René, it's funny, but different programs cause problems for different users. I am a VERY dedicated PSP6 user, and I NEVER have the problems with it that you describe. I guess it depends on one's system. As to what you have in your System Tray, your's matches mine, except I use other programs for some of the ones you use. Also, I don't load ANY "mixer", since those are certainly memory hogs; I just made an icon in Quick Start and click on it if I need it. I, too, use an Atomic clock to keep my system's time set (AccuSet), but I don't load it with Windows; I click on it (again in Quick Start) when I want to set my time. I don't see any reason to have it loaded constantly, since I don't need my system time to be accurate to the second all the time. In fact, I just used Accuset for the first time in about 2 weeks (forgot about it) and found that my system had gained 45 seconds. I can live with that. Do you really need to have your Fax utility loaded all the time? Just curious. Again, if it's not used that often, it could be loaded when needed via an icon. They have experimented with having different combinations of programs open, and invariably have found that PSP6 is the culprit. Now, none of them will give up PSP6, but they have found that when using it, to shut down all other programs. I also have had the same problem with PSP both versions 5 and 6. Since I do web page design, I also like to have all the other programs open with it, but have found that it is easier to reopen the programs than to mess with having to reboot all the time ;) My system tray consists of the following on startup: Task Scheduler, Ensoniq Mixer, AnalogX MaxMem (available at www.analogx.com), Norton AV Auto Protect, AnalogX AtomicTimeSync, ZoneAlarm, Snappy Fax2000. I hope this discussion stays on the list as I have learned a lot from it and hope that I have contributed some also. :) Rene' (snip) **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT**************
Well, George, I just reported what some power PSP users have reported. I learned to use PSP at an online learning site called ZDU (now known as Smartplanet.Com). There are message boards where you can post and ask questions, etc. The resource problem has come up on these boards many times. Several of the posters with the problems who tried to help others were authors of books on PSP. I think in my case most of the problems with PSP come when I have IE and Eudora open at the same time as PSP. Now if I just want to look at something in PSP, it is fine, but if I start to create something, oops, there goes the system. I just avoid the problem by only having PSP open when I feel creative ;) I agree that I could get rid of the mixer and fax program in my startup. Haven't had any problems with them and resources are good so just haven't bothered. Now with my time setting program, it is a different story. You see I have a very unique computer in that it either loses time in a big way or gains time in a big way (I'm talking 10 to 15 minutes here) but never consistently. Since this is the only clock in the room, I'd like it to be right! Since I got my cable modem a month ago and have had the time program in the systray, the most it has been off is 10 seconds!!! But I still worship my picky lil puter and spend a lot of time with it <VBG> Rene' At 03:10 AM 6/1/2000 -0400, you wrote: >René, it's funny, but different programs cause problems for different users. > I >am a VERY dedicated PSP6 user, and I NEVER have the problems with it that you >describe. What is PSP? Is it a part of Eudora? Nora

It could be getting weak. If the battery is OK, here's a thought. When my grandchildren visit (they're here now, until Sunday night), they play many games that are old DOS programs. I can ALWAYS count on my system clock getting messed up when DOS games are played! I've never received an acceptable answer as to WHY this happens -- it just does! If you're using any intensive DOS program, it COULD be the culprit. If not, then I would certainly check out the systems battery. How old is the mother board that you are now using? Losing, or gaining, that many minutes over a short time has to be either a failing battery, or DOS programs that skew the time. And, as far as that goes, why do you need to load the time-setting program into memory? Why couldn't you just make an icon for it and activate it whenever you feel it is necessary? (Also have a suggestion on how to type your name and use the "real" "é" instead of the "e'". To make the "é" just hold down the ALT key and type 130 on the number pad on your keyboard. Just a suggestion.) SgtGeorge
