Thought someone on the Evans list might know who this is: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Athens Messenger, Sept. 28, 1930 SKELETON OF OPERA HOUSE IS REMINDER Plays In Those Days Were Different, Pomeroyans Recall. By C. A. Hartley, Messenger Staff Writer Pomeroy, Sept. 27. - The Pomeroy Opera House which stands a three story gaunt and condemned brick building on Second Street, a few doors east of the Courthouse, is a grim reminder of the flight of time, and the effects of the time's gnawing tooth. Forty-one years ago, on the fifth of the coming December, that structure, new, beautiful and complete, was thrown open to the public. Lizzie EVANS and her company, in "Our Angel," dedicated the new playhouse, which was one of the high spots in the history of the town. The admission was $2.60 per ticket for the first night and on the second night the price dropped to $1. The new playhouse was crowded even to the balcony, the play was a beautiful presentation of the sweetness and purity of womanhood, with the closing act revealing to a marked degree the splendor and faithfulness of that virtue which characterized young womanhood of those days. Plays then were quite different from the shows one sees today. The old structure has fallen into decay and is haunted mostly by memories. The hands that erected the building have long since lain aside their tools. George BAUER and his corps of splendid masons, whose mechanical genius erected out of brick, stone and mortar the then splendid structure, and the late George WEHO and C. A. M. ARNOLD and other carpenters did the finishing work. The building was erected by a company, the members of which have all passed on, and a few are left who witnessed the first play in the building with the elfin Lizzie EVANS as the leading lady.
