    1. [EUDORA] Living, While Growing Older
    2. George W. Durman
    3. Please excuse this off-topic post (and from the Listowner at that!). It was so touching, I thought you should read it. SgtGeorge *************** LIVING WHILE GROWING OLDER The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around, when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!", and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?", I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel." "No, seriously," I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!", she told me. After class we walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine", as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon, and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up, and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet, and I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three-by-five cards on the floor. Frustrated, and a little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. "There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success: "You have to laugh and find humor every day. "You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! "There is a huge difference between growing OLDER and growing UP. If you are nineteen years old, and lie in bed for one full year, and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up, by always finding the opportunity in change. "Have no regrets. We elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did NOT do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets." She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose". She challenged each of us to study the lyrics, and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught, by example, that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. If you read this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family. We send these words in loving memory of ROSE. *************** [This might be one of those "fake" stories that wend their way through the Net/Web, but wouldn't you like to think that it is "real"? As we go about our genealogy pursuits, we often run into ancestors who were exactly like Rose. My grandmother, Nora (WILKINSON) BROYLES, never attended college, and never spoke at a college banquet, but she inspired not only all her descendants, but her entire community, with her wisdom, compassion, and just general common sense. She died on her birthday, at the age of 100 years. "Rose" reminds me of my "Mamaw", and I send this as a tribute to both of them.] SgtGeorge

Thanks! Liz, Hollywood, FL **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Liz is correct in that I recommended BackDora as a backup program. Since that time, I found another, which I now use. That one is TaskZip. It's really a matter of choice and I won't recommend one over the other. Will just say that, personally, I liked the way TaskZip works a little better than BackDora. Actually, it's been so long that I don't remember much about BackDora, other than I liked TaskZip more. Such programs as these are ESSENTIAL in these days of viruses, worms, trojans, etc., which could wipe out your hard drive, or otherwise render your system unusable. The important thing is to get SOMETHING that will AUTOMATICALLY back up the programs and files that you deem CRITICAL!!!!! TaskZip allows you to select drives, directories, and specific files for backing up. If you are limited on drive space, you need to carefully select those files that you would need if you had to reinstall everything, so that you don't eat up too much disk space. Files to be backed up are ANY file that is changed when you work with a specific program; usually called data files, but also includes .ini files, .cfg files, etc. TaskZip will compress the files into a .zip file to save space. Since I'm working with a 27 Gb hard drive, I have plenty of space, so just did it the lazy way and backed up the entire directories where the programs are located. Examples: CFTW (my genealogy program, with all my databases)-90 Mb for full weekly backups; 5 Mb for daily backup of only changed files. Eudora (my email program, along with all mailboxes and emails)-58 Mb for full weekly backups; 2 Mb for daily backup of only changed files. Webshots (my screen-saver program, along with all collections)-757 Mb for full weekly backups; don't do daily backups. Yes, 757 Mb is a lot, but I have literally 10's of thousands of saved downloaded pictures from Webshots. You can find TaskZip at: http://www.angelfire.com/wa/pbsystems/ Enjoy, SgtGeorge

How do you "use a text reader and look at the inside of the email without opening it, and see who sent it", George? Step by step, please! :o) -- Yours Aye - Murree. Scotland. **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** When I receive an email containing a virus and McAfee "catches" it, a box pops up asking me what I want to do with the email. I choose "move", which puts it in the default C:\Infected directory/folder. I can't remember what exact name McAfee gives it (it's been a long time since I received one), but looking in that directory/folder will show only two files: 1) Infected.log, 2) The "moved" email. Using NotePad, I just open that file and look at it. It looks very similar to viewing an email in an email program, except you see all the "ugly" stuff. You can look at the From:, X-Sender:, Reply-To:, and Received: headers and try to figure out who sent it. As I mentioned originally, if it concerns Melissa, ILoveYou, or other virus/trojan that "fakes" a From: address, there is NO way to find out the exact sender. You can narrow it down to which server was used by looking at the Received: header. It will contain a line like one of the following: 1) Received: from imo19.mx.aol.com (imo19.mx.aol.com [152.163.225.9]) 2) Received: by imo19.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v26.7.) id j.29.5374054 (3965) We can't tell from this who sent the email, but the folks at AOL, IF they would, could identify the person from the above. So, it really doesn't help us that much; however, once in a while you might get lucky and find a domain identified in those lines that gives you a clue to who might have your email address in his/her address book. Step by step, please! :o) -- Yours Aye - Murree. Scotland. (snip) **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Normally, you can't use a text reader to read an email that is in your email reader; however, when McAfee "saves" the infected email and "moves" it to the "Infected" directory, it puts it in "text" format. Then, you can read it just as you would any other text file. In Eudora, I can click on an email in the list of incoming, select "Save As" and save it as a .txt file. As a matter of fact, that's the way I clean out my email in Eudora from time to time, to keep active email at a minimum. I normally choose all the email in a Mailbox that concerns the same subject, say "KAK Worm", and save ALL them in a single .txt file, giving it an identifying name and date so I can open it later and find something I need to find. I would save the email from this List concerning KAK to a file "KAK Worm-051700.txt". It tells me the subject and the date. SgtGeorge

    3. Win98 Printing Tip - Seems to work better/best in Win98... PROBLEM: You print different types of documents from the same printer. Changing the printer settings each time you print, though, can be a hassle. SOLUTION: Set up multiple copies of your printer in the Windows Printers folder. First, open your Printers folder (Start, Settings, Printers) and double-click on the Add Printer icon. Use the Add Printer Wizard to create a copy of your printer, then right-click on the new printer, choose Rename, and apply a descriptive name such as Two-Sided Printing. Next, right-click on the new printer again and choose Properties. Set the various options, then click on OK. Repeat this process for each configuration. The next time you print, changing settings will be as easy as selecting the appropriate printer from the printer list.

