    3. Ginger, taking them in order, here are my suggestions: 1) VShield needs to load; 2) Virus Scan Scheduler needs to load; 3) Sound needs to load, IF you actually use the utility to make changes to your sound settings often. If not, I wouldn't have it automatically load. I just made an icon for it, and pull it up whenever I need it. 4) Don't know what exactly is loaded for Norton Utilities. If it's just a menu type of thing, same as 3) above. 5) Do you use ATI to make changes often? If not, you can always make icons for all the utilities available and load them when you need them. 6) MSN Messenger! Do you use it? Either if you do or don't, it is using memory AND Resources. I have all such utilities/programs available via icons, and only have to open them when actually using them. Same for AIM, FireTalk, GKU Messenger, Microsoft Chat, Net2Phone, MyFreeLD, NetMeeting, etc. There's no need to have those things loaded when you probably don't use them 99+% of the time. 7) ZoneAlarm definitely needs to be loaded. (Note about the above: I said you could make icons to pull up these programs/utilities when needed, but a much better way to access them, if you're using Win98, is to add them to the Quick Launch bar at the bottom of your Desktop. You can add items there by using Explorer (WinKey+E) and navigation to: C:\WINDOWS\APPLICANTION DATA\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\QUICK LAUNCH That's the folder where you can add, or remove, things that you need to have available when you're in some other program, such as Eudora. And, you can have as many as you want. You don't have to have the entire Tray bar filled up with these icons -- just grab the right edge of the Quick Launch box by putting the icon cursor on it, left clicking, and dragging as far to the left as it will go. You'll end up with only 5 icons showing, but there will be a >> that you can click to show the rest. Very, Very handy. Lets you see thumbnails of all the graphics files on your system, AND you can configure the size of the viewed thumbnails. The smaller they are, the more you see per page. Double clicking one automatically opens it in the main PSP viewer. Here's a recent tip from TipWorld on PSP: ----------------------- OPENING MULTIPLE IMAGES To open more than one image from the Paint Shop Pro browser window, hold down the Shift key while clicking the images you want to open. Here's another neat trick: From the Paint Shop Pro browser window, you can browse your Internet cache and clear out all of those unwanted pictures. To do this, go to the File menu in Paint Shop Pro and click on Browse. A browser window will open in the last directory that you opened. In the right window, navigate to the Temporary Internet Files folder by double-clicking on the C: drive. Now scroll down and double-click on your Windows folder, then double-click on the Temporary Internet Files folder. If you've never looked at what your computer grabs while you're surfing, you're in for a big surprise. You can hold down the Shift key and select the pictures you want to delete. Finally, right-click and choose Delete. ----------------------- (Note about the above: After I installed MSIE 5.5, it changed the directory for the temporary internet files. They were at C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. They are now at C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES.) Don't ask me WHY MS, in all its wisdom, had to make this change! I had to make several changes in settings in various programs/utilities/applications because of this. SgtGeorge

So, I just added them in the right place in the Scheduler. Open McAfee VirusScan Scheduler. (It should be a Tray Icon at the bottom right of your desktop. Double-click it.) Look for an entry, "Scan My Computer" or "Default Scan" or however you set it up. Right-click the entry and choose "Properties", or just Double-click the entry. 3. Ginger, I have no opinion on either HP or Epson scanners. My only question would be if the "dpi" scanning rate is a "true" rate, or interpolated. I have a very, very cheap scanner that was advertised as capable of 1440 dpi, but it will only do 720 dpi "real" scanning. The rest is "interpolated", but it still comes out fantastic. I'm sure there are users here who have used these scanners and can give you some clues. As to your resources being low, well..... as long as there are thousands of emails in the mailboxes, Eudora does "suck up" Resources. I'm in the process (again) of saving hundreds of emails to .txt files, so I can clean up, and even delete some mailboxes. It's very tempting to create folders and mailboxes for every subject, no matter how trivial. Just remember, the more folders, mailboxes, and emails Eudora has to load, the more Resources are used. 3. I have a question about downloading attachments. I have Eudora Light. When I receive an email with an attachment at the bottom of the email, where does the attachment go if I don't open it? I found several attachments under C drive, program files, Internet toolkit and download. Sometimes it is a star, banner, pictures, and other things. I don't open attachments unless it is from someone I know and expecting it. Is there some way to keep them from going into these files? I'm really not sure I have explained this very well. Will this do any harm to the computer if I don't remove them or just take up space? Candace

The thing about scanners is what is the final use you plan to use the scanned item for. Most modern scanners do a very good job for very little money. Here is the rub as I see it. 1. Photo work, for future printing of pix onto fine paper, scan at the maximum rate you can, using only optical dpi not interpolated dpi. Photoshop and PSP will interpolate very well if you need a larger file to print large prints. 2. Photo's to be used in web sites, and of no use long term. Scan at about 150 dpi only, just in case you want to make a small print. The web sites do very well at 72 dpi scan. 3. Documents that are only text, and line drawing, 150 dpi works well. For either printing or web site use. 4. Documents with seals and other graphics, best optical dpi you have. Some times there are letters or diagrams in the seal that you might want to read later. Second item. Wondering why several of you are having low resources with several mailboxes open. I leave three open with a total of over 3500 notes, to add to that, I have over 100 mailboxes in total, with over 6000 notes, to make it faster to cross check, without any problem with resources. I do have 128meg of ram, but that is the only thing that may be larger than most use. Jack
