter FAIRBAIRN (b.abt.1839) & Elizabeth RUNCIMAN (b.1841) who married at Dunbar in 1859. Regards, Steven Gibbs, Guernsey.
