No, please keep the class going as is. To someone that is new, I'm learning everyday. I appreciate when you tell the steps on how to do something or locate it on the computer, even if I'm not having that problem. I try to go through the steps and see exactly what you all are discussing. There is always someone to help and that is nice, too. You don't talk down to us new computer users but try to explain the answer to the problems. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. TIPS AND TRICKS Fast Way to Exit DOS After you restart your computer in MS-DOS mode, there is a quicker way than typing "Exit" and having the whole computer restart in order to return to Windows. Just type "Win"; this will bring you right to Windows without restarting the computer. If DOS tells you that Windows is running a DOS program, type Exit and your computer will not restart but bring you right back into Windows. SgtGeorge
Microsoft "IP Fragment Reassembly" Vulnerability Patch Microsoft has released a patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in Windows 95/98/NT/2000. The vulnerability could be used to cause an affected machine to temporarily stop performing useful work. The affected systems contain a flaw in the code that performs IP fragment reassembly. If a continuous stream of fragmented IP datagrams with a particular malformation were sent to an affected machine, it could be made to devote most or all of its CPU availability to processing them. The data rate needed to completely deny service varies depending on the machine and network conditions, but in most cases even relatively moderate rates would suffice. The vulnerability would not allow a malicious user to compromise data on the machine or usurp administrative control over it. Although it has been reported that the attack in some cases will cause an affected machine to crash, affected machines in all Microsoft testing returned to normal service shortly after the fragments stopped arriving. Machines protected by a proxy server or a firewall that drops fragmented packets would not be affected by this vulnerability. The machines most likely to be affected by this vulnerability would be machines located on the edge of a network such as web servers or proxy servers. You can get it at: http://update.winfiles.com/cgi-bin2/flo?x=dAohAYuguuwgKAuuo Or, if you're using Win98, just use the Windows Update in the Start Menu. SgtGeorge
If you use WS_FTP Pro, thought you might be interested in knowing that version 6.5 has been released. For those of you who are not web site owners, it might also interest you to know that WS_FTP Pro is the co-favorite for uploading files to web sites, the other being CuteFTP, although I think WS_FTP Pro has edged ahead in the past few months. If you were using the 6.5 Beta, be sure to read ALL the instructions before downloading and installing. Here's the blurb from WinFile.com: WS_FTP Pro 6.5 - Demo: $40.00 - 2.2 Mb WS_FTP Pro is the fastest, most powerful Windows file transfer client available. With WS_FTP Pro, you can connect to any FTP server, browse through directories and files, and transfer files in either direction. WS_FTP Pro's Windows Explorer Interface lets you copy and move files within the familiar Windows Explorer, using the same reliable "core engine" as the classic WS_FTP interface. Features include session profile support for connecting to frequently accessed FTP site; remote to remote file transfer; advanced support for handling timeouts, port numbers, passive file transfers, and firewalls; convenient drag-and-drop capabilities to simplify and speed-up your file transfer tasks, and more. Transfer files easily with WS_FTP Pro 6.5. SgtGeorge
FBI warns of new Outlook computer virus A new computer virus dubbed "Killer Resume" is spreading through email systems using the Microsoft Outlook program, the FBI said. Anti-virus companies reported late Friday that several corporate email systems had already been infected, and some shut down, the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center said. The virus, similar in makeup to the notorious Melissa virus, is carried in a file attached to an email with the subject "Resume - Janet Simons." The attachment is a Microsoft Word file called "EXPLORER.DOC" or "RESUME.DOC," according to an alert posted on the Web site of computer security company Network Associates. Network Associates as of Saturday morning classified the virus as "medium on watch," according to the company's Web site. If a computer user opens the attachment, the virus will spread itself by sending an email to everyone in the user's email address book, the company said. When the user closes the Word document, the virus will then delete important files on the user's computer. The FBI advised computer users not to open any email with this subject line, to deactivate the executive summary feature in Microsoft Outlook, and then delete the email without opening it. (To read about this new virus, use this URL:) http://update.winfiles.com/cgi-bin2/flo?x=dAohAYuguuwBoYBuh Again, it looks like it's designed specifically for MS Outlook users. Time to move to Eudora! At 10:08 PM 05/30/2000, Mike & Ginger Woodcock wrote: *************START OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************* ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use the "uninstall" for removing any programs from your computer. For most, you can go to Start, Programs, find the program, and select the "Uninstall" provided by the program. Even then, more than likely, it will not remove ALL the files it installed, nor remove ALL the Registry entries it made. The ONLY sure way to uninstall successfully is to use a third-party utility that makes a log file of EVERY action during installation. It will show every file installed, every file that was replaced, and every Registry entry. Yes, it's time consuming and aggravating to have to go to these lengths when uninstalling something; but, that's the ONLY way you will get your system back to the way it was before the installation. On the same note, a few days ago, I used the utility in McAfee Clinic, Performance Optimizer, and it found dozens and dozens of entries in the Registry that had not been removed during "proper" un-installation. It looked for entries that pointed to files that no longer existed, since they had been un-installed. The entries were still there in the Registry, having to be loaded each time Windows started. Now THAT can cause conflicts. SgtGeorge Ok, If I bought the program locally, could I go to the site and use the Optimizer??? And IF I can and find all these straglers, what can I do about them..
