NOTES FOR SIR JAMES FAGAN, MY ANCESTOR: The Fagan family originated in Feltrim, Co. Dublin, Irl. The ancestral castle, known as "Bullock," still stands. After some political conflicts, the family lost the castle and everyone was reduced to living in manor houses (hardly a drastic fate). James Fagan (our ancestor) regained favor with the Crown by becoming a land speculator both in the British Isles and here in the Colonies. He married Mary Bernard in Malahide, County Dublin, 16 Jun 1720, and purchased a manor in Glencullen (also in Dublin), where they made their home for a decade or so; after which they let the house and moved to an even more ostentatious residence in Ashford, County Wicklow, Ireland. By 1750, they sold all of their property on Irish soil and travelled throughout Scotland and England for about 5 years, during which time James continued in land speculation and was knighted. They came to the Colonies in 1755 with a monetary worth and social status that would place them among the Vanderbilts or Asters of more recent years. All of James and Mary's children eventually came to the U.S. James was granted land by his father-in-law in Ct., Mass., and what is now Riverton Twp., Jefferson, N.H. The earlier generations that came to the States seldom appear in census records. They moved around a great deal and did not make themselves particularly accessible to people outside of their immediate circle (including census-takers and anyone who did not swear unconditional allegiance to Great Britain during and after the Revolution). Mary (Bernard) Fagan's relative, Rev. George Whitefield, came to New Hampshire under James Fagan's auspices. ================================= SUSAN FAGAN AND GREENLEAF CLIFFORD INFO SUSAN FAGAN B.
