    3. George, you suggested the other day that I ought to download 4.3 in one of its three formats. Can I invoke it in my machine AND leave myself the option to return to my 3.0.6 (32) Light version? I love what I have, and have read too much doom and gloom about all the things that (can) go wrong with 4.3 David Lewin London ------- The Search & Unite office attempts to help the many who suspect that despite the passage of so many years since World War II, someone may still exist "out there" http://remember.org/unite/

    3. A few days ago, I was talking to someone about net security, and they mentioned they were running an anonymous cookie program. Did some hunting, and found Luckman's Anonymous Cookie V1.0. I've installed it; you HAVE to enter a name and business for the cookies that sites ask for from you. If I'm just surfing, any sites that ask get a cookie from "me" at "HAHA, Inc". ;-) It puts an icon in your taskbar, so you can switch from anonymous to 'you' at a mouse click. Here's the URL where I got it. http://www.luckman.com Regards, Dave

    3. OOPS!!!!! I forgot to send a list of the known programs that secretly install Aureate on your system. This is not an inclusive list, but is the most current I could find. I really haven't taken the time to go through the list, item by item, but, just scanning it, there are 2-3 dozen programs listed here that I have on MY system right now! Is that "normal"? Where do they come from? Is someone trying to see where I go to hunt for ancestors? If so, reckon they would help me find them???? Carol (snip) **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Hello All. Just a note for any new subscribers to this VIRUS-DISCUSSION Mailing List. Although some of the posts seen here may not seem to be "Virus-related", they are, nonetheless, in the same category as "trojans", "worms", etc. The most recent subject has been those hidden applications that harvest information from our systems, and send the data to various organizations that use the demographic data for creating the CDs that Mass Mailers use, or that Telemarketers use. OptOut is a utility/application that, once installed and stays "memory resident", finds, at each Windows re-boot, files on our systems that are put there by the Aureate/Radiate company, and that finds Registry entries made by the same company. The Aureate/Radiate company "claims" that it is neither doing anything wrong, or that is "bad business practice". What is happening, in fact, is that Aureate/Radiate has made "deals" with many software producers to include the Aureate "hidden" application in their programs. When you install a software program that has made such a "deal", behind the scenes, unbeknownst to you, the installation process also installs Aureate. When you use one of the programs that has made the "deal", Aureate is searching through your system and gathering demographic data on your Net/Web usage, and sending the data directly to Aureate. Supposedly, the information gathered is restricted to such data as to which web sites you have visited, how often, how long you stayed at those web sites, what you clicked on, what "Ads" you "visited", what you ordered, what you bought, etc., etc. There is SUPPOSED to be no information to identify you, your email address, your postal address, etc.; however, some "hackers" have been able to access the Aureate site and actually find THEIR data, complete with name, address, email address, and so on. This is really scary! To answer Carol's question: "Where do they come from? Is someone trying to see where I go to hunt for ancestors? If so, reckon they would help me find them????" Carol, they are trying to see where you go to hunt for ANYTHING! Not just genealogy data! And, another scary thing is that, not only do such applications search your system for data, using the "pull" technology, they also attempt to SEND things to your system, using the "push" technology. If you also have ZoneAlarm, or any other "Personal Firewall", installed on your system, you can see how often these mercenary companies attempt to access your system, and, sometimes, even to access your BIOS!!!!! This is BEYOND scary! If someone can "backtrack" into your system when your modem is connected, and get to your BIOS, they can do ANYTHING to your system! Not that we've found any that do this, yet, but the possibility is there. Using ZoneAlarm, I HAVE had a few "hits" that tell me so-and-so IP is trying to access my BIOS. 'Nuff of that. Now to something I just tried out, in the line of protecting your system from unwanted access. I've bragged on ZoneAlarm, mainly because it is FREE, and because it is fairly simple to use. Yesterday, I received a notice from McAfee about their "Personal FireWall". Never making recommendations without having tried out a product, I paid the fee to install the "Firewall". (For current users of McAfee's "Clinic", the price for the FireWall is $19.95, as opposed to the normal $39.95 price.) Here are my comments on McAfee's Personal FireWall: 1) It costs you $19.95; 2) It does, basically, the same thing that the FREE ZoneAlarm does; 3) It doesn't have the depth of options that does ZoneAlarm; 4) But, it seems that you don't need to make all those individual option adjustments, since the McAfee FireWall does it all for you; 5) McAfee FireWall, so far, has caused absolutely NO conflicts on my system as ZoneAlarm sometimes does; 6) Until I have used the McAfee Personal FireWall for a few weeks, I won't make any recommendations. Just be aware that the "push" and "pull" technology now available acts almost EXACTLY as some viruses, trojans, and worms acts. If you don't have the proper protection, your system is very vulnerable! It doesn't matter if you click on the HAPPY-99.EXE link in an email, or if you are attacked by an information gatherer, your system is still being manipulated by outside forces! My final advice? Download the FREE OptOut application and get rid of all those Aureate files and Registry entries on your system. The only harm that will result from this is harm to Aureate, in that they will no longer receive secret data from your system. Download SOME kind of Firewall, whether it's the free ZoneAlarm, or something like the McAfee Personal Firewall. Norton also has such a Firewall built into their 2000 series of utilities. JUST PROTECT YOURSELVES! 'Til next time, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Knoxville, TN VIRUS-DISCUSSION List Administrator

