    1. [EUDORA] Software That Comes Packaged with Your Computer

George has touched on it...but most of the time these programs that "come as a package" even with Eudora....are either outdated, or only watered down versions. I never use these programs...always buy the full boxed program. Costs more, but you'll never be sorry! Mari (snip) **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Once again, Mari is right on target. Such programs are called OEM programs and are almost never supported by the companies that make them. Want to hear a good one? Windows 98 SE was installed on this Gateway when I bought it. When I had the problem with "defrag", I first contacted Microsoft. I was politely informed that the Windows version I had was OEM and that I would have to work with Gateway to solve any problems. OEM products are very rarely supported by the producers. Microsoft will only help you if you BUY the product outright! Same thing with Office 2000 or any other software installed by the computer seller. The companies get these software programs dirt cheap and the producers are not about to give you customer support or technical support. If you "buy" Office 2000 for the $300 or $400 or whatever it costs, then they will support you. If you have the OEM version, for which Gateway probably paid $10.00, forget it! SgtGeorge

Durman wrote: Final opinion: (snip) 3) Norton causes conflicts on many systems when using Windows; (snip) SgtGeorge Ummmm....but my Norton doesn't conflict?! Course, I have Windows 98.... Mari **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Notice I said "many", not "all". (GRIN) I know users who have NEVER had a conflict between Norton and Windows; on the other hand, I know many whose systems just wouldn't work properly with Norton installed. And, it's not just Norton; another program that causes lots of headaches for many users is "Nuts & Bolts". There are several of these "Jack of all trades" utilities, that, if allowed to load into memory when Windows starts, cause all kinds of conflicts, with video cards, sound cards, etc. There are no hard and fast rules. What works for one person may not work for another. While we're on it, let me give you an example of a tiny utility that I installed for Windows - "TClock Ex". If you look down in the corner , you will see a "clock" that shows you the time; passing the mouse cursor over it pops up the day and date. Well, I installed TClock and it was just what I needed to see the day, date, AND time all at once, neon green letters on a black background. Takes up very little memory or Resources. But, for many weeks I couldn't do a "defrag" because the system kept "changing" files (writing to the hard drive) while defrag was trying to run. Anyway, I finally figured out by process of elimination that TClock was the culprit. I don't know WHY, but it evidently writes to the hard drive, almost constantly. When I exited from it, defrag worked fine! Just another one of those things that give us headaches. One other I found that interfered with "defrag" was the Microsoft "Critical Update" thingy that you can download from the Windows Update pages. If you install it, it is put into your Task Scheduler, and (I think) the default is that it checks your system every 5 minutes. Anyway, with it in the Task Scheduler, defrag would run for 5 minutes, then start over when Critical Update "checked" the system. I had to phone Gateway and talk to a technician to find out that Critical Update was causing the problem. I just un-installed it, long ago. Conclusion? The latest versions of Norton's AV program, disk utilities, "tool boxes", etc., may not be the bugaboos they once were. This is a distinct possibility, since it would be logical for them to correct the earlier "conflict" bugs/glitches. When it gets down to the "nitty gritty", the only thing you can do is "try it out". If it causes problems with your particular computer and setup, then you will either have to uninstall it, or contact the tech reps to find out how to overcome the problems. Sometimes the tech reps for the software can help; sometimes the tech reps for your computer system can help. In my case, I have learned to call Gateway if I have problems. (Bought this system last August.) Every person there I have talked to knows hardware AND software in detail - very knowledgeable customer support reps. This is getting long, but just thought of a couple of other things that can go wrong, things that you MIGHT blame on installing new software. 1) Shortly after getting this system, I lost ALL sound! Everything was checked and double-checked. NO SOUND! The sound card was installed properly; the proper drivers were loading with Windows; they were the latest drivers. NO ONE could help! Then, one day I just happened to open Creative Launcher (the control panel for my sound system). I looked around through it and guess what! There's a place to check to enable sound or to disable it!!!!! Somehow, Windows had unchecked the "enable sound"! Windows could have done it on its own, or, as I really suspect, some sound program I installed turned it off for some reason. 2) A colleague at work lost all his sound a couple of weeks ago. When he asked me what could cause that, I didn't remember the same problem I had experienced! (Memory is going.) Anyway, he took the system to the store where purchased it and was charged $108.00 for the diagnostics. Again, guess what! Same thing! His sound was disabled! So, we may think we know what is causing problems, but we might be wrong. I use Paint Shop Pro (PSP) and have had a problem with it for several weeks now. When I scan a black and white document, PSP shows the document with black text, but with a GREEN background, instead of WHITE. I'm still working on this one. SgtGeorge

