A few things as I go through the list: 1. Any thing unchecked will not run on next startup. 2. If you find you needed the item, run msconfig again, and check the item again, and restart. 3. Even though I have used McAfee a lot in the past few years, in some cases it will fight W98 itself, if you do not have the absolute latest versions. >I have 23 items in the startup tab: >Taskbar Display Controls >Scan Registry >Task Monitor >System Tray >Load Power Profile (in there twice) Uncheck one, do not need twice. If the profiles are just a bit different, can fight. Unless you need the Power management, turn it off. >VsecomrEXE (Plus virusscan) >vshwin32EXE (McAfee Virus Scan) (in there twice) >avconsoleEXE (McAfee Virus Scan) >VsStatEXE (McAfee Virus Scan) >McAfeeWebScanX (McAfee Virus Scan) I am not totally up to date on all the McAfee stuff at present, but would try unchecking all of them then run Eudora, and see if it makes a difference. Seems to be a lot of scanning going on. If it does not affect Eudora, you can recheck and they will run again. With this many, they may fight. Most definitely will use a ton of resources. The stacks called resources are not too big to start with. >Norton Navigator Uses resources with very little return to you unless you have something that needs it. >TimeSink Ad Client (what is this???) Not too sure, but have you gone to Gibson's site. www.grc.com, and gotten optout yet. This looks like some program to call up adds. Maybe part of the add supported version of Eudora, and has just been left in. >DSS (Windows\BBStore\DSS\DSSAgent.exe - what is this?) Looks like some form of reporting program, to you or others I am not sure. looks like it is in C:\windows\bbstore folder, see if you have same, and look over the file dssagent.exe. >Scheduling agent Unless you really need the scheduling agent to run defrag or some other utility at off times, takes resources for no gain. You have to remember to do the items on the list instead of letting the agent do them for you. >*ICQ Net Detect Agent >ICQ Plus ICQ is always a resource hog. You can run system info. and see how much memory it is tieing up. I keep forgetting about system info. it can tell you what programs are using the resources. >*Office Startup Uses lots of resources. Also see if you are running fast find. If so kill it. the drag on the computer for the very small gain in time is not worth it. Can cause defrag to never get to finish, as it keeps changing the contents of the "C" drive, confusing defrag. >*AOL IM Running AOLIM and ICQ both at the same time can cause conflicts if you do not spend a lot of time working out the conflicts. >*MS Office Shortcut Bar >*MS Outlook >*Resource Meter This is nice to see the level of usage, but also used the resources you are short on. >(*these are the only 6 items in my startup folder) If one of these is fast find, get rid of it. >I'm running Windows 98 on a Pentium 200. Should have power to burn as long as you are not doing very big database file work or heavy game playing. More machine than any of the Dentist I work with have except one, and she only has faster due to heavy use of graphic files. >How can I know what I can safely uncheck and what needs to be there? Any of these in the startup tab can be unchecked, for test. You can recheck if necessary. Do you have Norton's Utilities? If so run Norton WinDoctor frequently. Also if you have RegClean by microsoft, run it about every third time you run WinDoctor. They so similar things, but may find different type problems in the Registry. If you do not have WinDoctor but have McAfee Office, it has a similar program. The first time ran, can find a ton of small problems. Have it try to do an automatic repair on all found the first time. Write me directly for more help, I will try to put in a few minutes now and they. Jack
