    3. AND a little more to be wary of: Variations of 'ILOVEYOU' Virus Evolve NEW YORK (AP) - New variations of the software virus that seduced computer users with an e-mail note proclaiming "ILOVEYOU" were already circulating by this evening (Thursday evening), including one disguised as a joke with an e-mail attachment reading "Very Funny". The virus has crippled government and corporate computer networks around the world. In another malicious twist, the virus was designed to destroy several types of increasingly popular computer files, including those storing pictures, video and music. ************************* If you click on the attachment for this new worm, you can just about kiss your graphics files and music files goodbye, forever, if you don't have them backed up! The present federal law considers this action a "minor crime". It should be a "Capital Felony", and the penalty should not be a maximum of 5 years in prison, it should be death by the crushing weight of 10 million computer systems! Actually, I think death by putting a computer monitor "where the sun doesn't shine" would be more appropriate, but that would surely be cruel and unusual punishment. SgtGeorge Listowner

    2. VIRUS-DISCUSSION & EUDORA-MAIL Listowner
    3. You can read all about this latest virus/worm at: Norton AV: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.loveletter.a.html McAfee AV: http://download.mcafee.com/ For McAfee, you need the latest Scan Engine: http://www.mcafee.com/box_products.asp Here's what McAfee has to say: *************** Profile Virus Name: VBS/Loveletter Aliases: VBS.Loveletter.a Variants: None Date Added: 5/4/00 Virus Information Discovery Date: 5/4/00 Origin: Phillipines Type: Virus SubType: VbScript Risk Assessment: High-Outbreak Minimum Dat: 4077 Minimum Engine: 4.0.35 Virus Characteristics This is a VBScript worm with virus qualities. This worm will arrive in an email message with this format: Subject "ILOVEYOU" Message: "kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me." Attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs" If the user runs the attachment, the worm runs, using the Windows Scripting Host program. This is not normally present on Windows 9x or Windows NT, unless Internet Explorer 5 is installed. When the worm is first run it drops copies of itself in the following places : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSKERNEL32.VBS C:\WINDOWS\WIN32DLL.VBS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.VBS It also adds the registry keys : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ MSKernel32=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSKernel32.vbs HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\ Win32DLL=C:\WINDOWS\Win32DLL.vbs in order to run the worm at system startup. The worm replaces the following files: *.JPG *.JPEG *.MP3 *.MP2 with copies of itself and it adds the extension .VBS to the original filename. So PICT.JPG would be replaced with PICT.JPG.VBS and this would contain the worm. The worm also overwrites the following files: *.VBS *.VBE *.JS *.JSE *.CSS *.WSH *.SCT *.HTA with copies of itself and renames the files to *.VBS. The worm creates a file "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.HTM" which contains the worm, and this is then sent to the IRC channels if the mIRC client is installed. This is accomplished by the worm replacing the file SCRIPT.INI. After a short delay the worm uses Microsoft Outlook to send copies of itself to all entries in the address book. The mails will be of the same format as the original mail. This worm also has another trick up it's sleeve in that it tries to download and install an executable file called WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE from the Internet. This exe file is a password stealing program that will email any cached passwords to the mail address [email protected] In order to facilitate this download the worm sets the start-up page of Microsoft Internet Explorer to point to the web-page containing the password stealing trojan. The email sent by this program is as follows : -------------copy of email sent----------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Barok... email.passwords.sender.trojan X-Mailer: Barok... email.passwords.sender. trojan---by: spyder Host: [machine name] Username: [user name] IP Address: [victim IP address] RAS Passwords:...[victim password info] Cache Passwords:...[victim password info] -------------copy of email sent----------- The password stealing trojan is also installed via the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\WIN-BUGSFIX to autorun at system startup. After it has been run, the password stealing trojan copies itself to WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WinFAT32.EXE and replaces the registry key with: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ WinFAT32=WinFAT32.EXE Symptoms VirusScan 4.0.3+ Toolkit 8 Method Of Infection VirusScan 4.0.3+ Toolkit 8 Removal Instructions Script,Batch,Macro and non memory-resident: Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal. Note- It is very common for macro viruses to disable options within Office applications, for example in Word, the macro protection warning commonly is disabled. After cleaning macro viruses, ensure that your previously set options are again enabled. PE,Trojan,Internet Worm and memory resident: Use specified engine and DAT files for detection. To remove, boot to MS-DOS mode or use an emergency boot diskette and use the command line scanner such as "SCANPM C: /CLEAN /ALL" DAT not yet available: In the event you have this virus, trojan or Internet worm on your system(s) and the specified DAT is not yet available, refer to the documentation posted for submitting a sample to McAfee AVERT for resolution. *************** I say again, "DO NOT CLICK ON AN ATTACHMENT TO "ANY" EMAIL, until you have satisfied the following questions: 1) Did you ask for the attached file? 2) Do you know the purported sender of the attachment? 3) Did you ask the purported sender if he/she actually meant to send you an attached file? 4) Then, ignore 1 through 3 above, and delete the file, without clicking on it!!!!! That's my humble advice. I recently received 2 attached files from a friend, both .exe files. I asked him if he really sent them. He said yes. I then deleted them! I'm taking no chances! His system may have been infected by these two files and the problems won't show up for some time. I would rather miss some "nice little joke program" than to risk infection. I guess you could say I'm paranoid, but "my" system has never been infected with a virus or a worm, mostly because I refuse to click on an attachment, even if my McAfee AV program didn't warn me about it. Better safe than sorry. Regards, SgtGeorge Listowner

