    1. [EUDORA] More Aureate News - 2nd Thoughts About Removing Aureate from System
    2. VIRUS-DISCUSSION and EUDORA-MAIL Listowner
    3. Folks, I may have to do some back pedaling on the subject. Some users who installed OptOut have programs or utilities that no longer work properly. I've run into this now myself. Specifically, when I download email that contains HTML advertisements, the graphics files will no longer download in Eudora!!!!! I began to suspect problems when I installed a new Beta for GetRight last night. Here's the message I received during the installation: *************** Removing the Advertising Files used by GetRight: GetRight shows advertising banners to people who have not yet paid for GetRight. After buying, you do not need to see the advertisements if you do not want to, so the advertising system files may be removed from your computer. Warning: These advertising files are shared with a large number of other programs. (List of programs - see other email for the list.) While GetRight will work fine with these files removed, some other programs using this advertising system may give errors or not work if these files are removed. If you remove these advertising files and other programs do not work, you will need to re-install that other program to restore the advertising files that it requires. To remove all the Aureate/Radiate advertising files, just download and run this program (there was a clickable URL here). *************** Now, it appears that Eudora was one of the programs that also installed Aureate files, or at least needed some of the files in order to download the ad graphics that came in the HTML emails. I have not decided yet what to do about it. I'm getting ready to go to he OptOut website and ask the producer of the software about this problem, and a couple of other things. I need to know the following: 1) If I have ZoneAlarm installed, will that prevent data from being sent from my system back to Aureate? I suspect it won't, since ZoneAlarm blocks "pulls" from the system, where Aureate sends "pushes". 2) Is there any way to block Aureate from sending "pushes" from certain programs, while leaving others free to do so? 3) In light of the statement by Steve Gibson, I need to go to his web site and chat with him about Aureate. Then, I need to ask him, IF he has determined that his first assessment was truly in error, if there is any way to reinstall Aureate on my system, short of reinstalling every danged program that uses Aureate. I will keep you informed about what I learn. It's really no big thing, since the ONLY HTML graphics I really care about come with a daily notification of new animated GIF files. I always save them for possible future use. I can really live without them, but just wonder if any more glitches will show up as I use programs I haven't opened since removing Aureate from my system. Later, SgtGeorge Listowner
