    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DelorisWilliams87 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/9650.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You've got a bit of a mistatement here as far as Edgecombe Co., NC goes, it wasn't formed until 1741,while it was a precinct of Bertie Co. frm 1732 until then, so anything earlier would depend on exactly how long the family lived in the area. North Carolina had a lot of County formation changes over the years, and if your EVANS remained in that same area, Edgecombe was formed from part of Bertie, which was formed in 1722 from part of Chowan Co; Chowan Co. was formed in 1670 from Albemarle, the original County which became North Carolina, that was formed in 1664. A study of the will and deed records for EVANS in Edgecombe do show them as very early residents of Edgecombe and Beaufort Counties, which I assume is the same family as this: "Edgecombe County, North Carolina Abstracts of Wills, 1732-1792": #124- CHARLES EVANS SENR. of Tarr River - 1 June 1749 - Mar Ct 1759 "...being old and weak in body..." Daughter MARY BETTIS - cows and calves in remembrance that she is my daughter. Son JACOB EVANS - land in Beaufort County to which JEFFERS claims a title. Son BENJAMIN EVANS - five shillings. To CHARLES (son of my son BENJAMIN) - mare. Grandson JOHN EVANS (son of my son CHARLES EVANS and his wife ELIZABETH) -Negro LUCY. Granddaughter ANN EVANS (daughter of CHARLES EVANS and his wife ELIZABETH) bed. Youngest son, CHARLES EVANS - Negro GRACE and my title to land in Edgecombe Co. adj. the Tarr River and Town Creek, as well as the remainder of my estate. Ex: son CHARLES Wit: JOHN TISON, CHARLES EVANS, JR. If this is the correct family, then there is a will probated June 1756 in Beaufort Co.,NC for BARWELL EVANS, who mentions his wife SUSANAH,names his daughters SARAH EVANS (a minor),SUSANNAH EVANS; his "nefews" JACOB EVANS, BERWELL EVANS(who he says is the son of BENJAMIN EVANS); and 3 brothers JACOB, BENJAMIN, & CHARLES EVANS. Using that info, and checking through the earliest records for Edgecombe Co. that I have, this isthe first record I find for the family for Edgecombe: "Abstracts of Deeds, Edgecombe Precinct, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, North Carolina 1732-1758", Margaret M. Hofmann: pg. 119 - FRANCIS BETTERS of Albemarle Co. province of N.C. to CHARLES EVANS of Albemarle Co. N.C. 13 Jan 1734 200 pds current money of the province of N.C. 1400 acres more or less on the north side of Tar river, joining JOSEPH LANE below his well part of a patent to GREEN for 2000 acres. Wit: J. CROW, SAMUEL SWEARINGEN Reg. (not given) C.CT. (not given) My suggestion is to search for earlier records in the Albemarle County area which might indicate where the family originated on a deed record; a little history of Albemarle could help you to, here is a link to the USGENNET site with a bit of county history about for Albemarle/Beaufort area: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/nc/county/beaufort/BATH (scroll down to the "Short history of BATH COUNTY") Other page of info on county histories to check out: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/nc/county/bertie/ahistory.htm Deloris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. You guys are so far ahead of me and my research it is scary. -----Original Message----- From: Linda_Bishop@byu.edu To: evans@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, 6 Mar 2007 9:38 AM Subject: [EVANS] My Evans Brick Wall I, too, am going to repost my brick wall. Someone told me when I first joined this list that I was looking for a haystack. I keep hoping tha haystack has shrunk a little, but so far I have had no success. Perhaps today will be the day. My great grandfather, John Thomas Evans, left Wales and emigrated to the United States with his wife, Mary Perkins, and came across the plains in an oxcart company around 1860. John was born in Fishguard, Pembroke, Wales on 19 Apr 1840. He settled in Ogden, Utah, where Mary passed away. He moved to Adamsville, Beaver County, Utah, and married my great grandmother, Mary Ann Griffiths. John's father was Stephen Evans, born approximately 1814 in Wales. He married Ann Thomas (born approximately 1818) in Llandysilio, Pembroke, Wales on 17 Apr 1832. I do not know the names of Stephen Evans or Ann Thomas parents. I would really appreciate any help possible. Thank you. 1. [EVANS] EVANS in Fentress Co. and Pickett Co., TN
    2. I think it might be a good time for me to ask about my Evans brick wall again too. Does anyone know the name of the Evans who was the first husband of Fetna Davidson? Here is what I've found so far: Unknown EVANS born abt. 1803, TN died bet. 1828 - 1839 married abt. 1823 Fetna DAVIDSON born 1803, Overton Co., TN died after 1880, probably Clinton Co., KY Their children: Amanda EVANS b. 7 Jul 1825, probably Fentress Co., TN m. Pleasant BEATY d. 28 Jun 1898 Clinton Co., KY Alexander EVANS b. 1827 (twin), Fentress Co., TN m. Sarah (Sally) CROCKETT abt. 1848 d. abt. 1864, Fentress Co., TN Floyd EVANS b. 1827 (twin), Fentress Co., TN m. Margaret CROCKETT d. abt bef. 4 Dec 1867, near Fentress Co., TN Stokely D. EVANS b. 24 Mar 1829, Fentress Co., TN m. Louisa Poor in 1851 probably in Fentress Co., TN d. 3 Aug 1862, Fentress Co., TN Some say Fetna's husband was Stokely EVANS, Sr., but I have been unable to find any proof of that. I cannot even find any reference to a Stokely Sr. He probably died between 1829 and 1839 because Fetna and her children are shown in the 1840 census with her new husband Robert Richardson. I suspect oldest sons Alexander and Floyd may have inherited the Evans family farm. There were law suits beginning about 4 Dec 1867 to divide the joint estates of Alexander and Floyd in Fentress Co., TN Ch. Ct. Min Book A, page 351 and Book A, pages 378-380, but I have been unable so far to find the deed records for the property. Any help would be appreciated. 1. [EVANS] Evans in Montgomery Co.,VA; to Fentress Co.,TN; to Casey Co.,KY
    2. Evans researchers, I though I would put this out again, because someone new might see something. I can definitely trace "my" Evans line to Thomas "Jefferson" Evans (abt 1747-Oct.25,1832) who lived in VA, and married Jane Howerton (abt 1757-abt 1845) on Dec.24,1780 in Prince Edward Co., Va. Thomas and his Jane lived in Montgomery Co.,VA and they had 12 children there. Thomas was in the Rev. War (pension # W923), and in 1812, he and most of family moved to Fentress Co.,TN, where Thomas died. Most the Evans children moved up to Casey Co.,KY area, where I have a lot of data. Will share any info I have, and still have lots of blanks. Any cousins out there? Tim Tim Mattingly gtm.3@insightbb.com