    1. [EUDORA] Security Hole in EUDORA Email Browser!!!!! READ!!!!!
    2. EUDORA-MAIL & VIRUS-DISCUSSION Listowner
    3. There is an article on ZDNet, concerning a "security hole" in QualComm's Eudora Email Browser. Please log on and read it. QualComm says it will "fix" this security risk in the next update. http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2557027,00.html To fix the problem now, here are instructions: *************** QUALCOMM recommends that users edit their Eudora.ini file and add the following line: WarnLaunchExtensions=exe|com|bat|cmd|pif|htm|do|xl|reg|lnk to their "[Settings]" section. (The default is to warn for all of these extensions except the "lnk" one.) Qualcomm has said that the next version of Eudora will warn for .lnk files as well, by default. *************** If you use Eudora's "Tools/Options/Extra Warnings" and put a check mark in "Warn Me when I Launch a Program from a Message", the above line will be added to EUDORA.INI, but it will not include "lnk" at the end. That's why you need to either add the complete line (if you don't already have it), or to add the "|lnk" to the end of an existing line. (The "|" is made by holding down the Shift key and hitting the key for the "\" backslash.) If you don't have time to log on to ZDNet and read the article, here's the gist: *************** A researcher has discovered a security hole in Qualcomm Inc.'s (Nasdaq: QCOM) Eudora e-mail program that could allow a hacker to run code on a user's machine. The exploit requires that a user open an e-mail file and click on a link in the message (usually a blue color, and underlined; it may appear as an actual URL, or it may be simply something like "Click Here", or just clickable blue underlined text). When the user clicks the link, the code (attachment - virus, worm, etc.) is executed. The trick, explained below, is to mask the warning that Eudora normally displays when a user tries to run an executable file that is sent as an attachment. The hacker would send the user TWO attachments, the executable file and a hyperlink (.lnk) that points to the other attachment. If the user clicks on that (the hyperlink), the executable code will run without Eudora displaying the warnings. *************** I suspect that Eudora is not the only email browser that has this problem. I think we'll see shortly that other browsers are susceptible to the same problem. Leave it to the hackers to find new ways to screw around with us and corrupt our files and hard drives! I just wish they would get jobs and do something beneficial for humanity for a change. SgtGeorge Listowner

    1. Re: [EUDORA] E-Mail Delivery Proof

    3. Forgot to add that, if one is NOT using Eudora, and his/her "other" email browser doesn't support the Return Receipt tool, "[email protected]", in CC: or BCC:, DOES work! In fact, it works quite well and sends you back a "Proof of Delivery" that is nicely formatted and gives you an email that you can save or print for proof. But, like the "Return Receipt" tool in Eudora, "[email protected]" depends on the recipient clicking to send back the receipt. If he/she chooses "never", "ignore", or whatever, neither Eudora or "[email protected]" will deliver a Return Receipt to you. So, for us Eudora users, "[email protected]" is not necessary at all. In case you've never used it, and want to, the icon at the top looks like a letter (colored kind of yellow, I guess depending on your color settings in Windows), with a green square overlapping the upper left of the envelope. You just click on it before queuing your email. Just be sure you don't activate this tool if you're sending email to a Mailing List!!!!! SgtGeorge At 12:10 AM 04/27/2000, George W. I love what I have, and have read too much doom and gloom about all the things that (can) go wrong with 4.3 David Lewin London **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** David, here is what I recommend when upgrading from one version to another, to make sure you can still use the older version if you are not happy with the newer version. You can either install the latest version directly into the drive/directory where the older program is located, OR, install the newer version into a new drive/directory. The former allows the newer version to pick up all you settings, stored emails, etc. The latter starts you out with a "clean slate". IMHO, it's too much trouble to install into a new directory and then have to copy all the necessary files from the old directory to the new one. So, I recommend installing the new version directly over the top of the older version; however, that doesn't mean that you should lose the option of going back to the older version later. Here's how. BEFORE you install the newer version over the top of the older version, COPY everything in the directory to a safe place, so that if you later want to go back to the older version, you may do so. Example: If 3.0.6 resides in C:\Eudora (as an example), copy the ENTIRE C:\Eudora directory to somewhere, say, C:\Eudora306Save. Of course, you should create that directory first (the C:\Eudora306Save directory), before copying the files and data. Then, install the new 4.3 into the old directory where 3.0.6 was located. That way, if something happens and you need to go back to 3.0.6, all you have to do is rename C:\Eudora (containing the new 4.3) to something like C:\Eudora43, and then rename C:\Eudora306Save to C:\Eudora. This will get you back to the original 3.0.6 version, except that any email you received or sent, using the new 4.3, won't show up there. There are ways to pull the newly received and sent emails back into the 3.0.6 version directory, but they are just too complicated to worry about here. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER install a newer version of a program into the same directory as an older version WITHOUT first copying the ENTIRE directory, files, sub-directories and their files, to somewhere safe. Sometimes, you can, if you want to regress to an earlier version, merely reinstall the older version back into the original directory and have no problems; however, sometimes newer versions use different algorithms and database structures, and reverting to an older version will cause many problems, due to the differences in format. My advice? Copy everything in your older version directory to a safe place. Install the newer version into the original directory. Try it out. If you're satisfied, maybe 3-4 weeks down the road, delete the "safe place" directory. If you're NOT satisfied, delete the newer version directory and rename the "safe place" directory back to the original name. Confused? If so, post it here and we'll help you. Actually, I don't think that anyone who upgrades from ANY older version, like 3.0.6, will ever have any need to go back to it.
