Check for military records. The CCC enlisted almost in mass at the start of WWII. Thought someone on the Evans list might know who this is: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Athens Messenger, Sept. 28, 1930 SKELETON OF OPERA HOUSE IS REMINDER Plays In Those Days Were Different, Pomeroyans Recall. By C. A. Hartley, Messenger Staff Writer Pomeroy, Sept. 27. - The Pomeroy Opera House which stands a three story gaunt and condemned brick building on Second Street, a few doors east of the Courthouse, is a grim reminder of the flight of time, and the effects of the time's gnawing tooth. Forty-one years ago, on the fifth of the coming December, that structure, new, beautiful and complete, was thrown open to the public. Lizzie EVANS and her company, in "Our Angel," dedicated the new playhouse, which was one of the high spots in the history of the town. The admission was $2.60 per ticket for the first night and on the second night the price dropped to $1. The new playhouse was crowded even to the balcony, the play was a beautiful presentation of the sweetness and purity of womanhood, with the closing act revealing to a marked degree the splendor and faithfulness of that virtue which characterized young womanhood of those days. Plays then were quite different from the shows one sees today. The old structure has fallen into decay and is haunted mostly by memories. The hands that erected the building have long since lain aside their tools. George BAUER and his corps of splendid masons, whose mechanical genius erected out of brick, stone and mortar the then splendid structure, and the late George WEHO and C. A. M. ARNOLD and other carpenters did the finishing work. The building was erected by a company, the members of which have all passed on, and a few are left who witnessed the first play in the building with the elfin Lizzie EVANS as the leading lady.

I found some notes copied from a talk with my mother many years ago in which she said her grandfather, Clinton Evans, was the son of a man 'who came to the USA from Ireland and lived to be 112 years old'. I do not have a clue to the mans name, except the fact Clinton named his first born son James Calvin Evans. Clinton Evans was born about 1827 in Kentucky and died 1865 in Cooper County, MO. In early 1849 'Kenton' Evans married Eliza Hill in Barren County, KY - which fits our Clinton who married Eliza J. Hill. The couple then show in the 1850 census in Barren County with their child, James C. Evans born February 1850 in KY. They moved to Cooper County, MO where their second son, William C. Evans was born in 1952. Any connections? Any thoughts as to where I might find evidence regarding this supposed ancestor? I welcome any and all advise. Thanks, Betty

Author: darrelsalisbury Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.evans/9884.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The first Evans I find is a subject of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia in January, 1608. Many more arrived before Peter Evans, my presumed ancestor, arrived in 1650. Peter is presumed to be son of Griffith, although the math of descent is a stretch. Peter's son, Peter, is presumed to have moved into North Carolina by 1706. A Griffith Evans was transported to Virginia by William & Peter Prestly (sic) in 1666. This may be the "Griffin" Evans whose will was proved in Henrico Co., VA, 1 Aug 1681. Peter, son of Griffith, is said to have died, 1706, in Henrico Co., VA. However, a Peter Evans made a will dated 27 Jan 1695/96 in Westmoreland Co., VA, with wife & 2 children with sames names as those who arrived with Peter in 1650. Any way I look at it, I need at least one more generation to get from Griffith Evans to the Peter Evans and his wife, Sarah Wynns, who is mentioned as "wife of Peter Evans" in the will of her father, George, dated 1751.
