Gwynedd Friends Meeting Historical Notes Descendants of Ievan known as Evan Robert Lewis The Evans family of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania Generations: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Introduction from H.M. Jenkins (1897) It is intended to present, here, systematically, all the ascertained facts concerning Thomas, Robert, Owen, and Cadwallader Evans, of Gwynedd, and their descendants. The details given are by no means complete: some of the branches of the family could not be traced beyond the early generations; and in some cases information asked for was not furnished; yet the mass of facts given is extensive, and may serve as the basis for fuller work by any one who is particularly interested in the family. The origin of the Evans family, in Wales, is indicated by notes given on a following page by the late Mrs. William Parker Foulke, the ancestress of her husband having been the daughter of Robert Evans. Her facts are drawn from a very elaborate family document prepared by the late Rowland E. Evans, son of Cadwalader of Philadelphia. It traces the descent of the four brothers of Gwynedd back to Mervyn Vrych, King of Man, who was killed in battle with the King of Mercia, A.D. 843. Mervyn married Essylt, daughter and sole heiress of Conan Tyndaethwy, King of Wales (who d. 818 or 820.) Both Mervyn and Essylt traced their descent from Lludd, King of Britain, brother of Caswallon, the chief who resisted the invasion of Caesar, before the Christian era. Passing over, however, a number of intermediate generations, from Mervyn Vrych, the following may be noted: David Goch, of Penllech, appears to have been a lessee of crown lands in Caernarvonshire, in the 18th year of Edward II., and to have been living on November 9, 1314. He m. Maud, dau. of David Lloyd (who traced descent from Owen Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd), and had three sons, one being Ievan Goch, of Graianoc and Penllech, who appears as one of the jury to take the extent of the hundred of Cymytmaen, in 1352. His ownership of certain lands is shown in titles of that period. He m. Eva, dau. of Einion ap Cynvelyn (who traced descent from Bleddyn, Prince of Wales); and had two sons, the eldest being Madoc, who appears in the Cwn Amwich pedigree as "ancestor of the gentlemen of Ysbitty Evan," in Denbighshire. His son was Deikws ddu, who m. Gwen, dau. of Ievan ddu (who traced his descent to Maelor Crwn, head of the 7th of the noble tribes of Wales), and had a son Einion, who m. Morvydd, dau. of Matw ap Llowarch, and had a son Howel, who m. Mali, dau. of Llewellyn ap Ievan, and had a son, Griffith, who m. Gwenllian, dau. of Einion ap Ievan Lloyd, and had four children, the third being Lewis, who m. Ethli, dau. of Edward ap Ievan, and had six children, the fourth being Robert, who m. Gwrvyl, dau. of Llewellyn ap David, of Llan Rwst, Denbighshire, and had by her six sons and six daughters, the fourth being Ievan, known as Evan Robert Lewis. He was living, probably a young man, in 1601. He removed from Rhiwlas (or its neighborhood), in Merionethshire, to Fron Goch (probably in Denbighshire), and there passed the remainder of his life. He had five sons, all taking for themselves, in the Welsh manner, the surname ap Evan. Generation No. 1 IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT10 LEWIS (ROBERT AP9, LEWIS AP8 GRIFFITH, GRIFFITH AP7 HOWELL, HOWEL AP6 EINION, EINION AP DEIKWS5 DDU, DEIKWS DDU AP4 MADOC, MADOC AP IEVAN3 GOCH, IEVAN GOCH AP DAVID OF GAIANOC AND2 PENLLECH, DAVID GOCH OF1) was born in Rhiwlas, Merionethshire, and died in Fron Goch, Denbighshire. He married Jane ap Cadwalader. H.M. Jenkins: From the sons of Evan Robert Lewis, many of the Welsh settlers of Pennsylvania were descended. John ap Evan, it is stated, had several children, and one account says that two of them were William John, of Gwynedd (the purchaser, with Thomas Evans, of the township), and Griffith John, of Merion, (who d. 1707). This would make William John and Thomas Evans first cousins, and such a relationship is very probable. Cadwalader ap Evan, the second son of Evan Robert Lewis, it is stated, left no children. "Of Griffith ap Evan nothing is known." The descendants of Owen ap Evan are very numerous; they form the Owen family, the posterity of Robert (and Jane) Owen, of Merion, who came from Wales in 1690, and d. 1697; and the Cadwalader family are his descendants also, in the female line. Editor's note from the year 2002: Recently we have seen an internet line that says that the 1698 ap Hugh and ap Griffith families are descendants of Griffith ap Evan (see preceding paragraph). This line goes as follows. The Hugh ap Griffith who settled near Spring House is the son of Griffith ap Hugh. The Robert ap Hugh (married Sarah Evans) and Evan ap Hugh who settled near the present borough of North Wales are the sons of Griffith ap Hugh. The ap Hugh surname is now Pugh. According to our internet source, other children of Hugh ap Griffith include Ellen, Griffith, Edward and David (m. Mary Catherine Price).This is a different Pugh family than the family of Ellis Pugh of Merion and later Plymouth who was a Quaker minister. Both Pugh families seem to have largely migrated to Virginia (Loudoun, Frederick, Hampshire counties) and points south in the early 1700s. See Peugh family history for more. It appears to have hundreds if not thousands of names going back to the early middle ages for several lines. It also supplies some missing names for spouses. According to this genealogy the spouse of Evan Robert Lewis is Jane verch Cadwalader (with more ancestors for Jane provided). Evan ap Evan was the father of the four brothers who