I also have Lumbee ancestry from my Evans side of the family- Shoemake and Chavers I think. I know that at one time I had ancestors living in South Carolina around the Pee Dee River, but I don't know about North Carolina. The family eventually settled around the AL/TN border. I'll have to take a closer look and refresh my memory about the Chavers' and Evans'. It gets pretty confusing with the lines crossing and the same names being repeated. My email is [email protected] if you want to take this discussion off the board. Thanks, Tammy Evans Hutcheson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I did a search on Henry Evans at FamilySearch.org and found one born about 1767 in North Carolina. His parents are listed as: Lawrence and Sarah Evans. My family is also Native American, but I think they are Lumbee Indians from Bladen county,NC and Dillon, South Carolina. We have lots of Chavis and Evans in my family; and here in Raleigh, NC they usually always lived in close proximty to each other. My Anderson Chavis was married to Bertha Evans. Sometimes she is also listed as Tabitha, Bitha and Tobitha Evans. They are the parents of York Chavis (my mother-in-law's grandfather) who was born between 1860 and 1869. Do you have Evans, Chavis or Chavers who lived in North Carolina? My Evans and Chavis ancestors originated in Granville County,NC and were usually listed as "Free Blacks" or Mulattos. Sorry I can't be of much help right now, but let's keep in touch. I'm sure our family lines will cross if we continue to search.
