(snip) **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Normally, you can't use a text reader to read an email that is in your email reader; however, when McAfee "saves" the infected email and "moves" it to the "Infected" directory, it puts it in "text" format. Then, you can read it just as you would any other text file. In Eudora, I can click on an email in the list of incoming, select "Save As" and save it as a .txt file. As a matter of fact, that's the way I clean out my email in Eudora from time to time, to keep active email at a minimum. I normally choose all the email in a Mailbox that concerns the same subject, say "KAK Worm", and save ALL them in a single .txt file, giving it an identifying name and date so I can open it later and find something I need to find. I would save the email from this List concerning KAK to a file "KAK Worm-051700.txt". It tells me the subject and the date. SgtGeorge
I was just "fortunate" enough to receive an email that contained the "HAPPY99" virus. So, I can show you what we were discussing about "viewing" an email that contains a "virus attachment". A user sent me an email, requesting to be added to a notification list that I maintain. McAfee notified me that the email contained the "HAPPY99" virus. I chose to "move" the email AND the attached file to my C:\Infected directory. These were the two files that were added to that directory: 1) Temp.In 2) Happy99.exe Of course, I'm not ABOUT to touch the "Happy99.exe" file; I just deleted it. I used NotePad to open the "Temp. In" file. Here's what it shows: *************** Return-Path: <[email protected]> Received: from mail.alltel.net (mail.alltel.net [166.102.165.30]) by buckpalace.concentric.net (8.9.1a/(99/07/15 5.25)) id SAA05625; Sat, 29 Apr 2000 18:22:15 -0400 (EDT) [1-800-745-2747 The Concentric Network] Errors-To: <[email protected]> Received: from oemcomputer ([162.39.130.102]) by mail.alltel.net (8.9.3/ALLTEL Messaging Service) with SMTP id RAA13980 for <[email protected]>; Sat, 29 Apr 2000 17:22:12 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <[email protected]> X-UIDL: 957057513.000 From: "Carel Osborne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Notify-Me Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2000 17:31:58 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_001F_01BFB200.D24EFFC0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Status: RO This is a multi-part message in MIME format. (This part was deleted because it contained the actual code for the virus. Yes, the virus came as an attachment, but was also contained in the "behind-the-scene" body text.) *************** In this case, I could easily discern whose system was infected, because the "HAPPY99" virus doesn't "fake" the From: address. The sender was: [email protected] I sent a reply to let him/her know that his/her system was now infected. In this case, I didn't even need to look at the Received: headers. Please note the email program used by the sender: MS Outlook Express!!!!! (People, get wise! Spend a little money and start using Eudora. Also, stop using MS Internet Explorer and download the FREE Netscape!) Hope this helps, SgtGeorge At 09:41 PM 05/17/2000, George W. I am beginning to detect differences which were nicer in the old LIGHT Version: In my beloved old Light version 1. Signatures - could have more than just one 2. Search worked inside an e-mail as well as in the mail boxes. 3. I did not have to battle with html format. The others lists to which I write keep begging ASCII mail only - how do I switch html off in PRO? The only real improvement that was important to me is the spell checker. Do I revert to Light 3.0.6 - I will have some sleepless nights, I think. David Lewin Lonodn ------- **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** David, let's take them one at a time: 1) You can have as many "signatures" as you wish! If you have the hard drive space, you could even have 10,000! 2) The most recent version of Eudora (4.3) allows you to search both WITHIN a single email, or to search ALL email in ALL of your mailboxes. a) To search WITHIN an email, CTRL-SHIFT-F b) To search ALL your emails, CTRL-F (This is covered in the Eudora Help file.) 3) Go to TOOLS, OPTIONS, STYLED TEXT; you have the following options: a) Send both plain and styled b) Send styled text only c) Send plain text only d) Ask me each time If you NEVER need to send in HTML, just choose "Send plain text only" and do NOT check "Ask me each time". You should never have any sleepless nights over Eudora 4.3!!!!! And, as to the only important improvement being the Spell Checker..... I don't think I could tell you all the important improvements in 4.3 without a resulting email that is way, way over the 15,000 byte limit for these Lists. Just let me say that the differences between Light 3.0.6 and Pro 4.3 are so many that it's like comparing the "Spirit of St. Louis" to the "Space Shuttle". What you need to do is read the following files: EUDORA.HLP MANUAL.PDF WHATSNEW.PDF There is so much information in these 3 files, you will need several hours to digest it all. I should note that in order to read the .PDF files, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a FREE program, and can be downloaded from: http://www.adobe.com or http://www.eudora.com/download/other You CAN use the .HLP file by clicking on HELP, at the top of your screen, selecting "Topics", then choosing "What's New in Eudora 4.3". Hope this helps, SgtGeorge (P.S. If you need some tips on making more than one Signature, let me know.)
