Keep them eyes peeled! (Yet another reason to find a "real" email program; as long as these dastardly virus and trojan writers continue to target Outlook and Outlook Express, you can give yourself more protection by switching to a "stand-alone" email program.) ************************* New, Nastier 'Love Bug' Virus Threatens Computers By Dan Lalor Reuters LONDON (May 19) - Software security firms warned computer users on Friday to guard against a new, more virulent strain of the "Love Bug" virus that swept the world earlier this month. Experts said several thousand computers were already infected by new e-mail virus, dubbed "Herbie: Love Bug II." It causes more severe damage than the original because it wipes files clean and tries to hide by changing its appearance. But there are hopes it may not spread as widely because companies have updated security since the first Love Bug. "Unfortunately, with destructive payloads inside this version, the stakes and costs are much higher than before," said Simon Perry, vice president of security solutions at U.S.-based Computer Associates. Perry said the virus renamed all files on a computer's local hard drive and associated network drives with a VBS (visual basic script) extension and set the file size to zero -- effectively making the computer system and network inoperable. Alan Stevens, head of digital services at Britain's Consumers Association, said the VBS extension was key to recognizing and destroying the virus. "You would not normally expect someone to send you an e-mail with a VBS extension. They are unusual, so they should be a dead giveaway to someone who knows what they are doing." NOT WIDESPREAD YET, BUT CAN MOVE FAST The Herbie virus, which targets users of Microsoft's Outlook program, arrives with "FW:" in the subject line. This is not that unusual in itself, signifying that the message has been forwarded from elsewhere. The VBS extension is contained in the body of the e-mail. Once opened, the virus will send itself to everyone in the recipient's Outlook address book, just as the Love Bug virus did, but the attached file name may change each time a new e-mail is sent. The Love Bug virus mainly carried the message: "I love you." Eric Chien, chief research manager for U.S. computer security firm Symantec Corp, said the new bug was "more nasty" than Love Bug because "it is highly polymorphic...it changes the way it looks every time." He rated its current spread as "medium" but gave it a "high" rating for its potential to replicate further. While some Symantec (Norton) clients in Europe and Israel had been affected, the main impact was on North American clients, Chien said, possibly because users were only just getting to their screens at the start of the European day. Raimund Genes, managing director of Trend Micro, a German messaging and Internet access provider, told Reuters from Berlin that while he had received no reports of the virus there, its impact would vary among computers because it was mutating. "Some computers will still work but send out the virus," he said, while others will become inoperable. BEST ADVICE: BEWARE VBS Computer users were advised to filter for e-mails with the word "FW" along with an attachment with a .VBS extension. Then, any e-mail attachments with a VBS extension should be treated with caution, Stevens at the Consumers Association said. "The normal rules apply. Make sure all files are backed up and be cautious with the unusual." Chien at Symantec said his company was having to write new code to send to clients, whereas the solution to Love Bug had been more of a ready-made "off-the-peg" job. The original "Love Bug" crippled computers worldwide, including at the U.S. Pentagon, and is estimated to have cost $7 billion in damage. A Philippine computer school dropout is under investigation for spreading the cyber-worm. (The original Herbie was a Volkswagen Beetle car in a series of "Love Bug" movies in the 1970s.) ************************* SgtGeorge SgtGeorge George W. Wanted to thank you for recommending Eudora. I installed it today and much prefer it to the Outlook Express I was using. Which by the way I was using when the kak worm came though on this list the other day. I tried Netscape also, which I liked less than Outlook. But think I am going to be very happy with Eudora. I am going to recommend it to my relatives. Thanks again. Carol Sue **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Hi Carol Sue. Thanks for trying Eudora. Not that I have any interest in it, other than being a long-time user, and thinking that users, who use the "default" Microsoft products because they were installed on their systems, should have other choices. There are several very good email programs, all of which are far superior to Outlook and Outlook Express; besides Eudora, there is Pegasus and Agent, just to name three. I manage 20 Mailing Lists at Rootsweb, plus subscribe to 2 or 3 dozen more (I've lost the exact count). Not all Listowners use Eudora, of course, but many, many do, and more are switching every day. When managing hundreds and hundreds of daily emails on our Mailing Lists, we need a program that offers the greatest versatility, is the easiest to use, offers a multitude of utilities to make List management easier, etc. Yes, MS Outlook and Outlook Express offers most of the features that Eudora does, but not to the depth and degree. When one works daily with dozens of Lists, one needs to be able to have multiple mailboxes and sub-mailboxes; one needs to have instantly available multiple "Signatures", multiple "Personalities", and multiple "Stationery" (form-letters or form-emails). Be sure to subscribe to the EUDORA-MAIL List (which I also manage) to keep up with the latest news. Eudora will handle multiple email accounts, from different servers, with ease. The ONLY fault I (and other users) have found is that it tends to be "resource-hungry" if one doesn't keep the number of emails in various mailboxes down to a low level. By this, I mean that if you keep hundreds of emails in your IN mailbox, every time you start Eudora, loading all those emails and making them instantly available, eats up Windows Resources. Any time you open a Mailbox and it contains hundreds of emails, that eats up more Resources. QualComm, the company that produces Eudora, has been working on this problem for some time, but, to date, hasn't been able to reduce the amount of Resources required to run Eudora. Of course, the current version, 4.3, is a heck of a lot better than past versions. There is a tradeoff when using different email programs. Do you want instant access to emails, or do you want to wait for the program to access the emails at the server? Instant access means that the emails must be on your system, and loaded when Eudora starts; being willing to wait means that the emails are NOT fully loaded when you start the program, and you must wait for the program to access them at the server (such as Agent does). Most of us prefer instant access, and only run into problems with System Resources when we also have many other things being loaded when Windows starts. The secret is to load as few things as possible when starting Windows. Gotta go. Don't forget I'm always available for discussion of Viruses or email programs, SgtGeorge

