Richard Evans-1[1]. He was born 1665 in Merionethsire, Wales. He died on 07 Jan 1703 in Maryland. Notes for Richard Evans: General Notes: GEOGRAPHY: One of the most important issues to conquer while researching these families is discovering where to find them. It is less of an issue of them moving around a lot as it is the division and creation of states and counties within one geographic region. See the county formation maps at FamilyHistory101.com. 1776: MONONGALIA COUNTY, VA from Western District of Augusta, VA 1781: NW section of Monongalia became WASHINGTON COUNTY, PA and Greene County, PA in 1796 1783: NE corner of Monongalia became FAYETTE COUNTY, PA. 1818: EAST half of Monongalia became PRESTON COUNTY, VA. 1863: WEST VIRGINIA formed from Virginia ***** Birth date could be abt 1669 and death date January 7, 1702. ***** We have finally solved the mystery of who the "COL. JOHN EVANS" is who ended up in the Monongalia / Preston County area of Northern West Virginia & was living close to several of our Evans Families including our "EDWARD EVANS (The Drummer Boy)-1731+" !!! ( SEE EMAIL MESSAGE BELOW SENT TO ME WITH THIS INFO ) Also notice that this Evans line also came over from Wales in the 1680s (like our RICHARD EVANS-abt 1666 & his father) and also settled in the "RADNOR, PA" area (LIKE OUR RICHARD EVANS-1666 & HIS FATHER) !!! The "RADNOR, PA" AREA IS WHERE WILLIAM PENN HAD THE LARGE "QUAKER SETTLEMENT" - WHICH IS WHERE OUR "RICHARD EVANS-1666" SETTLED INITIALLY - before eventually settling in the Hagerstown, MD area in the 1720s+ !!! It is very likely that this "DAVID EVANS" Line is related somehow - probably "Cousins" who lived in the Quaker Settlement in "LLANFACHRAETH, WALES" in Northwest Wales !!! Mystery Solved for now. I will fill you in more as I learn more from the person who supplied this info to me. "Cuz Joe" Evans finlplnr2@earthlink.net (972) 612-6067 I have a David Evans in Radnor, Pa. He came over in 1684. His wife, father and mother died on the trip over. The father's name was Evan ap William ap Howell/Powell and David had a brother, Philip, who came at the same time. David married a Mary Jones, daughter of James Evan(s) from Wales who settled in Radnor also. They had a son, John, Who married Margaret ? and ended up in Va. Their son, John, came to (W)V and was a Col. in the Am Rev. Ring any bells? Betty Evans Riley September 2008 ***** >From Renee - January 2008 Hereshow that blindresearch went. I walked over to the last aisle of the book stacks in the genealogy aisle, pulled up a step stool and sat on it in front of a book stack, all dedicated to books on Maryland, which was about 12 feet long by 7 feet high and just stared at the books. I picked up a couple of books on censuses and found nothing special.... I searched through a couple of books on Washington County and found slim pickins..... And then I picked up a book entitled: The Maryland Calendar of Wills, Volume III. And there on page one I found the following: EVANS, RICHARD, Calvert Co., 7th Jan., 1702; 25th Apr., 1703. To wife Eliza: [from Renee: this would be Elizabeth Hall; until now we have known almost nothing about these folks] extx., 1/3 of personalty, dwelling plantation, part of Halls Hill, bought of brother-in-law Elisha Hall, and 150 A., Johnsons Place, during life. Test: Henry Cole, DanlMalraigne 11.282 Eureka! There it was.... Our 6th Great Grandfather really was named Richard. He really did live in Calvert County and his wife really was Elizabeth Hall. We can see this from the property that Richard bought from his brother-in-law, Elisha Hall. What else does this genealogical sleuthing tell us? At the time of the writing Richard and Elizabeth have one son, Samuel [our 5 G Grandfather], two daughters [Elizabeth and Ann], and Grandmother Elizabeth is pregnant with another child. [A cousin has suggested that her name was Priscilla]. Moreover we have learned that Richard had a sister totally new information to us who was married to someone named Walter Smith and that Elizabeth had a brother named Benjamin Hall. [Keep in mind that this means that we can now track down all these new people Richards brothers-in-law and Elizabeth Halls people and maybe we can push back into yet another generation.] We also learn that Richard was doing quite well for just having emigrated from Wales! Notice that besides his property in Calvert County [Halls Hill,Johnsons Palace],Richard owns property on the Susquehanna River in Cecil County called The Hope;Evans Range[on the Patuxent River] and Greenes Delight in Prince Georges County -- whimsical titles..... I like those better than, for example, 7141 Kingsbury.... I do remember calling our little place in the country [before we sold it] Evangeline. But, you know, our Richard was really something! We can only imagine that he must have left Wales because of some sort of financial difficulty... too hard to make a living in Wales....? Or perhaps a search for adventure? So he moves to America in search of a better life... and, boy, does he find it! In a few years, he accumulates enough property to leave something substantial to each of his children. Well... there it is.... a little glimpse into how we, step by step, piece together bits which tell us about our ancestors' lives...all those formerly anonymous Evanses whose DNA is found in the cells of each of our bodies.... ***** "Elizabeth Lucas 3rd child of Chas and Elizabeth Evans Lucas was b in Prince George Co, Md 11 Mar 1723, d 17 Oct 1805. mar in MD 1742 John Swan, Jr. b Ann Arundel Co., Md May 1721 d 1796 son of John Swan, Sr., and his wife Elizabeth" further down the page: In 1754 John Swan, Jr. conveyed to Thomas Foster 'Swan's Delight' which survey was part of the tract called 'Evans Range.' Elizabeth Lucas Swan waived her dower rights. John Swan had purchased in the yr 1722 part of the tract called 'Evans Range.' This as undoubtedly the portion of 200 acres of the 'Evans Range' tract that Richard Evans had