came to Gwynedd in 1698 (and of Sarah, their sister, who came with them and m. Robert Pugh). He married (2) HANNAH DAVIES, widow of Ellis Davies, November 14, 1722 in Goshen, Chester Co., PA. She died 9th mo. 29, 1741 in Of Goshen, Chester Co., PA, aged 85 years. Notes for THOMAS EVANS: Along with William John, Thomas in 1697 came ahead of the rest of the Welsh party and purchased Gwynedd twp from Robert Turner. Thus, the other settlers received deeds from him and John in 1699 for their land. He settled in 1698 on the land in today's Upper Gwynedd township just above Swedesford Road. His property extended from Swedesford Road to Prospect Ave (North Wales) and from the Whitpain to the Montgomery twp. lines. See his land patent as given by H.M. Jenkins. An old Evans home stands today where he lived about a half mile up Sumneytown Pike from the Meetinghouse (before one gets to the borough of North Walses) on the northeast side of the road. H.M. Jenkins (1897): eldest of the four brothers, he immigrated from Wales in 1698. He owned a long, skinny piece of land in todays Lower Gwynedd township that stretched from the Montgomery to the Whitpain township lines. It was also to the Spring House side of Evans Rd. to about Brushtown Rd. and consisted of 538 acres. The will of Roger Roberts, 1720, mentions his son John Rogers as then living." 10. He married ANNE REYNALD. Note: Howard Jenkins (1897) has the son of John ap Evan as the William John of Gwynedd, but the editor has chosen this alternate line instead. However, I am not expert on either line, and am guessing that this more modern (i.e. from the internet, 2001) line has some substantiation, as otherwise it appears to follow Jenkins. The idea that William John of Gwynedd was a first cousin to the Evans brothers is attractive. Child of WILLIAM JOHN and ANNE REYNALD is: 31. i. JOHN13 WILLIAMS, b. May 17, 1670; d. June 13, 1740. 11. She married ROBERT CADWALLADER Abt. 1670 in Wales. He was born Abt. 1650 in of Bala, Merionethshire, Wales, and died in PA. Notes for ROBERT CADWALLADER: Came to PA about 1700, but he and his wife did not survive long here. He is referred to as "late of Gwynedd" in the marriage certificate of his daughter Elizabeth. Tradition is that none of the Roberts were Friends at the time of their immigration, but that they joined with the Friends about 1700, soon after immigrating. By this marriage, the Evans brothers are first cousins of the mother of the main Roberts line that settled in Gwynedd. Children of JANE EVAN and ROBERT CADWALLADER are: i. MARGARET13 ROBERTS. 32. ii. More About HUGH EVANS "of Gwynedd": Property: 1719, Received a deed for 275 A land from his father in the northeast part of Robert's original tract - the part next to the meeting-house. He lived probably at his father's house, now (1884) belonging to Silas White, and in his will makes provision for his parents living there. Will: May 02, 1734, Probated Oct 1 1734: He leaves to his son Robert, the west side of his farm, "with the buildings and improvements; extending eastward to a fence about 20 perches westward of the Great Road," and to his son Jesse the remainder of the farm, eastward of this fence. He names his sons Hugh, jr., and Edward, and daughters Anne, Sarah, and Mary. He appoints his wife executrix, and names as trustees for his minor children, his brother-in-law, Robert Roberts, his cousins, Evan Evans, Owen Evans, John Evans, and Thomas Evans; and John Jones. Margaret, his widow, m. 1747, Robert Jones, of Merion. Children of HUGH EVANS and MARGARET ROBERTS are: i. ROBERT14 EVANS, b. July 26, 1720. ii. ANN EVANS, b. July 26, 1720; m. BENJAMIN DAVIDS. iii. Jenkins (1897): "The precise name of the head of the Hank family who thus removed, is uncertain, but Mr. David Lincoln, of Birdsboro, Berks county, in a letter to me, September 1883, thinks it was John, and says: 'He lived on the Perkiomen turnpike, six miles east of Reading, in Exeter township, and within half a mile of Mordecai Lincoln, great-great-grandfather of the President. This John Hank, with John and Benjamin Lincoln, moved to Fayette county, and from there Mr. Hank went southward.' As to a removal, first, to Fayette county, I do not know; but as has already been noted (p. 208), John Hank was in Rockingham county, Va., at least as early as 1787, when his daughter Hannah married Asa Lupton. His father and other children followed later. His name appears on a marriage certificate 22 Mar 1699. He bought land of Robert John in 1710 adjacent to the present borough of North Wales. His name is on the subscription paper for building a new meeting house built in 1712 at Gwynedd. His marriage took place in Rowland Ellis' house in Merion, afterwards the house of Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress. Jenkins, p 91: "Ann Roberts, who died on the 9th of 4th month (Nov 4), 1740 (She was seventy-three at her death.), was a native of Wales and had been a minister for fifty years. She was a widow, Ann Bennett of Abington, when she married Rowland Roberts, and removed to Gwynedd. The memorial of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting , in the 1787 Collection says: 'her first coming among us [1705-1710] was seasonable, for we having few ministers, the field before her was extensive, in which she labored fervently. ' Her usefulness in drawing out younger ministers is noted, and it is added that "she went pretty much abroad, visting Friends in this and the adjacent provinces, to wit, the Jerseys, Maryland, Virginia and Carolina, accompanied to the remotest parts by her near and dear friend Susanna Morris. In her more advanced years she visited Great Britain, accompanied by our esteemed friend Mary Pennel.