    3. I finally had to download "The Cleaner" from: http://www.moosoft.com I installed it and tried it out. It works so well that I went ahead and registered it. One thing: It's kind of "pricey", at $29.95. That's a lot to pay for a program that finds only Trojans, but if the comparison chart on the web site is to be believed, it is worth it, since it catches virtually all known Trojans, while Norton, McAfee, and others, catch only a small portion of them. You can see the comparison chart at: http://www.moosoft.com/tc3vsav.html The Cleaner also has another application that one gets to use after registration, TCActive. Quote from another satisfied user: "TCActive! is a program that can catch trojans before they load and do any damage to your system. I highly recommend using it. It will not interfere with other programs at all. I would not feel safe on my computer without it running at all times!" It's memory resident and is supposed to catch Trojans before they can activate, even those that Norton and McAfee don't find. My problem is that I have so many resident applications like this, that when I start up Windows, my available Resources are way down. Most of these things I don't choose to automatically load with Windows, but put an entry into the Quick Launch bar at the bottom so I can start it if I feel it is needed. Enjoy, SgtGeorge George W. 1. [EUDORA] FREE "NoLoveBug" Program (Keeps VB from Running)
    2. George W. Durman
    3. NoLoveBug - A 4 Cow Anti-Virus Scanners Version: 1.05a License: Freeware Description: FREE program that stops script-type viruses like the "ILOVEYOU" and it's mutations from infecting computers running Microsoft 95/98/2000/NT. When a virus is opened in your email or anywhere on your computer this software stops it from running. The software turns off the ability of these viruses to run the VB scripting capabilities of Microsoft Windows. Full functionality can be re-enabled with a mouse click at any time. There is no need to update this software daily as it only works with VB Script- type Viruses. This does NOT replace anti-virus software. Used with anti-virus software, it provides an immediate relief to the many versions of the "ILOVEYOU" virus released every day. Most anti-virus software has to release new definition files daily to keep up with the variant strains of the virus to protect you. This software protects against ALL the variants as they come out, making it a faster way to protect against the viruses under different names. This works with your regular anti-virus software and does not replace it. The software has no expiration date. The software does ask 3 times over 90 days for a small donation. The software includes a complete restore or un-install function to restore your computer back to the way it was before you installed the software. NoLoveBug Software does not fix your computer if you have already run the virus. This software disables the scripting function in Windows 95/98/2000 to disallow these type of viruses from infecting. It does not work with the rest of the viruses such as .exe files or .bat files, only .VBS or VB Script files (VB stands for Visual Basic from Microsoft Corporation). http://www.tucows.com/virus95.html#lovebug95

    3. First, let me explain what is happening. When you view a message in Eudora, you are seeing "plain text". In the background, hidden, Eudora is using HTML. To see what I mean (if you're using Eudora), RIGHT-Click on this message. Click "View Source". NotePad (or whatever you've set as your default .txt viewer) will open and you'll see all the HTML. Now, when you highlight and copy something, say: 1. in Times New Roman 10 FOLLOWED BY TWO CARRIAGE RETURNS and that is showing up on your screen in Arial font, you don't "copy" the actual code that "tells" a program what the font should be. Looking at the "source", it looks like this: <FONT face=Arial>1. in Times New Roman 10 FOLLOWED BY TWO CARRIAGE RETURNS</FONT> When you paste the copied plain text into your word processor, it will show up in whatever font is set as default for that program. I frequently cut from a Eudora message and paste into Microsoft Word 97 SR-1 and/or Microsoft Excel 97 SR-1. Despite the fact that these two packages are set to work in Arial the pasted information appears 1. in Times New Roman 10 FOLLOWED BY TWO CARRIAGE RETURNS 2. IN HYPERLINK FORMAT (WHEN I COPY AN E-MAIL OR WEB PAGE ADDRESS) Try as I might, I am unable to get rid of the pasted hyperlink formats. No amount of highlighting and changing from any style format to any other format (Headings, plain text, default para text....) convinces Microsoft to stop insisting that this must remain a hyperlink. How do I make it submit to MY will? In Excell it does another thing: it spreads the cell into which I paste into many subsequent ones to the right. I can go into Eudora Edit/Text/Clear Formating - but each time is a pain. Eudora Light did not used to do this. What am I doing wrong? It's a DOS program that allows you to force Eudora to NOT show the "X-Sender" header in your outgoing email. It's a simple little program, doesn't work correctly all the time, and is aggravating; but, it works. SgtGeorge Yes, please do send it to me.. I may be slow, but eventually get there.. I have my own list and understand the need for complete honesty.. ginger **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** OK, I see you're using Eudora 4.3.1. If you checked EUDORA.INI and found this line: EditAllHeaders=1 Then you can go to work. If that line is NOT in EUDORA.INI, use a text editor, such as NotePad, and, under the [Settings] header, add that line. Click to compose a New Message, or reply to an original. In the From: line, delete whatever you have set as default, and just type in whatever you want there. Test it by sending a message to yourself. Send it, wait a couple of minutes, and download your waiting email. You should have one to you, from whatever address you typed in. Unless you also used Edit-X, if you "expand" the headers in the received email (by clicking on the "Blah-Blah-Blah" icon), you will see a header like this: X-sender: Which will contain your "real" address, as configured in Eudora. If you use Edit-X to prevent Eudora from adding the "X-sender" header, there will be no header in the test email that identifies you, except for the one that is used internally by @sat.net to identify you and the message ID. Such a header will contain something like this: <[email protected]> That would identify you to @sat.net, but no one else can find out who sent it. Hope this helps, SgtGeorge
