Back on July 4th I made a request of Rootsweb for a new mailing list which would be more specific to our family's particular line than the general mailing list. I figured it would allow us to do more deep and penetrating research without subjecting all non related members to our efforts. I was going to call this list: EVANS-MDPAKYOHINLA@rootsweb.com because that gave an indication of just what we are researching. I was going to invite all members that I know who are doing this research and I was going to make an announcement on this list for those I do not know about. I was also going to make announcements on other Rootsweb lists which concentrated on the surnames of all those allied families who married into our Evanses. Were any significant discoveries to be made from the new list, I would, as list administrator, forward these to the general Evans list; so the two lists would not be disconnected. But, what happened is that I got a message from Rootsweb saying that the proposed list was too specific and they weren't being that specific anymore. [There are so many affiliated surnames that I can't imagine this list being too narrow.] Now what to do? I thought that perhaps changing it to Evans-MDPAKYOH might broaden it a bit and not narrow it to the folks who went on to IN and LA. I have not heard back from them about that, but I am not hopeful. Some have suggested that I go to Google groups and I am considering that, but since Rootsweb totally centers on genealogy and since I have my Degruy list on Rootsweb, I would rather be consistent. Rootsweb said that maybe I'd like to choose a state: Evans-OH... but that leaves out all the MD and PA and KY influences. So, does anyone have any ideas about this? I am befuddled. Renee
Hi Renee, I don't think that selecting a state (OH for example since that is the one you mentioned) would necessarily "leave out" the MD, PA, KY, IL, LA, or any other states influences where this EVANS group started out from, passed through, or ended up. I think you could do one of two things. Either name the list for the earliest Evans ancestor who arrived in the U.S. and then add "and all descendent branches", or just make it state specific as RootsWeb suggested and state very clearly in the list description that your real objective is to include in it, all of the other states from which these Evans' families either came from, ended up, or just passed through. Just an idea. Hope you can work something out. I, too, like the idea of having the list on RootsWeb.
