EVANS) for Benjamin EVANS and Mary (Polly) WINFREY. I had already found Martha Louise EVANS based on her marriage record where she was identified as the daughter of Polly EVANS. However, based on the 1830 and 1840 censuses it appears that Benjamin EVANS and Mary WINFREY had a fourth daughter. There was a Mary B. EVANS who married Elisha E. JONES, son of Levi JONES and Julia Anne WINFREY. We know of this marriage based on the following Adair County marriage record: "JONES, Elisha E. to EVANS, Mary B., 9 Aug 1841." Then in the family bible of Philip WINFREY, Jr., brother of the above Mary (Polly) WINFREY, the following record is found: "Mary B. Jones Departed This life July the 12th 1842 Age 22 years 1 month & 26 days" The above results in a calculated birth date for this Mary B. JONES of 17 May 1820, which coincides with the birth date range of the second daughter of Benjamin EVANS and Mary WINFREY in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. Thus it has been concluded that the Mary B. EVANS that married Elisha JONES was the daughter of Benjamin EVANS and Mary WINFREY. Does anyone have any additional information that might support or refute this conclusion? Also Rose, would you mind sharing how you connected the above Sarah Rebecca EVANS and Elizabeth P. EVANS as daughters of Benjamin EVANS and Mary WINFREY? You also asked "I would be interested in know why you think that Thomas was the immigrant for our family. I am also interested in finding out where Lavinia comes in as Thomas's wife." Unfortunately I have done no personal research on Thomas EVANS and that information came from the family tree on RootsWeb of Barbara CALKIN located at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2890741&id=I672. Again thanks for sharing, Frank Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Browsing the net, I found some interesting information on Moses Evans of Butler township, Fidelity, Ohio. Hope it helps someone. Renee in St. Louis Found the following at: http://www.daytonhistorybooks.citymax.com/page/page/1761450.htm MOSES EVANS, [pages 1298-1300] one of the most substantial farmers of Butler township, whose post-office is Fidelity, Ohio, springs from Welsh ancestry. His grandfather, Joseph Evans, was a farmer of Georgia, and in 1773 married in that state Miss Esther Buffington. Their children were Samuel, born January 27, 1775; Hannah, born October 27, 1776; Isaac, born November 7, 1778; Moses, born September 24, 1780; Margaret, born October 17, 1782; Adam, born December 30, 1784; John, born February 16, 1787; Robert, born February 7, 1879; Phebe, born December 13, 1790; Mary, born December 8, 1792; Aaron, born January 13, 1794, and Sally, born May 31, 1797. Joseph Evans, father of these children, moved to Ohio in 1802 by means of wagons. The Evans family were Quakers, and moved way from Georgia on account of their opposition to slavery. They settled in Butler township, Montgomery county, near Vandalia. Here Mr. Evans passed his remaining days, dying August 31, 1828, when seventy-nine years and eleven days old. Esther Buffington, his wife, was born February 1, 1756, and died May 30, 1830. Mr. Evans was one of the sturdy, thrifty pioneers, and owned land enough to give each of his children a good farm. Robert Evans, his son, and the father of Moses Evans, was born in Georgia, and according to his own statement was a small boy when the family moved to Ohio. Robert Evans received a fair common-school education in his youth, and became a farmer. July 12, 1812, he married Esther Jenkins, of Ohio, daughter of Thomas Jenkins. Mr. Evans after his marriage settled in Miami county on 170 acres of land, which he cleared from the woods. The town of Tippecanoe, Ohio, now stands on this farm. Mr. Evans became a prosperous man, and bought additional land for his children. This land lay in St. Joseph's county, Ind. Politically he was an old-line whig and later a republican, and a strong Union man. Four of his sons were in the Union army, Jesse, Robert, Moses and Eli. The first three were in company G, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Ohio volunteer infantry, and served 100 days, and Eli served in an Indiana regiment. Mr. Evans was a Quaker in religious belief, like his ancestors before him. His children by his first wife were Thomas, Joseph, William, Moses, Morris, Eli and Esther, all of whom grew to mature years, and all married and reared families. There were several other children who died young. The mother of these children died January 26, 1835, and Mr. Evans again married, his second wife being Mary Jenkins, by whom he had the following children: Jesse, Mary L., Robert, Elizabeth and one that died young. Moses Evans was born January 17, 1826, on his father's farm in Monroe township, Miami county, Ohio. His early education was only a limited one, but sufficient for all the practical purposes of a farmer's life. When about twenty-one years old he married, on February 25, 1847, Elizabeth Pearson, who was a daughter of Noah and Florentine Pearson. Noah Pearson was an excellent man and a good farmer of Miami county. His children were Simeon, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Henrietta. Mr. Pearson was also a Quaker in religion and lived to the age of seventy years. After their marriage Moses Evans and wife settled in Monroe township, within four miles of Tippecanoe, on his father's farm, of which his father gave him eighty acres. In 1865 he sold it and moved to his present farm of eighty acres, which he has much improved. His wife died October 13, 1856, a woman of excellent character and many virtues. December 31, 1857, Mr. Evans married Ruth Russell, who died April 24, 1859, leaving no children. On May 3, 1865, Mr. Evans married Delilah