If they are family you would think they would be buried in close proximity to one another. ALL of the graves are in close proximity to one another as this is a VERY VERY small graveyard. As best I can determine there are only a total of 23 stones (but 24 folks are buried there because one of the stones is a double). I can tell you the Potters are all buried right beside one another; but the only other thing I can tell you is that the rest of the graves are at some distance from the Potters. I didn't take all these photos - they were sent to me by a gal who just moved into the new housing development. It's been many years since I was at the site but if memory serves there didn't seem to be any order to the cemetery (graves for the most part didn't appear to be in rows, etc.) they looked like they'd been placed grouped around under trees, etc. While I'm not positive I'd guess that all these EVANS graves are right beside one another - but as I said even if they aren't right beside one another they are still in close proximity simply because the cemetery is so very small. ELI must certainly BE related to John (and judging from birth years) would most likely be a brother. Interesting to note is the fact that John's daughter Mary Catherine was one of the EARLIEST burials in the cemetery; she died on 27 Aug 1863 and there are only 2 other stones which predate this (one for Sabry Williams w/o Thomas Williams who died on 26 Oct 1862 and one for her son N. G. Williams who died Oct 1862) so Mary Catherine Evans was the 3rd person to be buried in the cemetery and her father John was the 4th. I will email the gal who sent the photos to me and ask her if she made notes as to who was buried beside whom, etc. and I'll let you know how these EVANS are situated. Have about a jillion questions for you--I too enjoy having someone to join the hunt (two head are sure better than one!) I am not sure if Eli and John Wesley are related. Like I said before, John Wesley Evans had a brother, but I am not sure what his name is. They lived in Madison County, Tennessee before moving to Senatobia. On the 1830 Census of Madison County, Tennessee there is a John Evans listed who is just 2 names below Frederick Replogle (Frederick Marion Replogle). This John Evans born between 1760-1770, is too old to be John Wesley Evans, the husband of Mary Elizabeth Replogle. But Frederick is the father of Mary Elizabeth. I think this is John Wesley Evans' father. It shows that there are 2 other males in the house born between 1800-1810. One of those would be John Wesley Evans. There is also a female born between 1810-1815 who would be a sister. Then his mother who was born between 1770-1780. So it is very possible that maybe this Eli is John Wesley's brother. I wonder how close their graves are to each other. If they are! family you would think they would be buried in close proximity to one another. I'll look and see what I can find on Eli and Mary Evans. Glad to have someone on the hunt with me! :) Jenny :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. That is definitely my John Wesley Evans and his daughter, Mary C. Evans graves. I'm not sure if Eli and Mary are related in any way. I do know that John Wesley Evans had a brother, but am not sure what his name is. Maybe Eli is his brother and moved to Senatobia before him and could be the reason for moving to Senatobia to begin with. That is something I would love to find out. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the pictures. I want so bad to go there someday myself, but these will surely do for now. They are great pictures too! Thanks again so much! Big hugs! Eli Evans is husband of Mary Evans and that F. M. Evans is Francis "Frank" M. Evans their son. The Mary C. Evans MAY be the daughter of John Wesley Evans and Elizabeth Replogle; the 1850 Southern Division, Desoto, MS Census shows a daughter in their hh named Catherine Evans born c1845; then in 1860 her name is given as M. C. Evans born c1847. Were Eli Evans and John Wesley Evans brothers? Do you know Eli's wife Mary's maiden name? Eli and Mary had another son named William R. Evans born c1838 in TN; what became of him? Odd thing about the 1880 census rec for Mary Evans and her son Francis "Frank" M. Evans - says that he is a widower. I see no evidence of his ever having been married (based on the 1850, 1860, 1870 census records for him). If this 1880 record is not a clerical error on the part of the census taker then Francis "Frank" M. Evans married after 21 Jul 1870 and his wife died before the enumeration date of the next census [15 Jun 1880] and she is NOT buried in the same cemetery w/ him. Take I-55 S Exit #25A towards Jackson, MS. Take the MS-4 Exit #265 toward Senatobia/Holly Springs Turn Left on MS-4. Go 3.9 miles to Carolina Grove Subdivision. The old Caolina Church is long gone. The tombstones are in a grove of oaks to the immediate left once you go through the subdivision gates. There is no fence or anything around the tombstones (but someone cares for the tombstones, periodically cutting grass, raking leaves, placing flowers, etc.) View a photo of the spot at: http://home.att.net/~shanahanfamilygenealogy/carolina_cemetery.jpg My family website: http://home.att.net/~littlehouseantiques/home.html dedicated to my ggGrandfather Michael William Shanahan, an Irish born immigrant who converted from his Catholic faith and was baptised at the Carolina Church 17 May 1868. The gal Michael married (Sallie Margaret Potter) was the daughter of Daniel D. Potter (who was the baptist pastor who founded the church and who is also buried there). The witness/bondsman on Michael and Sallie's marriage license was none other than William J. Hudgens the son-in-law of your John Wesley Evans. John's daughter Martha Elizabeth EVANs married William J. Hudgens on 11 Sep 1867 in DeSoto Co MS. I have the census records for Martha Elizabeth Evans Hudgens from 1870 and onwards if you are interested at all in them. Martha Elizabeth Hudgens nee EVANS lived very close by to Michael and Sallie in 1870 and was still in the area in 1880 but by 1900 she'd moved to Greenville in Clark Co Arkansas with her two sons Samuel Rob Hudgens and William C. Hudgens. Samuel married and had kids but it appears ! that William C. Hudgens may not have ever married/had offspring. AND I was recently contacted by a gal who just bought a house in the new subdivision - she forwarded to me photos of all the tombstones in the cemetery. I've got to look these up but if your John Wesley Evans was buried there I'll have a photo I can share with you. I used Ancestry.com's contact service to email you (and gave my direct email address in that) but if for some reason you don't get that please contact me at LittleHouseAntiques@att.net. Kathy P.S. There is a transcription that has been done (long long ago) of the Cemetery; I don't have the entire thing but I know a gal down in Senatobia who should be able to get it for us (if it should turn out that I can't find those tombstone photos) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am looking for the parents and birth information for Richard Evans who married Joanna Allen Standley Eborns in Beverly, MA in 1764. They had children Priscilla, Joanna, and Ebenezer Giles Evans. Joanna had previous children. Daughters Priscilla and Joanna are found as adults in the Sedgwick area of Hancock County, ME. Ebenezer stayed or returned to Essex County, MA. Joanna, the mother, married William Halley/Hawley in 1780, so I assume Richard died sometime before that. Seems Joanna had bad luck with husbands' dying. She was then Joanna Allen Standley Eborns Evans Hawley. It is possible that Richard died in Maine, as both daughters married there in 1787 and 1790. I have so little information on Richard. All I know is that he is my ancestor and he married in Beverly in 1764. I would appreciate any help finding more info. Claire
