I have been trying to find Thomas Evans in Virginia without any luck. A male descendant of Pleasant Evans (son of Thomas) has submitted his DNA to the Family Tree DNA Project. A group of us went in together to pay for the test. We are in the process of upgrading from a 12 to 37 marker test. To see the DNA results, visit the following website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~evansdna/EVANS Surname DNA Project.htm Go to the bottom of the page and click on EVANS DNA Test Results. Thomas Evans of Adair Co., KY's descendant is Kit Number 98613. I have been suspicious that our Thomas Evans was born in Wales or was a first generation Virginian. He does not match any of the main Evans families in Virginia. The DNA for two others in the project were too many generations to find a match. The 12 marker DNA test through Family Tree DNA is $99 plus $2 shipping and handling. The prices go up with the 25, 37, and 67 marker tests. The 12 marker test is a good one to start with. Occasionally, Family Tree will run specials on upgrades. They are running a special now for June and this is the reason we decided to upgrade. I encourage anyone stuck on their Evans family to participate in this project. Even if you do not match to anyone on the list, you can at least eliminate several Evans families like I did. Since most Evans families appear to be from Wales, it is very difficult to do research. The naming pattern that Wales used can be confusing. Evans derived from the Welsh patronymics of the father's given name. My Thomas Evans could actually have been the son of Evan (first name). Evans meaning the "son of Evan." I have read that some families carried on this tradition up to the early 1800s. Please let me know if you have any additional information on Thomas Evans and his family. I would be interested in know why you think that Thomas was the immigrant for our family. I am also interested in finding out where Lavinia comes in as Thomas's wife. What information I do have is on Thomas from Green and Adair counties, Kentucky. I have not made the connection with Virginia yet. Your input is very welcomed! It's a bit like finding a needle in a haystack trying to find and Alfred Evans in Wales!!! All i know is that Alfred Evans my great grandfather was born in 1889 in Cardiff and as far as i can tell from the marriage certificates i have etc his father was william and was born Glamorgan 1834. Other than that i have no info. I have a wife who is possibly Mary Potter but i can't confirm this yet. I have the following children for them but again not confirmed:Children ELIZABETH EVANS 1868- WILLIAM HENRY EVANS 1869- ALFRED JOHN EVANS 1889- My great grandfather was raised in Wales but moved to Warwickshire where my grandma, father and myself were all born so i'm afraid the Welsh connection ends there and i'm not too sure about teh geography of Wales. The only thing i am sure of is that none of my relatives down my direct lines ever moved abroad as we have all stayed pretty much in the same areas where the families were from generations back. I think there are some gaps in the records ancestry carry as i ahve ahd the problem of entire families disappearing between census' even thoguh i nkow they never died and ancestry told me that htye diodn't have absolutelt everything on there yet.
