Mari Ok, here we go again with the Aureate thing.. I don't quite understand it.. but this catches my eye and I want to understand ALL about it now.. you see I use CuteFTP..... g **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** For those that missed the first go round about Aureate, here it is briefly. Aureate is a company that gathers computer user information and evidently sells it to companies to help them target potential customers of their products. To help gather the information, Aureate made a program that, when installed, secretly gathers information from a user's computer system. Then, at various times, while the user's modem is connected to the Internet, the Aureate program sends this information back to the Aureate server, all secretly, and unseen by the user. Here's the rub. Aureate made deals with hundreds of software producers to include the Aureate program in the installation programs of the other software producers. So, when you install, as an example, CuteFTP, the Aureate program is ALSO installed, but you don't know it, because it is "stealthed", that is, hidden from view. According to Aureate, they collect no PERSONAL information, such as name, email address, or other data; but, they DO collect demographic data on sites the user has visited, how often, etc., plus what kinds of items the user has purchased over the Web/Net. Getting rid of Aureate is very easy - just download and install OptOut. It will remove all Aureate files from the system. SgtGeorge

Yes, CuteFTP IS one of the programs that secretly installs Aureate, but so are so many other major, and very valuable, programs. One of my favorites is Copernic, a desktop search engine, and IT installs Aureate. I put up with it anyway, because after installing upgrades, I just run OptOut again and remove all the danged Aureate files. There are three programs that load when the bios loads. They control the input/output, control of who gets the CPU etc. Each has its own part of the first megabyte of memory to use in the computer. These are the resource stacks. They are limited in size, so we have the overflow of stack problem. Go to My Computer, and right click the icon. Under the menu, you will will see an item called System Information. If it is not there, you are probably in W95 and did not tell it to load. It is in the normal installation for W98. Left click, and open the window. Choose the Memory tab, and you will see the stacks. It shows which part of memory is used by each program. The stacks however is not all that is shown. Your programs such as Eudora will also show. It has a graphic, which shows memory usage. You will discover you have more Windows memory than Physical memory. This has to do with disk swapping. The other tabs let you look at the other things going on at the time. >I haven't a clue if I'm letting windows control my swap disk.. There are as many ways to do this swapping as there are users, so I will not go into the way to use it here. If I get time I will try to find some web sites which discuss this. It is very involved, but you can speed up your work and save some resources at times by controlling the swap yourself. If you do it wrong however you will kill the computer, causing you to do a clean install again, starting at fdisk. When in areas like this, if you do not want any thing to change by accident, cancel yourself out of the windows, by just selecting cancel. >When working I almost always have Eudora opened monitoring my mail every >10 minutes, Netscape, IE, HTML Notepad, Cute FTP, PSP6, MSM, ...
