Since we have the new puter we had built, the paperport program will no longer work with my unit. It appears it is outdated now. So, we had to download DeskScan II from HP's site. For most uses PSP is the best, but for fast service, easy slide shows and just a good all around viewer which will view just about any format of a graphics file, go to: http://www.hamrick.com/ And look at ViewPrint Pro 32. It has been around for a long time and is about $40 I believe. They also have a program called VueScan which will work with most scanners. Look at their on line manual for both to see what they do. They take up very little disk space, and are good to use on notebooks and such where there is usually a lack of disk space. Jack

At my last career, we used a fair amount of scanners, and found that anything under about $5000 was good for about 2 or 3 thousand scans at best unless you had a very good repair department. The mechanical parts wear out fairly soon. Four years is like two decades in a human life for a scanner. The technology is changing so fast, that the newer programs just do not like to deal with old technology. In the computer area, a computer is judged a throw away at about three years, a scanner used a lot about two to three years, printers about two years. Mostly do to the advances in technology that allows the programmers and computer makers to add speed and power. This obsoletes equipment built with old technology very fast. My last career was in High Energy Physics, and we had new technology changes weekly at times, and was very hard to keep up. Jack
Be aware, that I will be missing a lot for the next two weeks, I will try to answer some questions if I get home before midnight. I am rebuilding a house, and care giving at present, and trying to be too many places at the same time. I sometimes space out for a day or so, trying to keep it all together. I thought after 21 years with the Navy, 19 with the state of California in the UC university area, that I should be able to take it easy for a few years, but fate has stepped in, and changed all the wife's and my plans. I am going to be 65 in three months, and would like to do what I want to do sometime soon. I like to help people, but other duties provail. Jack

And with Win95 the use of the config.sys and autoexec.bat files to load drivers and batch files can work around several problems. Some of the changes to Win95 make this hard however. In Win98 it is a lot harder to work around in this manner. Do able frequently, but a person has to have the computer in hand to see what can be done. This kind of problem is hard to work on at a distance. Jack

You have probably installed the item twice, I have one in there four times. I still have not figured out how. I will go to the registry some time if I keep this system running very much longer, and find the duplicate entries and remove them. As long as they are unchecked, they will not load. If you need it, check one, and un check the second. If you un check something that is needed, it will tell you by not allowing some action to take place. You go into msconfig the second time and just recheck that item. For my All-in-One, scanner, printer, duplicator, I leave the automatic startup for scanning unchecked, until I need the scanner, then I recheck, restart, and use the scanner. This leaves the drivers where I need them on the machine, and can be controlled easly. >I know, I know.. probably way too general... Not really, there is no general items where computers go. Even if two computers have the same parts, by type, version, and close serial numbers for every part within, they will work different. Once you start loading Operating Systems and such it just gets worse. The problem with the OS's is not all users want the same things, so using the install program, will just install the parts they want. Second problem, MS will not take your word on some of the things, and even though you tell it to not load it, they will, because it will give them money if you use the item. They hope you will give in and use their version or program. E-mail program being a big example. Just try to get rid of Network Neighborhood unless you use some of the programmer programs. Jack

I use WebFerret and Copernic to do my basic searches. If you pay for Copernic it is one of the most powerful searching programs out there. Both of these can call home on you however if not set up correctly. If you end up getting a new scanner, think very hard about getting a USB or SCSI scanner for the new one if you computer has the proper ports. A better way, is to do a net scan using something like Web Ferret or Copernic to find sites with data to help. On printers, for HP, I am not sure just now where it is, but on the HP site for the scanners, look for faq's, and technical papers. I seem to remember there was a couple of good ones talking about the problem. The scanners have always been touchy. In many cases, it is best to buy Paint Shop Pro, an evaluation is at http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp and just install the Twain drivers for the scanner, and using the twain import function of PSP, to run the scanner. Some tweeking has to be done, but works. If you have a USB port or two, assuming your computer is new enough, and powerful enough, there are good adapters to plug into the USB, which will give you new, or more Parallel, Serial, NIC and other ports, just according to what you need and how much you want to pay. This is a good time for my standard rant on programs that phone home. Copernic is good, but can phone home, if you do not set it up right. Use Zone Alarm, and you can almost stop it with ZA alone.
