I live in Powhatan County, and this was the territory of the Monacan Indians - relics have been found on the old farm that was the site of the original Huguenot Settlement, and also on other farms in the county. A friend of mine has a huge collection of arrow heads picked up on their land... and the lady who owned Monacan Farm before she sold it, has a huge collection of relics. Not too long ago - several years - we had an extensive drought here and the James River was at the lowest ever recorded - you could walk across the river and not get your knees wet! The Appomattox was a'trickle'... but what the low water uncovered was a Monacan Indian 'fishing trap' - dams in the river where the fish would be gathered together... I saw photos and it was amazing that it survived underwater all these years! Thanks for setting the record straight on this 'true' tribe. Author: donitaharrington Surnames: Puffer, Evan's Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/347.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It has been many years since I posted the whereabouts of Clarissa. Last year an Evan's descendant contacted me after reading a post and not knowing that Thomas and Virginia had adopted Clarissa. In the deep research this man hae received an e-mail from a twin who's mother had been adopted by thomas and Virginia. It appears her mother had been raped by Thomas. Further investigation showed that thomas had been a pedophile. His first rape that was known was that of his adopted daughter, Clarissa Carolin Puffer, in which he impregnated her. After Clarissa's baby died, she was returned to the Poor shouse where she died. Thonas raped a couple of more women, but it was his very own niece from England who he raped on the ship coming back from England that became his downfall. She did go to the authorities and her mother came over from England to testify that she was his niece. Thomas Evans ahd been taken to court once before for another girl's rape, but he was found not guilty. With! his niece though, he ended up confessing when he realized that his reign of raping had done him in. there was too much evidence against him and his lawyer advised him to confess. He was sent to prison, sighning over his property to his wife. He and his wife never got a divorce, but they never lived together again. June L. Author: mham1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/5225.1.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As you can see I couldn't quite give up the hunt yet. There is always one more place to try. I found that Vachel Evans is listed in Clermont Co., Ohio Twp., the same twp. as Henry Hudson's children: David, Edward, Joseph & Henry W. There is also an Eliza A., who could be a widow and a Jeremiah. The latter appears to be the son of a Benjamin Evans and Mary Gregory, whose family is from Brown Co. OH and NC. Further I found that your Laura E. Evans and William R. Martin were married in Union Co., IL in 1869, according to the Union Co. marriage records. Vachel was living in Union Co. IL in the 1860 IL Census. It seems like too much of a coincidence that they shouldn't all be related some way. It could be that Vachel is related to the Brown Co., OH and NC Evans family, but his birthplace is given in the death certificate as Cincinnati, OH. Vachel's mother is given as Sarah Davidson, b. OH. I haven't been able to find a marriage listed for her. That would answer the q! uestion as to who Vachel's father is, if we can find it. I just searched some more in the family trees at Ancestry.com and on about the 5th page I finally found a James H. Evans married to a Sarah Davison. They are listed as the parents of Sarah A. Evans, b. Jan 29, 1835 in OH. She d. May 3, 1912. She was married to Thomas Washington Upchurch of Fentress City, TN. I imagine that Vachel's parents are James and Sarah Davison Evans. They are listed in the "Grider" Family Tree. James H. was b. 1809 in PA and d. 1850. He was living in 1850 in Salt Creek, Muskingum Co. OH according to the census. My Henry Hudson and Joseph Evans brothers were b. in PA, too. Maybe that is the connection. I wonder what the "H." in James' name stands for? Sarah Davison is the daughter of James Davidson & Nancy Braden. She was b. 1807, OH and d. Sept. 5, 1856 in Fentress, TN.
