Hi Again, I administer 4 [3 of which are not terribly active; one is VERY active] websites on Myfamily.com. One of these is an Evans of NOLA site. I chose Myfamily because I don't have the computer expertise to create a site on my own. Another reason I chose Myfamily is that I've been told that Myfamily doesn't claim to "own" the material posted the way Rootsweb or Ancestry might. The Myfamily sites are private. Invitation only. General public cannot access. This is because any of the members can post information on the site so there has to be an amount of "trust" involved since there is little "control." If the contributing family members know each other, this isn't that much of a problem [but I guess that depends on the family, hahahaha]. So I don't know how this would work with a huge list where few know each other. What I'm getting to is... is this list too large to have a website of its own [The Evans Family in America, or something like that]? And would someone "out there" be able to administer? I couldn't because I already have so many. The Myfamily site is free at first and then you need to pay $29.99 [need to check on that; not sure what it is at the moment] for the smallest amount of space. Price increases as space increases. So for us to have a Myfamily site there would have to be a yearly collection to support it and I'm not sure everyone wants to get into that kind of "collection" hassle. There may be free sites. Probably some of you on this list knows much more than I. If we had a site of our own, I suspect it would be possible for members to publish their trees or ahnentafels, whatever, along with photos, memoirs, etc. Here are some of the categories on Myfamily: Front Page <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=s&htx=m&siteid=k8eNAQ&_lin=1> Addresses <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=m&htx=addressbook&siteid=k8eNAQ> File Cabinet <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=c&htx=l&siteid=k8eNAQ&contentclass=FILE> History <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=c&htx=l&siteid=k8eNAQ&contentclass=HIST> Members <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=m&htx=l&siteid=k8eNAQ> What's New <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=s&htx=whatsnew&siteid=k8eNAQ> News <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=c&htx=l&siteid=k8eNAQ&contentclass=NEWS> Photos <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=content&htx=list&siteid=k8eNAQ&contentclass=PICT> Reviews <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=c&htx=l&siteid=k8eNAQ&contentclass=REVW> Utilities <http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=s&htx=utilities&siteid=k8eNAQ> The Myfamily sites are not "pretty" and they do have their limitation. I have seen some very beautiful family websites. I've always wanted one of those, of course; just don't know how to do it. One thing that can be done on the site, is that members can post a photo of a relative and ask the participants if anyone knows who it is. This kind of ability can be very helpful. Well, I just wanted to put this out there to see if there might be any interest. Have a great morning. It's another beautiful day [dawn] in St. Louis. Okay, well, me being me, I actually don't know where my father was born, only that he was born in August 1959. I don't know my uncles' birthdays; I'd have to ask my dad. My grandfather travelled a lot, but I think he was born in Kitzmiller, Maryland (where all of my Maryland relatives apparently are) in 1933. I don't know how long he'd been living in Texas before he died, but he and my grandmother were either divorced or seperated at the time. I'm pretty sure that my great-grandpa, Wood Evans, was from Kitzmiller as well. I know that my great-grandma Edith (Miller) lived there before she died, but I don't know where she comes from. She was born in 1909 and just died this past year. What I've found on this site lists his parents as David Evans, born about 1870 and Ametia/Amelia (written differently on two different censuses, so I don't know which is right) born about 1875. I do not know her maiden name. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Dear Evans Listmembers, Is there anyone out there who knows enough about the Evans history in the US to shunt various lines into some sort of identifying groupings? I mean something like Evanses of Texas; etc. However that might be too narrow; so what about using one's own immigration/geographical descent lineage. Using my own line as an example..... Evans: Md, Pa, Oh, Ky, In, La That way... anyone who knew they had relatives in Md, Pa, Oh, Ky, In, La would know that there was someone "out there" who did too. They could then identify each place they might have relatives in common. It might be helpful to use this geographical descent lineage as part of our ongoing "signature" to whatever email we send. Or, is there some way to subdivide the general Evans category to make it more manageable? Can anyone more familiar with Rootsweb organization speak to this? Perhaps the easiest is just, as previously mentioned, to subdivide our Evans list on our own by using the Subject line: An example: Subject: Evans> Md, Pa, Oh, Ky, In, La -- info needed on Robert Evans of Louisiana We could use this same methodology in posting messages to the Evans board as well as to the Evans mailing list. An additional aside: I find it totally confusing when someone replied to an email message or digest simply by hitting "Reply," and without changing the subject line to reflect the current topic.... [For example their subject remains: EVANS Digest, Vol 2, Issue 75 -- and does not reflect the topic they are writing about; e.g.: Evans family in Texas] Also very confusing is when someone just hits "Reply" and thereby copies the entire digest in their reply. A two sentence message from them is followed by 20 paragraphs of the digest they have responded to. This uses up a lot of space, and totally confuses the readers. How to avoid this? In our responses, we: [1] delete everything in the digest but the specific message we are referring to; then we [2] change the subject to reflect the topic of the message we are currently sending. This makes searching or identifying what the reader can respond to infinitely clearer and easier. Just some thoughts, Renee Evans: Md, Pa, Oh, Ky, In, La
OK, if you can ask your dad, that is the best place to start. For others you can check the Social Security files, and after that go to the census files. After you have gathered all of the readily available information, tell us what you have found and possibly we can fill in missing data. -- TUCSON ARIZONA IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAINS MailTo:wmdwhims@comcast.net http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/h/i/William-D-Whims/index.html
I think what is going on is that all EVANS Messages that are posted on the Message Boards are gatewayed to the Mailing List. Those messages do say that on the heading where it says "gc-gateway", and then there is a little line that says that it is a gatewayed message. When you see that, they want you to reply on the Message Board because not everybody on the Message Board is also on the Mailing List. We have to be very careful about where one places a reply to a Message nowadays with Rootsweb new way that they are doing this, it is a bit of a problem, I think. I also agree, though, that folks need to put more than just a Subject of "Evans Family" on a Message Board or Mailing List which is for the EVANS family. It is unnecessary to do that, we all know it is about an EVANS family, we just need more info about what you may be asking or are referring to. A message will be more productive if one puts a name, a location including State & City, or Country & City, and some kind of time frame at the very least in the Subject line. We are all eager to help one another, but we can't do it without some kind of info to start off with. Private email is fine also. If that is what is needed for further proof of family names or memebers. If you get back to a message on the board, each reply is under or next to the message that is the original. It is a way for anyone to read about any name that shows up on that particular board. I also have Evans surname in my family, and each time someone posts I check it out. You never know who you will find that is related. If I am wrong, I apologize.