Helen Gant Donald **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Hi Helen. Yes, I posted it a while ago, and, many, like you, didn't know what a great program it is. For those of you who STILL don't know, ZoneAlarm is a completely FREE Personal Firewall!!!!! It has received a "5-Cow" rating from TUCOWS, and has received the highest praise at ZDNet, PCMagazine, etc. Basically, for those of you who are new to these Lists, a "Firewall" prevents others from "backing in" to your system when your modem is connected. It will not allow another server to access anything on your system, unless you authorize it. It will not allow another server to access your BIOS! In short, it erects a barrier between you and all those out there who would log on to your system to either gather data, or to secretly add things to your system. Just as a matter of information, I paid the fee for registering McAfee's "Personal Firewall" and used it for less than a day. I soon realized I had wasted $29.95. I just chalked it up as a bad choice, and went back to ZoneAlarm. The URL where you can download ZoneAlarm is: http://www.zonelabs.com Be sure to read all the testimonials for the program. Don't be surprised it this one becomes so popular that the company starts charging for it! Especially now that it includes the ability to block execution of email script attachments, something that the major Anti-Virus programs still don't do properly. Enjoy, SgtGeorge

If you're using an older version of Light, let me know and I'll send you the appropriate .PDF files so that you can read them and see the advantages to the newest version. As to McAfee vs. Clinic. Most of us have McAfee Scan installed on our computers. That means that we have to constantly download new DAT files to make sure that we are protected from the latest viruses/trojans/worms. The "Clinic" option at McAfee allows you to never have to download files again, and just use Clinic to scan your computer. I don't like that. It means I have to logon to the web site before I can scan my system. I feel that I no longer have any control over the programs on my system, and, instead, have to rely on a web site. There are other options at McAfee that make it a lot easier on the average "newbie", but they require that the "old" McAfee Scan be uninstalled from one's system before signing up for the new "way" of virus detection. Heck, I paid to upgrade to McAfee Scan 5.0, but when trying to install it, I was given the message that I had the "wrong" version of Windows 98!!!!! I then tried to uninstall McAfee 4.X and was given the same warning! So far, I have written 6 messages to McAfee, asking how I can correct this problem, and how I can uninstall 4.X and install 5.X. The ONLY reply I have received was one that said my credit card was being credited with the price of upgrading to 5.X. Yes, it showed up on my credit card bill, but I still don't know how to uninstall 4.X. They never sent another email in answer to any of my queries. So much for what was once the best AV program on the market. These new "whiz kids" get hired by corporations and immediately screw things up to the point that nothing works as it should. So, I'm sticking with McAfee 4.3 until they stop making new DAT files for it. Having paid the money for Clinic, I can say that it offers very little for the price. SgtGeorge

I was just "fortunate" enough to receive an email that contained the "HAPPY99" virus. So, I can show you what we were discussing about "viewing" an email that contains a "virus attachment". A user sent me an email, requesting to be added to a notification list that I maintain. McAfee notified me that the email contained the "HAPPY99" virus.
