Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QdV.2ACIB/107.1 Message Board Post: Since the original posting, I got the marriage certificate for William Fairburn (b.1831, Ripon, Yorkshire) and Jane Atkinson (b.1839, Kenton, Northumberland). They married on 10 Oct 1857 in Auckland, Durham. His occupation was pitman and they were living in Crook. The certificate says his father's name was William Fairburn, pitman, and her father was John Atkinson, pitman. Witnesses were John Fairburn and Robert Fairburn; I assume that they were probably his brothers. I have found a William and Ann (? Robinson) Fairburn with sons Robert (b.1827) and John (b.1929) from Watton, Yorkshire. I am trying to find if there is any connection between them and if these could possibly be my marriage witnesses. Has anyone researched these families and could help me with them?

Owner from abt 1845 to 1879 was George Fairbairn, b 1796 in Haddington. I think it may have belonged to his father, Robert, before then. They were connected in some way to a Helen Burleigh, who is listed as a Hotel keeper, and she had a son John Burleigh who was later adopted by George Fairbairn. Is anyone connected to these people, or can anyone tell me anything about the Black Bull. George was married to Isabel Brown. She and John Burleigh enjoyed Life rent of the hotel after George's death. Hopefully, Yvonne

I would like advice finding ancestors of Robert and I believe that brothers and sisters of George went to Canada, Australia, America and New Zealand and got lost there! Laura Kemp, it is said in the family, ended her days with one of her offspring in Canada. My mother was Helen but known as Cissy after an aunt in Canada. William Ewert another of Georges brothers was a policeman in Hong Kong and had something to do with Knives and fighting. ANY family history would be appreciated. Roger

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QdV.2ACIB/100.3 Message Board Post: Thought i would let you know my interest in James Fairbairn and also some of the info I have. James Smith Alexander Fairbairn born 3 November 1866 at 6 Roxburgh Street, Galashiels to George Fairbairn (Butcher) and Christina Moffat Smith. He had a brother George born 1865 and died 1885, also a sister Agnes born 1868. George Fairbairn and my great grandfather were half brothers (same mother - Mary Watson). I also have two books which blonged to George as he has written his name inside - George Fairbairn, Butcher, Galashiels 1864. I couln't find him in the 1871 census then found his wife who was a widow with the children at her parents in Muirkirk, Ayrshire and as I couldn't find his death and Christina had registered the birth of Agnes thought he may have gone abroad as my g grandfather and his brother were in Australia at this time. I trawled through the Galashiels newspapers and found his death had taken place at Monte Video in Uruquay on 17 October 1869. I do not know whether he had been in Uruquay or on his way back from Australia. I have stamps from Uruquay around this time. In 1881 James was with his mother at Muirkirk working as an apprentice joiner but by 1891 was working as a Butcher in High Buckholmside where my g grandfather had properties and a butcher,s shop. He ! was married in 1887 (aged 42) and James was a witness. James married Elizabeth Newlands in Edinburgh 10 June 1891 (Her parents belonged Galashiels) and she was found dead in the High Street in Selkirk at 4 a.m. on 18 Sepember 1897 but there is no report in the newspaper. By 1901 James is living in 30 Balcarres Street, Edinburgh (Butcher) with his second wife Mary (Age 34) born Buncle with his two daughters. I cannot find the marriage but have found four Marys who were born at Buncle so will have to check them out at Register House. I did not know about his daughter Christina - was she born in Scotland? and I could not find any deaths - did they go abroad. James is the only male descendent of George Fairbairn Snr and Mary Watson (his grandparents) and his g grandfather was also GeorgeFairbairn. My grandfather knew CowboyFairbairn (I think his name was James) and I wondered if he was related to the above James. Cowboy Fairbairn allegedly married an American hei! ress and he built a ranch style house near where I lived but have not seen it. I think he died late 70s or early 80s so will have to check this out. This is a bit long-winded but hope it helps and look forward to hearing what relation you are to James.

(Lewisham was in Kent and is now part of London). I can't trace her brothers, George, John T.B, Robert and possibly a sister. Anyone know where they were born? Kate married John Battrick, a coachman. It looks as if it was in 1871 in Carlisle. After trekking around the North of England, they finally settled down in the Doncaster area. Kate's father was a nurseyman in "Edentown" in 1852. Could this be Edington, just north-west of Berwick upon Tweed? Do any of these details fit into your tree? I'd love to fit the puzzle together!

Kate and John celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, as did 3 of the 4 sons. Kate's brothers were George, John and Robert Fairbairn. All lived into their eighties. There was also a sister (name unknown). Kate's father was a nurseryman. Kate lived in Carlisle in her teens. Does anyone have any Fairbairns fitting these descriptions? I'd love to hear from you.
