    1. [EUDORA] Frustration!
    2. Sandy
    3. I just upgraded my Eudora 4.2.2 to Eudora 4.3.1. I'm already thinking about going back!! The actual upgrade went fine. However, nothing else has since then! It's taking well over 2 minutes to come up. And during the process, I get "Ninety percent of your resources are in use" error *4* times!! That happens even right after I reboot, and start out with 75%!!! I can't customize the toolbar - every time I do and close the customize window, I get an "illegal" error, and the program shuts down. One of the mailboxes had a corrupt TOC - then when I said to fix it, it said everything was fine, and created 0 new entries. :-\ I did have a 4.x version installed prior to the upgrade, so when I upgraded, I got the Reg code. The installation said it was Paid mode, and gave me a Reg code. First time I brought Eudora up, it said it was coming up in Sponsored mode. But then, it gave me a window with my name and Reg code it, and I clicked "ok", and the add area disappeared. Wonderful! However, the next time I brought it up (after it crashed during the toolbar customization), it came up again! I had to click ok again. Went in to "Help" - "Payment & Registration" - "Change your registration" just like it said to, and entered my name and Reg code. Clicked "ok", and nothing happened! It wouldn't "register" the reg code in my software. This has happened every time I've had to restart Eudora (working on number 7 now - I only upgraded an hour ago!). Right now, I have my normal background stuff going, plus the online connection. When that was all that was running, I had 72% resources. Started Eudora (and nothing else), and am currently sitting at 26%! That's bizarre - even for Eudora! I am totally frustrated with this version. I heard it was supposed to be more stable than 4.2.2, but it's not that way here! I'm ready to go back to the old one - at least it worked. :-( What could possibly be wrong, and what can I do to fix all the problems??? Sandy Walroth [email protected]

    3. Sandy, I don't think that Version 4.3.1 is causing the problem directly. I believe that during, or shortly after, the installation, a file was corrupted, possibly EUDORA.INI. Do you regularly backup your important system files? If so, did you back up Eudora before installing 4.3.1? If you did, you can rename the EUDORA.INI file now residing in the Eudora directory to something like EUDORA-INI.BAK, and copy the old EUDORA.INI from the backup to the Eudora directory. Computer users have these corrupted files all the time when using Windows, especially with non-Microsoft applications. The secret is to ALWAYS backup all critical files. This includes data files, .ini files, your .toc and .mbx files from Eudora, and lots of others. Also, approximately how many emails are sitting in your IN mailbox in Eudora? How many mailboxes did you leave open the last time you closed Eudora before the new installation? The reason I ask, is that ANY mailbox that is left open when you close Eudora will be reopened when you start the next time. And, this takes up System Resources. If you left several mailboxes open, and each contained hundreds of emails, that drains a LOT of Resources. A hint here: When you close Eudora, close the mailboxes you don't need to work with immediately the next time you start Eudora. You can always open any you need later. It's best not to have too many open at once. If you have a backup of EUDORA.INI, do as I suggested above and start Eudora again. Let us know what happens. If the .ini file is an old one made prior to installing 4.3, you might find that your Registration information is gone; but, you can always enter that later. I didn't get any of the "System resource" errors this time. This time, it took 10% of my available resources. It did come up in sponsored mode, but I still got the registration window. All the proper information was there, however, when I clicked "ok" (or whatever the button said), the ad area disappeared but the information didn't register in my software. Unfortunately, the toolbar is back to what it was the first time I started the new version, however, only half the top row is visible - most of one button, and all the rest on that level are not there - like the raised right section is obscuring them. The first time it came up, I got 4 new messages, but the program hung after the messages were filtered. I did <Ctrl><Alt><Del>, and it showed Eudora "Not Responding". I ended the task, and restarted. The toolbar is the same. There was no mail to download at first, so it came up ok. Later, there was a couple new messages, which downloaded ok, but my alert on new mail is not right - it's playing a different file than is specified in the Options. I'm afraid to try anything else at this point, <g> so I can't report on anything else. Sandy Walroth [email protected]

