    1. Re: [EUDORA] THIS IS NOT A VIRUS

    3. Thanks, Debbie, I wasn't implying that Eudora was a virus, but rather that maybe the same thing was happening on this list as did to another perfectly valid and reliable list(VIRUS-DISCUSSION-D@rootsweb.com ) where someone had a virus and when you got a response from her, it passed back and forth to others as they communicated to each other who had got her infected response. The way it spread was using the same subject which the original inquirer (me) had sent to the list. That's why I, when I saw several people writing to me at the same time, and one had some funny 'squiggles' in the Subject line, I became wary....not wanting to go through the clean up process as I did before. Yes, I have been using Outlook Express for a long time, (came on my computer) but a techie installed Eudora and said it was better. I want to transfer over, soon as I can save my old OE folders' contents somehow. My problem is, I haven't been able to send out email with Eudora, because my old address listed there 'joanarc10@home.com is not longer applicable, and that's what was used in the initial setup of Eudora. A couple from this list have given me ideas on how to rectify it, and I am still trying. Please do not take me off the list....I know how to unsubscribe should I want to. Just being super cautious in all my emailing, Joan A ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie Schnell Woolard" <djwoolard@earthlink.net> To: "joan" <joanarc10@attbi.com> Sent: Friday, December 14, 2001 8:53 AM Subject: Re: [EUDORA] THIS IS NOT A VIRUS > At 09:39 PM 12/13/01 -0800, joan wrote: > >hi! > > > > I will seem paranoid to all of you probably, but I got several emails > >from various people with EUDORIA's email address, with the same subject > >that looked suspicious, but something about it gave me pause. 3. I just wish that users like Paul, who must be a "newbie", would check before sending out such bad information. One problem is that he blasted this all over the Internet, to just about all the addresses he had in his address book. Then, Bill (also a "newbie") forwarded it on to lots of other addresses. Folks, that's the way the writers of this infernal HOAX intended for it to be -- scare the BeJesus out of you and cause you to further propagate the HOAX. WARD OF WARNING!!!!! ANYTIME you receive an email of a VIRUS WARNING, please go to the web site for your particular Anti-Virus (AV) program and check it out. OK? And, NO, "better safe than sorry" is NOT a good rule to live by. A good rule is "better check it out before I do a knee-jerk reaction". 3. hi! I will seem paranoid to all of you probably, but I got several emails from various people with EUDORIA's email address, with the same subject that looked suspicious, but something about it gave me pause. I suspected a virus, because the same thing happened to me on another Virus discussion list where BadTrans was attaching itself to email sent to listers by the infected computer. If I'm wrong about this (I suspect others would have come upon this if it is a virus)...please forgive the warning, but I deleted them all post haste because I didn't want to fall into the same trap. 3. I have never seen this discussed before, so am sending in hopes it will make it easier for users to edit the EUDORA.INI file; especially for those who are afraid to mess with it. I found out by accident how to do this. Go to this URL: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/ini.html You will see a page titled "EUDORA.INI Settings File". Scroll down to find the setting you want to change, or add, if it's not already there. Once you find the setting you want to change or add, click on the underlined name in the left of the table. You will have to have Eudora running for this to work properly. Once you click, the focus should shift to the Eudora program. (If it doesn't, just click on the Eudora icon in the tray at the bottom of your screen.) You will then see a window where you can make the changes. Let's use an example to show you how it works. Suppose you wish to be able to edit any header of an incoming email. Normally you can't do this, since the default setting doesn't allow it. Scroll down until you see "EditAllHeaders". Click on it. In the window that pops up in Eudora, change "New Value" to "1" and click OK. You have just edited the EUDORA.INI file! Another good one to edit is "FilterTransferName". You know when you set up a filter and choose the "Transfer" Action, on the right you see the long bar that you can click to choose which Mailbox/Folder to send the filtered email to. Change this value to 1, 2, or 3. (0 is the default.) Number 3 works best for me. One that I added was "ExtraHeaders". When you receive this email, in the headers section, you should see clickable links to my web page, and to "Germanna Notes". These headers were added by clicking on the "Extra Headers" and typing in the required text. The format looks like this: X-WebSite: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/index.html If you want to add more than one "ExtraHeader", you MUST add "\r\n" (without the quotes) between the headers. Example: X-AlternateAddress: whoever@someplace.com\r\nX-WebSite: http://www.johndoe.com I would advise everyone to NOT change any settings unless he/she knows positively what he/she is doing. If you have questions, they should be addressed here on this List before making changes. AND, no one except a bone-fide expert should make any changes in any sections except [SETTINGS]. Further, I advise looking at all the possible settings and see if any of them could help you. SgtGeorge George W. Durman

    1. [EUDORA] Re:Can Eudora reject attachments?
    2. George, Jack, Elizabeth-- Didn't mean to imply in anyway that limiting size would plug virus/worm holes. Personally, I don't send the large messages or attachments directly to the trash. I review large messages and then decide IF I want to download from the server. I also use MailWasher. Between Eudora, MailWasher, daily updated Anti-virus definitions and a firewall, I am almost safe. I still scan every attachment that I do accept, and have taught all my correspondents to send advance notice of attachments. The rare soul that doesn't will receive a request from me to confirm that they actually sent it. See -- I was paying attention to all your emails, and am mighty grateful for each and every one;-) Rel@ively safe, Patrice At 12/8/2001 06:00 PM, you wrote: >At 01:54 AM 12/8/01, you wrote: >>I don't think it is advisable to set up any email browser to automatically >>reject, or delete, attachments. Probably I am too paranoid about getting a virus infection. I have Zone Alarm and AVG (always up-dated) which has caught and isolated every virus I have received so far. Many thanks to the experts for all the ideas. Between the mailing lists and PC 911 I do get a lot of help with my computer problems. Maybe sometime I will be able to help a friend in need! If DSL, it is easy to have the e-mail sent to special folders on the hard disk, where they can be deleted easily. The speed of DSL will download large files in quick order. If dial-up however, you are in a different world. There you need to possibly set a size requirement, but make it large enough that it will stop pix, but not Gedcom files and text files you might want to use. I am probably letting myself in for a flood again, but with a cable modem, I download all the e-mail to the computer, then sort it out. Shakey Jack

Probably you are right. My idea was to reject attachments as a default, then when someone sent a message that s/he had a genealogy file for me I would open the gate, so to speak, until the attachment had arrived. Whenever I have an attached file to send someone I include in the message information about the size and ask if s/he wants the file. 3. I don't think it is advisable to set up any email browser to automatically reject, or delete, attachments. I, for one, get too many genealogy-related files as attachments to even WANT to do this. Trying to delete attachments, or reject them, is kind of like telling the USPS to NOT deliver ANY mail to your mail box, just on the off-chance that you will receive something you don't want to receive. And, rejecting emails over a certain size, is in the same category. Elizabeth, what if someone sends you a GEDCOM that exceeds the 30 Kb size? Do you want to dismiss it out of hand? Folks, there are better ways than rejecting attachments, or emails over a certain size, to stop infections. You're plugging up the wrong holes. 2. Elizabeth, I don't reject attachments, but I do reject messages over 30K. That catches most (but not all) attachments. Go to Tools > Options... > Incoming Mail. Then check "Skip Messages over [ ] K." You fill in the size. It's not perfect, put it also stops many of the long jokes and forever Forwarded chain letters. BUT you must take the time to delete the messages from the server (unless you can set a filter to do that automagically).