LOL I first heard of BlackICE Defender via ZDnet. I was referred to their "Products" link at http://www.zdnet.com/products. This took me to a PC Magazine article about BlackICE and what it does. Basically, it refers to those with DSL or cable modem access to the Net. The article talks about those users on a network, then goes on to explain a firewall. It says that "what sets BlackICE apart from a firewall is that it dynamically adjusts the degree of security as it watches for attacks against your system. when an attack is executed against the workstation, BlackICE blocks all access from the intruder's IP address." The article later addresses home users "who usually do not have an intricate firewall setup but want to be made aware of who is trying to access their machines . . ." Single user price is $39.95. Now, my question is: With Norton Internet Security 2000 on my computer, do I also need BlackICE? Does anyone out there with either product have an opinion? TIA Patrisia **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Yes, you need some kind of "firewall" on your PC, even if you have Norton installed. I don't "think" that Norton Internet Security 2000 will set up a "firewall" for you, on your personal system. As to whether you should pay $39.95 - NO, NO, NO!!!!! You can get exactly the same protection from a FREE program called ZoneAlarm. Just because a program promises great things, and is highly priced enough to make you think that it MUST be worth it, doesn't mean that it is actually worth anything. Go to: http://www.zonelabs.com to download ZoneAlarm. (P.S. Since I have never used Norton Internet Security 2000, I guess I should say that I don't "think" that this sets up a PC "firewall" for you. 2. Listowner
    3. Hello Jack and Patrisia (and all the rest): Glad some of you checked out the OptOut that I recommended. Since I posted the original notes, lots has been going on concerning the Aureate/Radiate "spy files" that most everyone finds on his/her system. There have been lots of private meetings between the writer of OptOut and Aureate; also, official concerns have been checking into Aureate's practices. To date, it seems that Aureate has "convinced" most researchers that they are doing nothing wrong; they sure know how to "spin" what they are doing and make it sound non-harmful, non-illegal, non-immoral, and just plain "good business practice". I think that further in depth investigation will show that Aureate/Radiate IS sending data from users' systems back to Aureate/Radiate. As to AllAdvantage, well..... It's just another of those programs/utilities that is based on a "scheme" and is nothing more than a glorified pyramidal "chain" thing. Again, TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch)! A person who spends several hours a day aiding such a program MIGHT make a few bucks a month, but think of how much benefit the company is getting! All you are doing is causing more and more email addresses to be added to someone's CD of "a million email addresses" that buyers can use to SPAM the dickens out of Net/Web users. I tried a similar program, Ebongo, a Netscape add-on, and became disgusted with it the first time I tried it. Just remember, even though such things are not viruses, trojans, worms, etc., they nevertheless create much of the SPAM that we encounter daily in our personal email. The only thing I can say about similar utilities/programs/applications is IF IT DEALS WITH "MAKING MONEY", HAS TO DO WITH ADVERTISEMENTS, GIVES YOU "INSTANT ACCESS" TO WEB ADVERTISEMENTS, OR "GIVES YOU SOMETHING FOR NOTHING", IT SHOULD BE AVOIDED! Since installing OptOut and ZoneAlarm, I haven't noticed much of a drop-off in email SPAM (there DOES seem to be a little less), but once my personal email address eventually gets dropped from SPAM bulk mailers I am already on, I fully expect to receive less and less. Let's