Sandy Walroth [email protected] **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Sandy, please take this the right way. I'm not criticizing you. But, 800 emails in the IN mailbox are just too many. Why keep that many there anyway? You need to make additional mailboxes by subject, sender, List, etc., and move most of those 800 emails to the additional mailboxes. Then, when you open Eudora with just the IN mailbox open, you won't put such a drain on your system. You see, now when you open Eudora, it must "load" all 800 of those emails at startup, even if you are not going to actually be using them. I use Eudora's filtering ability to Filter incoming email into their respective Mailboxes UPON DOWNLOADING THEM. Of course, there are some which don't match any of my many, many filters, and they DO end up in my IN Mailbox; however, when I read them, I move them to their proper Mailbox. That's the beauty of Eudora - you can Filter incoming emails into special Mailboxes to start with and NOT have your IN Mailbox cluttered up with that many messages. Try this: In TOOLS/OPTIONS/CATEGORY-Display, make sure that "Show Large Buttons" is NOT checked. I think that will solve the problem with the Tool Bar. Unfortunately, there IS still a glitch on some systems with viewing the Tool Bar icons in the Large size. I'm about to recommend something that may make you shudder, but which may also be necessary to "fix" your problems. There is evidently something amiss in the EUDORA.INI file. Don't worry, I've had this happen to me a couple of times. It seems that the EUDORA.INI that you backed up also has some corruption. There is one way, and only one way, to fix it, short of being a "guru" and knowing exactly what each line in the .INI file is supposed to look like. That way is to DELETE the EUDORA.INI file in your Eudora directory! Yes, you will lose ALL your settings, but, when it comes down to being able to use Eudora, re-doing everything is preferable to having it crash continuously. If you delete the .INI file, the next time you start Eudora, it will be like the first time you ever installed and used the program. You will have to set EVERYTHING all over again. That includes your Personalities and all other settings. The beauty of having MANY backups is that if you restore the most recent, and it still gives you problems, you can go to the next most recent and try it. If it too is bad, you can keep going back until you get one that works. Using the TaskZip application that I have, one can set it to keep as many past backups as are deemed appropriate. I backup each night, doing only the recently changed files, and keep one week's worth of daily backups. I also backup every Sunday, doing a COMPLETE directory backup, that is, EVERYTHING in the directory. I keep backups of the most recent 5 weekly backup files. I figured that any problem I run across will surely be so recent that somewhere back during the past 5 weeks, I will find a good EUDORA.INI. Having spoken with the team at QualComm many times, I have always been advised that, when all else fails, deleting the EUDORA.INI file and starting from "scratch" is sometimes the only recourse. I can tell you right now that MOST all corruption problems with the EUDORA.INI file happens because of OTHER problems in the program. And, these "other" problems are almost always caused by having too many emails in a Mailbox that is opened at startup. Here is a recommendation from a post on the Eudora Newsgroup: "You should try to keep the main IN and OUT mailboxes as small as reasonably practical, since these files are ALWAYS loaded into memory each time Eudora is started, and that eats up memory/resources. As a rule of thumb, you should transfer each message out of the IN box after you've initially read it. Where you transfer it to would likely depend on whether you need to take further action on it (say, "PENDING") or it can be permanently archived (say, "IN-MAR", this month)." Keep trying, and, please, keep us informed. We all learn from the problems of any user. Regards, SgtGeorge George W. I did exactly that, saving the messages that I needed to. The rest got moved out, and will be sorted through month by month. I'm down well below 100 messages in both the in and out boxes. >Keep trying, and, please, keep us informed. Snip Snip a lot. Since I have a fairly old system here as computers go, a 266 Pentium and all the other old boards that go with them, and do not have any of the problems like this set and others that are being talked about on this group lately I am wondering what is going on. I have upgraded all the way from Windows for Workgroups V3.11 to Win98SE and still going. I do not have any problems with resources at all. This makes me wonder just what is running in the back ground on the computer she has. What is setting up the problems. Go to the start button, and left click. Go down to the run selection. Select run and type in msconfig, and look at the window that comes up. Under the startup tab at the top, you will get a list of all the programs running in the back ground. There can easily be 20 or 30 programs if you are using Win98, and have added several programs. Several will leave things around even though you may have used add/remove programs control panel to remove them. Each of these use resources from all three of the main stacks called resources. You can remove the check mark in the square box to no longer run the selected program if you want to get rid of it. Since I have not cleaned up this disk for three or more years, I have 46 listed, but have unchecked all of them that I do not need. When you un check one, it remains to be rechecked if you discover that you need it after all. You can do the same for all the other tabs. This with running some program to check the registry for mistakes, can frequently clean up problems like those listed. Jack
