Two hopefully good helps. Number one. Go to the Start icon, and left click it. on the drop down list (menu) pick Find on the next drop down, pick Files or Folders. in the new window, labeled Find: All files, Go to the spot labeled Named: and type in eudora.ini go to the Find Now button, and left click the button. The find function will find any and all copies of the file, eudora.ini on your computer. You can use this to edit the file, copy the file or other items. Number two. Open the explorer window, either by right clicking My Computer, and pick Explore or any other method you know to get the window open. Go to the menu line, and left click View. On the drop down, left click Folder Options. On new window, select the View tab. On this view, under hidden files, click on show all files. Go down to Hide file extensions for known file types, and un-click it. Click OK button. the *.ext should show for *.ini files as well as others. Now the bad part, may not always work, if you have a version of windows that some Computer Manufacture has done things on. Jack

You and probably most users here are concerned only about their own system, but the issue is much more and leads quickly to privacy issues in general and corresponding legislation. Ad sponsored SW - like Eudora - is a good idea, but where are the limits in regards to privacy? Imagine this Aureate (or similar SW) finds out, that you have subscribed to some Genealogy lists and then keeps on sending eMail ads about genealogy books. The Internet Societal Taskforce (www.istf.org) has a WG that is working on such issues. After I've heard about that OptOut from you (thanks for it!), I informed the ISTF list about it and there was quite vivid response! Pls. do keep us informed about your talks with Steve Gibson! Cheers, Stefan Probst

In case any of you are using WinZip, there is a new Beta release available at: http://www.winzip.com/betawz.htm If you have a registered copy of WinZip, installing this Beta over the top of your old WinZip will keep it registered. This latest Build should be stable, since I've been using the Betas since the beginning and have had absolutely no problems. If you are a registered user, when the final release is made available, installing it over your existing version will keep it registered. Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Folks, I may have to do some back pedaling on the subject. Some users who installed OptOut have programs or utilities that no longer work properly. I've run into this now myself. Specifically, when I download email that contains HTML advertisements, the graphics files will no longer download in Eudora!!!!! I began to suspect problems when I installed a new Beta for GetRight last night. Here's the message I received during the installation: *************** Removing the Advertising Files used by GetRight: GetRight shows advertising banners to people who have not yet paid for GetRight. After buying, you do not need to see the advertisements if you do not want to, so the advertising system files may be removed from your computer. Warning: These advertising files are shared with a large number of other programs. (List of programs - see other email for the list.) While GetRight will work fine with these files removed, some other programs using this advertising system may give errors or not work if these files are removed. If you remove these advertising files and other programs do not work, you will need to re-install that other program to restore the advertising files that it requires. To remove all the Aureate/Radiate advertising files, just download and run this program (there was a clickable URL here). *************** Now, it appears that Eudora was one of the programs that also installed Aureate files, or at least needed some of the files in order to download the ad graphics that came in the HTML emails. I have not decided yet what to do about it. I'm getting ready to go to he OptOut website and ask the producer of the software about this problem, and a couple of other things. I need to know the following: 1) If I have ZoneAlarm installed, will that prevent data from being sent from my system back to Aureate? I suspect it won't, since ZoneAlarm blocks "pulls" from the system, where Aureate sends "pushes". 2) Is there any way to block Aureate from sending "pushes" from certain programs, while leaving others free to do so? 3) In light of the statement by Steve Gibson, I need to go to his web site and chat with him about Aureate. Then, I need to ask him, IF he has determined that his first assessment was truly in error, if there is any way to reinstall Aureate on my system, short of reinstalling every danged program that uses Aureate. I will keep you informed about what I learn. It's really no big thing, since the ONLY HTML graphics I really care about come with a daily notification of new animated GIF files. I always save them for possible future use. I can really live without them, but just wonder if any more glitches will show up as I use programs I haven't opened since removing Aureate from my system. Later, SgtGeorge Listowner
Last night, I found what is supposed to be a complete list of the programs that install Aureate on your system when you install them. I have no way of knowing how inclusive the list is. OK guys and gals! Remember what has been said about BACKING UP your important/critical files? Sandy's email just confirmed how important it is to do backups. BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!!!!! And, if any of you missed it, I've often advocated using a program/utility that does automatic backups EVERY day/night! For some reason, Windows likes to corrupt .ini files from time to time, and you never know when it will happen. I've had to restore the EUDORA.INI file a few times, and am just thankful that I had backup copies available to use. WINDOWS IS NOT PERFECT!!!!! Windows WILL corrupt .ini files from time to time!!!!! If you don't backup such files, you will regret it!!!!!! And, it seems that Windows has a penchant for screwing with .ini files of Email browsers that are NOT Microsoft products. 'Nuff said. Not saying that MS doesn't protect our "other" email browser files like it does MS products, but..... In case any of you missed it, I have often "plugged" a FREE utility called "TaskZip", which you can configure to backup ANY files on your system, at a specific time, at specific intervals. My TaskZip backs up my Eudora critical files EVERY night!!!!! And that includes EUDORA.INI. If I need to, I can go back days, weeks, or months, and dig out past EUDORA.INI files from the .zip files made by TaskZip. Mari, yes you can grumble here. (GRIN) When I saw your first post and saw the misspelling in the part you extracted, I thought something wasn't right at your server. The only help I can offer is to call them via phone and bend their ears severely. Sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn't, due to most personal at servers never admitting that anything is wrong. Let us know if you get it fixed. George
