I'm replying, quoting ALL of Sandy's post, and my replies, in case anyone didn't see the originals. This is of critical importance! If you don't save any other posts from the EUDORA-Mail Mailing List, save this one. BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP! Now, if you have to restore EUDORA.INI from a very old backup, wherein your "Personalities" are not recorded, you can open ANY EUDORA.INI that contains them and "copy" and "paste" to get them back without having to format them all over again. (Make sure you have exited Eudora before attempting this.) 1) Make a manual backup of EUDORA.INI (so that if you screw up, you will still have the original file to work with). The easiest way is to "copy" it to another file, such as EUDORA-INI.BAK. Unfortunately, you can't do this using Windows Explorer. (Ugh! Why can't MS allow us to do this in Windows without having to resort to DOS!?) Got to a DOS prompt; navigate to C:\Eudora; type: COPY EUDORA.INI EUDORA-INI.BAK 2) Open the old "saved" backup of the EUDORA.INI file (using a Windows utility, such as Note Pad) and look for the heading [Personalities] and any headings [Persona-.....] 3) Highlight and copy everything under [Personalities] and all the [Persona-.....] categories. 4) Open the current EUDORA.INI file, delete any [Personalities] and/or [Persona-.....] entries and "paste" in what you copied from the saved file. 5) Doing the above sure beats re-entering all your Personalities in Eudora. Especially if you have many (10-15) like I do. Users may post questions on this subject back here to the List. We're always happy to help with Eudora problems. That's why we run the List! Also, don't be afraid to post questions here on ANYTHING that has to do with Windows! This IS the EUDORA-MAIL Mailing List, but if we can help with anything to do with Windows, let us have it. I'm not criticizing you. But, 800 emails in the IN mailbox are just too many. Why keep that many there anyway? No offense taken - I had been meaning to go through them and clean it out. This just forced me into it. <g> I do use filters, but get tons of mail, and sometimes they just don't filter right. Try this: In TOOLS/OPTIONS/CATEGORY-Display, make sure that "Show Large Buttons" is NOT checked. I think that will solve the problem with the Tool Bar. Unfortunately, there IS still a glitch on some systems with viewing the Tool Bar icons in the Large size. I changed that, and am now able to customize the toolbar. Whew!! I'm about to recommend something that may make you shudder, but which may also be necessary to "fix" your problems. <snip> That way is to DELETE the EUDORA.INI file in your Eudora directory! Yes, you will lose ALL your settings, but, when it comes down to being able to use Eudora, re-doing everything is preferable to having it crash continuously. If you delete the .INI file, the next time you start Eudora, it will be like the first time you ever installed and used the program. You will have to set EVERYTHING all over again. That includes your Personalities and all other settings. You're right, I did shudder! But I did it anyway. And so far, so good! <knock on wood> Eudora *seems* to be working ok right now. The beauty of having MANY backups is that if you restore the most recent, and it still gives you problems, you can go to the next most recent and try it. I had restored the old INI file right before I upgraded, and it worked ok then, but wasn't working right after the upgrade. And, these "other" problems are almost always caused by having too many emails in a Mailbox that is opened at startup. Here is a recommendation from a post on the Eudora Newsgroup: "You should try to keep the main IN and OUT mailboxes as small as reasonably practical, since these files are ALWAYS loaded into memory each time Eudora is started, and that eats up memory/resources. As a rule of thumb, you should transfer each message out of the IN box after you've initially read it. Where you transfer it to would likely depend on whether you need to take further action on it (say, "PENDING") or it can be permanently archived (say, "IN-MAR", this month)." I did exactly that, saving the messages that I needed to. The rest got moved out, and will be sorted through month by month. I'm down well below 100 messages in both the in and out boxes. Keep trying, and, please, keep us informed. We all learn from the problems of any user. Regards, SgtGeorge So far today, things seem to be ok. I haven't tried adding my additional personalities back yet, but will later. Other non-computer things have infringed upon my time today (how dare they??? <g>). Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your help! I'd either still be floundering or back to the old version now without it.
