    1. [EVANS] Thomas Evans
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: kitsundling Surnames: Evans, Roberts Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/9753/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for more information concerning spouses in my Evans line. Thomas' wife, Sarah Martha Elizabeth Roberts is a mystery. It seems she lived from 1695 to 1803(based on Weik's history of Putnam Co. Indiana). I am looking to find who her parents were and if there is any historical information on Thomas Evans. The information I have is that he served as a provisional govenor of PA when William Penn left for England. Was her father then involved in the politics of the day? There is a William Roberts during that time but nothing to connect the two. Thomas was born 1662 in Wales and died in PA 1756. Any information would be helpful! I know a Daniel Evans, Andrew Evans, and Margaret Evans in Clay/Richland Co, IL and have married into the Graham Clan. The two different Elizabeth's is certainly a possibility, however. Author: bdf185 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/9746.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Linda (and Sally) Have either of you considered that perhaps Thomas was married to both Elizabeth Wood and Elizabeth Roberts? In succession, not simultaneously. According to the information that I found on the WorldConnect website, Thomas had 7 children born between 1783 and 1806 as shown below: 1. Bazil Evans b: ABT 1783 2. John Evans b: ABT 1792 in VA 3. Margaret Evans b: ABT 1792 in MD 4. Seth Evans b: 22 FEB 1800 in MD 5. Andrew J Evans b: 1802 in MD 6. Darcus Evans b: ABT 1803 in MD 7. Children Daniel Evans b: ABT 1806 That's quite a time spread for a family. There are a couple of long gaps between children. Not hard for a man (even an older man) to father over a 23 year period, or even a woman if she married young. However, the age of the first Elizabeth (born ~1847) would have been 53 in 1800 and 59 in 1806; rather old for child bearing in those days don't you think? My theory is that his first wife died sometime after 1792, and that he remarried sometime between 1792 and 1800. It's also a possibility that the 4 younger children shown above belong to a different Thomas Evans (not the one born in 1740). Comments?? BTW, my wife's line is through Thomas' son Andrew J Evans Dick Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [EVANS] Evans in 1587 NC? - Evans is a family of interest for the Lost Colony of NC.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: N_Percival Surnames: Evans Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/9752/mb.ashx Message Board Post: First the Lost colony project is a non profit Organization. >From the Administrator of the Project: Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is Roberta Estes and I'm the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research. (_www.lost-colony.com_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/) ) Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists. For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold. In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses. John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if so, who are they today? In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same. In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at _http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html) . Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following: 1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings, requests and research. 2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists. 3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies. 4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if so, who coordinates that effort. 5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that avenue. To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan. If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as well. If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at _restes@comcast.net_ (mailto:restes@comcast.net) . Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/ I will be on vacation from now until July 24th. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [EVANS] advice needed about creating another more specialized Evanslist
    2. As I see the problem with your suggestion, it would be impossible to make the list after the earliest Evans ancestor?because who's earliest immigrant ancestor would be selected. I tend to agree with Rootsweb that state specific Evans lists would be the best solution. Then one could sign up for any and all states of that individual's interest. My Evans line went from Maryland to Virginia and some of that family?moved to Kentucky but the sibling in my specific line, Augustus Haislip Evans (1792-1863, my gggrandfather), left Virginia and was in St. Louis (Missouri) as early as 1822. So I would subscribe to the Maryland, Virginia, Missouri, and possibly the Kentucky lists. I think you could do one of two things. Either name the list for the earliest Evans ancestor who arrived in the U.S. and then add "and all descendent branches", or just make it state specific as RootsWeb suggested and state very clearly in the list description that your real objective is to include in it, all of the other states from which these Evans' families either came from, ended up, or just passed through. 1. [EVANS] advice needed about creating another more specialized Evans list
    2. R H Bennett [No Chain Emails Please!]
    3. Back on July 4th I made a request of Rootsweb for a new mailing list which would be more specific to our family's particular line than the general mailing list. I figured it would allow us to do more deep and penetrating research without subjecting all non related members to our efforts. I was going to call this list: EVANS-MDPAKYOHINLA@rootsweb.com because that gave an indication of just what we are researching. I was going to invite all members that I know who are doing this research and I was going to make an announcement on this list for those I do not know about. I was also going to make announcements on other Rootsweb lists which concentrated on the surnames of all those allied families who married into our Evanses. Were any significant discoveries to be made from the new list, I would, as list administrator, forward these to the general Evans list; so the two lists would not be disconnected. But, what happened is that I got a message from Rootsweb saying that the proposed list was too specific and they weren't being that specific anymore. [There are so many affiliated surnames that I can't imagine this list being too narrow.] Now what to do? I thought that perhaps changing it to Evans-MDPAKYOH might broaden it a bit and not narrow it to the folks who went on to IN and LA. I have not heard back from them about that, but I am not hopeful. Some have suggested that I go to Google groups and I am considering that, but since Rootsweb totally centers on genealogy and since I have my Degruy list on Rootsweb, I would rather be consistent. Rootsweb said that maybe I'd like to choose a state: Evans-OH... but that leaves out all the MD and PA and KY influences. So, does anyone have any ideas about this? I am befuddled. Renee
