Yesterday morning Ms. Clement A Evans died at the residence on Greene Street, surrounded by her family, and with the full hope of a bright and blessed beyond. Her death was no surprise to her ______ has been ready to ______(large portion faded too much to read). Mrs. Evans was known and loved by our people. It needed not the pathos of suffering or the calm resignation of the invalid's latter days to endear her to many here. She was loved in Augusta as she was loved everywhere in Georgia, and in many places in the South, because she was an estimable, heroic Christian lady, gentle among the responsibilities of the household and courageous in all her relations in the world. As the wife of a brave and gallant Confederate officer, she accompanied the soldier in many of his movements, sharing the hardships of the life, and as consort to the active and popular Methodist minister, she accompanied him in his charges and was everywhere ! the devoted, inspiring and noble woman. Mrs. Evans was a Miss Walton of Stewart County, GA, having been married about thirty years ago, at the age of fifteen, to General Clement A. Evans. She lived to be the mother of eight children, five of whom survived, among them Mrs. Wm. F. Eve, and Mr. Lawton B. Evans, residents and well known in this community. Last year General Evans was induced by the ill health of his wife to withdraw from the North Georgia Conference and move to Augusta. The deepest sympathies of the entire people go out to General Evans and to the other members of the family of this affliction." October 18, 1884: The friends of Rev. and Mrs. Clement A. Father of Good Roads in Georgia. By Prentice Palmer. The year was 1912, and the month was January. In the late hours of Wednesday, the 12th, fire started licking around the base of an Augusta home. The next morning the home of Judge William F. Eve was in ashes. The loss was estimated at about $20,000. Judge Eve was stunned. Not only had he lost one of the first homes built on Monte Sano, but also a priceless library, nearly 5,000 volumes of historical maternal which belong to his father and father-in-law, Gen. C.A. Paul Hinton EVANS was born 1866. February 23, 1902: PAUL EVANS OF MEXICO is Back in Augusta for Rest and Recreation. The presence in his old home of Mr. Paul H. Evans, brother of Mr. Lawton B. Evans, our popular superintendent of public schools, is a source of pleasure to many old friends. For 12 years Mr. Paul Evans has been a resident of the City of Mexico, and he finds many changes in Augusta since he left here in 1889. Before he left here he was in the employ of the Thompson-Houston Electric Light Company, at its plant on the canal, and in 1889 went to Atlanta for the same company. From there he was sent to Yucatan and remained a year, and from there was transferred to the City of Mexico where he is now chief engineer of the Mexican General Electric Co., this being the agency in Mexico for the General Electric Co of new York, which was formed by the combination of the Thompson-Houston and the Edison interests. Mr. Evans is off on a three month's leave of absence; spent time with his father Ge! n. Clement A. Evans in Atlanta; and is now with is sister Mrs. W. F. Eve at Monte Sano. He says that Broad Street has been completely metamorphosed since he left here (etc). [This long article goes on to discuss the weather in Mexico, and the price of Mexican silver and American gold, and how cheaply he can live in Mexico, Mexican products, salaries, President Diaz, etc.] 7 M vi. Charles Crawford EVANS (died young). 8 M vii. Clement Walton EVANS was born calculated 1872. He died 14 Jul 1916 in Guadalajara, Mexico and was buried in Guadalajara, Mexico. August 22, 1916: CLEMENT W. EVANS BURIED IN MEXICO. Mr. Clement W. Evans, the news of whose death in Guadalajara, Mexico, on July 14th has been received in Augusta, was the youngest son of the late General Clement A. Evans and wife, Allie Walton Evans. He was a brother of Mrs. W.F. Eve and Supt. Lawton B. Evans of Augusta, and Mrs. Robert Stephens of Atlanta, and Mr. Paul H. Evans of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Mrs. George Lippincott of Philadelphia. He left Augusta about twenty-two years ago to accompany his brother, Mr. Paul H. Evans, in the mining and electrical business in Mexico. He had been there continuously ever since, living in various cities in Mexico, and engaged largely in lighting mines in the silver regions. He was 44 years of age at the time of his death, and was unmarried. Mr. Evans death was caused by prolonged attacks of intestinal inflammation, from which it seemed impossible to get relief. His own sickness, lasting five months, and the illness of ! his brother's wife, prevented his leaving Mexico at the time all American departed from that republic, so that at the time of his death there were only five Americans in Guadalajara. His brother, Mr. Paul H. Evans, was with him at the time of his death. The remains were interred there in July 14th. those who remember Mr. Evans in his young manhood, will recall the splendid ability he brought to his profession of electrical engineering, his lovable nature and engaging manner. He was beloved by a large number of friends here and in Mexico had identified himself with the American colony in Mexican city, by all of whom he was highly regarded. August 27, 1916: There is another article where the writer says he saw the letter Paul wrote his brother Lawton at the time of Clement's death. I will only repeat part of it: There were but five Americans in the city. Other than his kinsmen, Mr. Paul Evans knew no one of them. The Mexicans were not friendly to the Americans. The Evanses were among strangers. The Sisters of Mercy came to them, and they attached by the bedside of his brother, nursed him with attention and devotion, and prayed for him until he died. 9 F viii. Martha Lucy EVANS "Lucy"1 was born 1879. She died 1962 (need to verify). On October 22, 1907, Doctor Stephens was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Evans. Mrs. Stephens is a daughter of the late Gen. Clement A. Evans, one of Georgia's most distinguished sons. Doctor and Mrs. Stephens have three children : Allie Walton, Emma Simpson and Robert Grier, Jr. As a broad-minded, conscientious citizen, Doctor Stephens keeps well informed concerning all that affects Atlanta's future and in voting for public officials he is careful as to their efficiency. Like his father before him, he is a democrat. He holds membership in the patriotic order of Sons of Veterans, and with his family belongs to the Presbyterian Church.
