They were taken from the Hemphill jail about 1 o'clock last night by a determined mob of about 200 men. Six of them in all were taken out, and they were the negroes charged with the murder of Hugh Dean, which occurred at Rockhill church, near Geneva, two weeks ago Saturday night. One of the negroes taken by the mob tried to escape and was shot. Nine negroes killed in Sabine County within the past two weeks is the known record, and two white men within the past two weeks. Both white men, Hugh Dean and Arie Johnson, were among the most prominent families in Sabine County, and were prominently connected throughout this section. The six negroes taken from the jail last night were: Jerry Evans, aged about 18 years, Will Johnson, about 20 years, Moss Spellman, about 22 years, Cleve Williams, about 20 years and Will Manuel, 30 years. "Rabbitt" Bill McCoy, a negro about 40 years old, was killed last night in front of the home of Arie Johnson, and a pistol was found full cocked by the side of his body. Williams, whose age was about 20 years, was taken out by the mob, but slipped the ropes from his neck and hands and made an attempt to escape. He was shot. The body of Hardy Evans, one of the principals of the Dean murder, is reported as having been found on the Hemphill and San Augustine Road, about half-way between the two places. A negro whose name cannot be ascertained is reported as being killed, but there are many wild rumors afloat of other negroes having been killed in the county. At the present time these nine are the only ones whose names can be given with any degree of certainty. It is believed that all of them were connected with the killing of either Hugh Dean or Arie Johnson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
