I received the below email and thought you might be interested in it. Barry is a dependable researcher, and if he says this service is OK, then it IS. I'm going to check into it myself. SgtGeorge *********************************************************** Hi ALL! I've been using this EFax receive feature (unbelievably FREE) for more than a year now, and can't say enough about it. I have absolutely NO stake in this program, but, if you have an email account with anyone, you can have a 100% FREE fax telephone # to receive faxes, from a telephone # that is YOURS and ONLY yours. I believe it costs a few cents/page if you receive a fax, altho that may be pd by the sender. And the faxes are much clearer (and faster I believe, depending on your modem speed) than from a regular fax machine, which also allows much better results if you wish to OCR the faxed pages. Now, if you wish to go to the next step, if you wish to be able to fax FROM your computer, it will cost you about $3/mo (I have it auto deducted from a credit card account) for EFax Plus, plus about $.05 (5 cents) per page that you send, which will also entitle you to a local Fax telephone number (see my signature block below), ALL for the previously mentioned total of about $3/mo plus 5 cents per page sent. Many people use this service, and I've had very few problems, and the service has upgraded services consistently (also Free). I've used the service about 50 times, and have always been successful. It has been VERY convenient for me, and 10-12 times, has saved me significant effort to get a document to someone else. My $1500 HP fax machine sits idle now. Also, if you have only a single phone line, the incoming fax will get through even if you are using your only phone line, as it will pop up on the email list. Same with an outgoing fax. Further, if you 'fax' a document to someone else (for example, perhaps a birth certificate, or passport applic, that you scanned (another story - USB scanners are avail for <$100 these days) ), they will get a much better looking document online (again, better OCR possibilities), even if they have no fax machine, because an acrobat type autodecoder opener accompanies the 'fax.' If you are interested, go to: http://www.efax.com/ and review the services. I believe this EFax service is of particular interest for genealogists who want to send documents to others, especially documents that will be OCRd to extract important information, and even more especially for documents in a foreign language that will be translated by one of the many online translation services (PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME ABOUT THESE TRANSLATION SERVICES BECAUSE WHILE THEY CAN BE VERY HELPFUL, THEY ARE JUST BECOMING USER FRIENDLY). And the cost for transfer from foreign countries is very little more costly than for that of in-country transfer (I do not know whether EFax is yet into free services in other countries). If anyone has a significant problem with this EFax service, please let me know, because I'm avid in my appreciation for this service.