Fanner, a widow, whose maiden mane was Yount. She was born in Montgomery county, July 21, 1833, and was a daughter of Solomon and Eve (Fouts) Yount. Solomon Yount was a son of John and Mary Yount, the former of whom was a pioneer of Montgomery county and of German descent. He came with his family from North Carolina with the old Friends or Quakers, and settled in Butler township. His children were Frederick, Henry, Rebecca, Delilah and Solomon. Solomon Yount was born July 22, 1797, in North Carolina, and came with his parents to Ohio in 1802. He married Eve Yount, a widow, nee Fouts, who was a daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Sinks) Fouts. Solomon Yount settled on the land where now lives Isaac Macy, which land he cleared and then removed to another farm in Butler township, this latter farm containing 170 acres, and upon which he became a substantial farmer. His children by Eve Yount were Enos, Frederick, Mary, Roanna, Elizabeth and Delilah. He had previously been married to Joanna Insco, and by her had one child, Insco Yount. In religion Mr. Yount was a Quaker or Friend, and in politics was first a whig and then a republican. He died April 10, 1870, a man of most excellent character and of strict integrity. Mr. Evans is a member of the Christian church, as also his wife. He served in the one hundred days' service as a member of company E. One Hundred and Forty-seventh Ohio volunteer infantry, and was stationed at Fort Marcy, W. Va. Mr. Evans is an honored citizen, and has held the offices of supervisor and member of school board. By his first wife, he had four children who are now living: Hester M.; Nancy J.; Noah D. and Harriet. Mrs. Evans was married first to Allen Fanner, a farmer of Miami county, and by him had three children, Webster, Callie and Arnold, Allen Fanner died at the age of twenty-seven years.

Yesterday morning Ms. Clement A Evans died at the residence on Greene Street, surrounded by her family, and with the full hope of a bright and blessed beyond. Her death was no surprise to her ______ has been ready to ______(large portion faded too much to read). Mrs. Evans was known and loved by our people. It needed not the pathos of suffering or the calm resignation of the invalid's latter days to endear her to many here. She was loved in Augusta as she was loved everywhere in Georgia, and in many places in the South, because she was an estimable, heroic Christian lady, gentle among the responsibilities of the household and courageous in all her relations in the world. As the wife of a brave and gallant Confederate officer, she accompanied the soldier in many of his movements, sharing the hardships of the life, and as consort to the active and popular Methodist minister, she accompanied him in his charges and was everywhere ! the devoted, inspiring and noble woman. Mrs. Evans was a Miss Walton of Stewart County, GA, having been married about thirty years ago, at the age of fifteen, to General Clement A. Evans. She lived to be the mother of eight children, five of whom survived, among them Mrs. Wm. F. Eve, and Mr. Lawton B. Evans, residents and well known in this community. Last year General Evans was induced by the ill health of his wife to withdraw from the North Georgia Conference and move to Augusta. The deepest sympathies of the entire people go out to General Evans and to the other members of the family of this affliction." October 18, 1884: The friends of Rev. and Mrs. Clement A. The next morning the home of Judge William F. Eve was in ashes. The loss was estimated at about $20,000. Judge Eve was stunned. Not only had he lost one of the first homes built on Monte Sano, but also a priceless library, nearly 5,000 volumes of historical maternal which belong to his father and father-in-law, Gen. C.A. For 12 years Mr. Paul Evans has been a resident of the City of Mexico, and he finds many changes in Augusta since he left here in 1889. Before he left here he was in the employ of the Thompson-Houston Electric Light Company, at its plant on the canal, and in 1889 went to Atlanta for the same company. From there he was sent to Yucatan and remained a year, and from there was transferred to the City of Mexico where he is now chief engineer of the Mexican General Electric Co., this being the agency in Mexico for the General Electric Co of new York, which was formed by the combination of the Thompson-Houston and the Edison interests. Mr. Evans is off on a three month's leave of absence; spent time with his father Ge! n. Clement A. Evans in Atlanta; and is now with is sister Mrs. W. F. Eve at Monte Sano. He says that Broad Street has been completely metamorphosed since he left here (etc). Charles Crawford EVANS (died young). 8 M vii. Clement Walton EVANS was born calculated 1872. He died 14 Jul 1916 in Guadalajara, Mexico and was buried in Guadalajara, Mexico. August 22, 1916: CLEMENT W. EVANS BURIED IN MEXICO. Mr. Clement W. Evans, the news of whose death in Guadalajara, Mexico, on July 14th has been received in Augusta, was the youngest son of the late General Clement A. Evans and wife, Allie Walton Evans. He was a brother of Mrs. W.F. Eve and Supt. Lawton B. Evans of Augusta, and Mrs. Robert Stephens of Atlanta, and Mr. Paul H. Evans of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Mrs. George Lippincott of Philadelphia. He left Augusta about twenty-two years ago to accompany his brother, Mr. Paul H. Evans, in the mining and electrical business in Mexico. He had been there continuously ever since, living in various cities in Mexico, and engaged largely in lighting mines in the silver regions. He was 44 years of age at the time of his death, and was unmarried. Mr. Evans death was caused by prolonged attacks of intestinal inflammation, from