face it, those jerks ARE pulling our email addresses from somewhere! One last note: I have had emails from several other users of OptOut and ZoneAlarm, about having problems with using "good" programs on their systems. I have experienced the same problems myself. There are two that merit mention: 1) If you use McAfee AV, and have SecureCast on your system (SecureCast goes online at set intervals and checks for, and downloads if necessary, new DAT files), you may have problems with SecureCast. Here's how I solved the problem: I configured SecureCast so that it is NOT automatically loaded when I start Windows. A couple times a week, I manually start it, AFTER exiting from ZoneAlarm. That lets SecureCast to work and download new DAT files. 2) I haven't figured out which program, OptOut or ZoneAlarm, is the culprit, but when both are installed and activated, AND you are using a 3rd-party email browser, such as Eudora, OR you use MS Internet Explorer (MSIE), and find that you can no longer use MSIE, and that any 3rd-party email browser that calls on MSIE won't allow downloading of graphics files automatically in emails. For some reason, one of these programs makes a change in your Internet Options settings. It took me several weeks to find out that the change made was that "Use a Proxy Server" was checked! If you are on a PC at home, "Use a Proxy Server" will screw up lots of Internet-related programs. "Use a Proxy Server" means that you are on some kind of "Net", and, since you're not, it stymies your system. If you've had any of these problems, just reconfigure your Internet Options. Go to Control Panel. Open Internet Options. Click on the "Connections" Tab. Click on "LAN Settings" at the bottom. Make sure that "Use a Proxy Server" is NOT checked. (I "suspect" that the first time that ZoneAlarm is installed, IT makes this change, thought I can't prove it conclusively; however, by testing (I uninstalled ZoneAlarm, unchecked "Use a Proxy Server", and everything worked fine. Then, I reinstalled ZoneAlarm and found that "Use a Proxy Server" was again checked.), it "seems" that ZoneAlarm IS doing it.) Guess we all have to keep experimenting with these "new" things and reporting back here to these Lists when we find problems, and ESPECIALLY if we find solutions to the problems. Then, we can email the writers of any problem-causing utilities and make suggestions. Please, keep using OptOut and ZoneAlarm. If you have problems you cannot solve, let me know - I'll try to figure out a cure. In the meantime, once you get your system working the way it should, using these programs, you can be assured that your system is NOT sending out information to those who would use the information for SPAMMING. Interestingly, the "aureate" that attached itself to my file and registry was DISABLED around the time I installed NIS2K. My ports tested out as "stealth." I highly recommend this program, along with SystemWorks2k--they've definitely made my life easier while on the computer. Patrisia **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT**************

    3. Periodically, I have a problem whereby Eudora won't let me send. I get an error message that says Can't relay. Well, my temper got the best of me the other day after several trys, and I clicked on the send icon again....only this time with a deliberate action. I pushed the mouse key, and made sure that it was a full press.....and it worked. The thing went. Same thing happened today. Interesting, to say the least. Either I'm not completely depressing the mouse key, or the icon is not working properly. Don't know which, except that it's the only time I have trouble in regards to any clicking of that mouse key. Anyone else having the problem?? Mari

What ZoneAlarm is saying, and doing, is that so-and-so server tried to access your system and that ZoneAlarm blocked the access. SgtGeorge