I had lost some Windows files and corrupted others.. I did install McAfee 3.1.1....... I shut down this am for something and it took 20 minutes to come up after the reboot... The last time I installed McAfee 3.1.1 on my puter was when I got it home brand new... I've always used McAfee. The only difference is my new puter is an AMD Athlon. So, is there a problem with McAfee and this new unit. I uninstalled 3.1.1 and rebooted.. It came right up.. just as it should have before. Is it something I'm doing or is my puter going to cause me an early death.. :-) HELP..................LOL ginger **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** McAfee 3.1.1 shouldn't cause any problems with bootup time; however, I don't know if there are any conflicts with AMD Athlon. It could be that when you installed 3.1.1, it assumed default configuration and is checking out your entire system for viruses every time you reboot! If that's the case, you can reinstall it, re-configure it so that it does NOT do a virus check at system bootup or Windows start. That is one of the options of McAfee. SgtGeorge

    3. I received a message from a "support" address where I had asked for help with a product. I hit "reply" and composed my email, but it wouldn't send. I got "Eudora not responding" and had to shut down Eudora and start over. I did this 4 times, each time that message would not go. I sent one to my daughter (a reply, also) during that time and it went right through. But when I tried the "bad" one again, I got the same "not responding" message. I did my reply, copied it onto a new message and sent it. Then just to see, I clicked on the reply again, and once more had to shut down Eudora. Any idea at all what might have caused that? I'm using Pro 3.0.1. Sylvia

It is all in keeping your computer clean, and setup right. To set a new program as your *.txt program, start Explorer and go to the View menu item. Left click. On the drop down menu, select folder options. On the new window, select file types. Look for the text document type, and highlight it. That will show what opens that type of file. Read help on this window, and see the different ways you can change this selection. The way I do so, is select remove, and then try to open a *.txt file and when it asks what do you want to open it with, I tell it the executable file that I wish to use. I frequently use some freeware notepad type file that allows you to do many more things than Notepad. Like spell check. Jack

If you are using a parallel port scanner, and any HP printer, you are in for a hard time. Most of the newer HP printers, (still my favorite), use the high speed connections between the computer and the printer. If the bios is set properly for the printer, you may not ever get a scanner older than a year old to work with a newer HP printer. The fix is simple, get a second parallel port, there are several out there that ties to your pci buss, and have software to install it. These are very good for use with scanners. If you also have a parallel port, Zip drive, get it its own parallel port, as it will not share with about anything. Jack

The problems we had most were due to people running two or more at same time, then doing lots of program changes. We did find some problems with McAfee and Norton, on the same machine one after the other even if you un installed the first one before you installed the second. Try it, and see. You can use regedit and find the left overs from these two in the register usually. Learn to use msconfig to cause things to not load at startup also. Jack

Nothing else was different, except the WIN 98 and perhaps the programs installed in a different order than on W95. Problems! Every time I'd try to use the scanner, it folded on me. Couldn't get it to work to save me. Finally discovered the whole problem came down to loading. If something else loaded and used a file that the scanner used (please don't ask me which file....it's vaporized <g>) then the scanner balked. In other words, what it boiled down to is that the scanner was sharing a file that something else was... and if the Windows loaded the scanner first, then it was fine. BUT...if it loaded something else that used a file that the scanner used...well the scanner just sat there...all I got when I tried scanning was the software interface! The scanner went through the motions, but wouldn't actually scan. Instead of the thing I was scanning, I'd get the scanner software program interface! I know this isn't exactly what you are relating, but it could be that they are battling for the same file. >Any suggestions... This harddrive was reformatted yesterday..