which it seemed impossible to get relief. His own sickness, lasting five months, and the illness of ! his brother's wife, prevented his leaving Mexico at the time all American departed from that republic, so that at the time of his death there were only five Americans in Guadalajara. His brother, Mr. Paul H. Evans, was with him at the time of his death. The remains were interred there in July 14th. those who remember Mr. Evans in his young manhood, will recall the splendid ability he brought to his profession of electrical engineering, his lovable nature and engaging manner. He was beloved by a large number of friends here and in Mexico had identified himself with the American colony in Mexican city, by all of whom he was highly regarded. August 27, 1916: There is another article where the writer says he saw the letter Paul wrote his brother Lawton at the time of Clement's death. I will only repeat part of it: There were but five Americans in the city. Other than his kinsmen, Mr. Paul Evans knew no one of them. The Mexicans were not friendly to the Americans. The Evanses were among strangers. The Sisters of Mercy came to them, and they attached by the bedside of his brother, nursed him with attention and devotion, and prayed for him until he died. 9 F viii. Martha Lucy EVANS "Lucy"1 was born 1879. She died 1962 (need to verify). On October 22, 1907, Doctor Stephens was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Evans. Mrs. Stephens is a daughter of the late Gen. Clement A. Evans, one of Georgia's most distinguished sons. Doctor and Mrs. Stephens have three children : Allie Walton, Emma Simpson and Robert Grier, Jr. As a broad-minded, conscientious citizen, Doctor Stephens keeps well informed concerning all that affects Atlanta's future and in voting for public officials he is careful as to their efficiency. Like his father before him, he is a democrat. He holds membership in the patriotic order of Sons of Veterans, and with his family belongs to the Presbyterian Church. [A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians By Lucian Lamar Knight] >From Dr. Lawton B. Evans obituary April 4, 1934: "Dr. Evans is survived by his son, Clement A. My first reply didn't go through, it seems, since I got a system reply saying it didn't, so I'll try again. Just as well, I've included some additional information here: The William R. Evans who died in Macon, Georgia is indeed the son of Charles Thomas Pope Evans and Judith Bassett. A quick look at the publicly accessible Death Certificates in Georgia shows this from his death certificate: Death Certificate of William R. Evans: Died in Macon, Bibb Co., GA, in Macon on April 22, 1926. He had lived in Macon for 40 years at time of death. His address at death was 324 Jenkins St. in Macon. His widow was Ella Brown Evans, his date of birth was 06/23/1856, age at death was 69. His occupation had been "with Southern Ry." He was born in Georgia, and his father's name was C.T.P. Evans, also born in Georgia. His mother's name was Judith Bassett, born in Georgia. The informant on the death certificate was Mrs. W. R. Evans at 324 Jenkins St., Macon, GA (his newly widowed wife). Cause of death: Influenza, Bronchiopneumonia, with chronic nephritis as contributory factor. He was to be buried at Riverside Cemetery in Macon. Here's a link to his death certificate: http://content.sos.state.ga.us/u?/gadeaths,278234 Looking in my own records (Charles Thomas Pope Evans was my 2nd cousin 5x removed), I find no mentions in any family branch of a Rawsey Porter. My branch of the family veers from yours at Arden Evans' children. While the branch of Charles Thomas Pope Evans is the branch of Arden's son Thomas, my branch continues with one of Arden's other sons, Arden, Jr. And the fuller version of the names of William R. Evans and Ella Brown Evans' children were: William T., b. Aug 1880 John D., b. Jan 1881 Henry Joseph, b. Apr 1885 John B., b. Feb 1888 Myrtle L., b. Aug 1889 Charles R., b. Aug 1892 Wyatt C., b. Sept 1896 (in addition, there were 2 other children born to them, but they died in infancy, and I don't have their names/DOB's since I haven't researched that branch that far) This William R. Evans stayed in Georgia all his life, from birth to death, and he had only the one wife, Ella Carolyn Brown. Hope this helps, D. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:46 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [EVANS] William R. Just a correction on the email I just sent in reply. William R. Evans' year of birth was 1856, not 1886 as I typed. Sorry about that, I just noticed my typo on that. Just found this and am sharing: 825 W. Berry St. (George P. Evans House) Built c.1895, this brick Queen Anne house was first owned by George P. Evans. Behind the house stands a two-story brick carriage house which actually functions to house a carriage today. George was born in Hillsboro, Ohio on June 15, 1852, and came to Fort Wayne shortly before the Civil War. He was associated with his father, Amos Evans, in the firm of Evans & Company which sold wholesale dry goods and notions. He later formed the Evans Brothers Company, with brother John P. Evans and half-brother Oliver Evans, which manufactured overalls, hunting coats and other articles. He and his brothers were also associated with the Hoosier Manufacturing Company in Fort Wayne which manufactured such things as overalls, shirts and pants. By approximately 1905, the company was considered to be among one of the most influential industries of the city. George was a thirty-second degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. His father, Amos, was married to the niece of Asa Fairfield. George was still residing at 825 W. Berry St. when he died on August 5, 1925.