left in his will in 1702 to his un-born child who was Priscilla Evans-Groome-McClain. The balance of this tract of 200 acres, Richard Evans had left to his dau Elizabeth, wife of Charles Lucas, and in Dec 1744 she conveyed her 200 acres of 'Evans Range' by Deed of Gift to her sons Richard and Samuel Lucas." from Chapter Ten [page 110]: "Elizabeth Lucas-Swan of Green County, Pennsylvania and Descendants" by Annabelle Kemp ***** >From Sally Nelson a family member - January 2008 Vine of Liverpool, landed in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept.17,1684.That is the ship that that his cousins came over on, if not, Richard and his family were not far behind....The cousins that Joe Evans is referring to are Robert Owen,b.1657,Wales,his father was Owens ap Evans,b.1616,d.1697. Robert and his wife Jane Vaughn, and his children, did come over on this ship. He was imprisoned for his beliefs and after his release, came to America. I got more info. On the Owen family ,but haven't posted that yet..He was a Quaker, I feel that Richard and his family were Quakers as well, but no proof. ***** >From Renee: Below: Iam going to try to piece together the pattern of the migration of our Evans Family based on these various sources. According to the book, about our branch of the American Evanses, Ancestral Trails: We trace our Evans connection back to Samuel Evans [our 5G Grandfather], who emigrated from Wales in 1730 [1692] and settled near Hagerstown, Maryland. According to Mrs. Eliza Jane Morton, Samuel was the father of 24 children by two wives [13 by his first and 11 by his second] Hugh Evans, our ancestor [GGGG Grandfather], came from the second wife. Isaac Evans said of Samuel: ....he was a respectable, industrious man; but never made an effort to gain property. He raised a large family and probably did not become wealthy. Think he was an Episcopalian. Think his family was raised in this country. Think our family has been in this country 180 or 200 years. He was a man of good natural abilities, and might have done well if he would. His descendants, all I have seen, were of common stature and abilities.[Note: I believe that Samuel Evans father was the first Richard Evans, but this has yet to be proved] Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland is where Hugh Evans was born in 1730. From Hagerstown, Hugh moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. From Cumberland County, he moved to Georges Creek Settlement, Pa, near Uniontown. This would have been about 1774. He then moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky near Paris. After 1795, he moved to Clear Creek, Highland County, Ohio, near Liberty Township. Richard Evans [our GGG Grandfather "started with his family from Kentucky in March, 1800] So: Hagerstown, Washington Cty, MD > Cumberland Cty, PA > GeorgesCreek, Pa > Bourbon Cty, Ky > Clear Creek, Highland County, Ohio. Israel Evans,{our GG Grandfather} [son of Richard Evans, son of Hugh Evans] was born in Hillsboro, Liberty Township, Higland County Ohio, He lived in the Cincinnati area, across the river in Ludlow and Bromley. But at some point he and Ann must have lived in Indiana, because our GGrandfather , George Robinson Evans, is documented as having been born in Rising Sun, Indiana. Was this when Israel was doing his medical training? George Robinson Evans had been quaintly described as: roving around, he knew not where....evidentially he roved to Gretna!! So, insofar as the George R. Evans branch, the pattern of migration includes: Hagerstown, Washington Cty, MD > Cumberland Cty, PA > GeorgesCreek, Pa > Bourbon Cty, Ky > Clear Creek, Highland County, Ohio> variously Rising Sun, Indiana; Ludlow, Ky; Bromley, Ky; Gretna, La..... And now with our generation the migration has expanded: Missouri, Virginia, California, Arizona, Alabama..... and who knows where else! At some point it would be great to create a graphic [chart] with a timeline and combine that with the pattern of migration... to give a sense of the time span involved in this migration. Maybe someone with more graphic design capability than I could take on that little project! [From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland(1868) - Transcribed by Colin Hinson ?003] EVANS FAMILY OF DUNKARD CREEK There were a number of Evans families who settled on Dunkard Creek, on both sides of the present State Line, and efforts to identify each connection ends in confusion. The following records are submitted because they belong in this collection, with a hope that they may aid someone in their ancestral search. The most prominent of the early settlers of this name to settle on Dunkard, was Colonel John Evans, mentioned in frequent dispatches during the Revolution. He was definitely on the West Virginia side of the line, and his family records are well authenticated in West Virginia. In the Swan-Hughes Bible there is found a list of names and birth dates of the family of Samuel Evans, who settled in Maryland about 1720, This Samuel Evans was probably the uncle of John Swan's wife. As three of the names of this list are found in the Springhill Township, Bedford County tax list for 1772, it is most likely that they came with the Swans or shortly thereafter. One of these, Hugh Evans, settled for a time in Fayette County and then removed to Kentucky, remaining in Bourbon County for a time and then in 1799, removing to Highland County, Ohio. Richard Evans seems to have stayed in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, while John Evans could be the man who moved across the Monongahela and settled on the State line. Here is the Swan- Hughes Bible record: Mary Evans, born October 31, 1718. Samuel Evans, born May 22, 1723. Sarah Evans, born April 5, 1725. Priscilla Evans, born December 26, 1726. John Evans, born November 2, 1728. Hugh Evans, born October 7. 1730. David Evans, born March 26, 1734. Richard Evans, born May 26, 1736. Thomas Evans, born September 27, 1740.
