A few days ago, I received an email with the Subject: Re: unsubscribe, and only one word in the body, "unsubscribe". The sender did not indicate from which List he wished to be unsubscribed. I searched through the user lists for the 21 Lists I manage and couldn't find his address. So, I replied to him, asking for clarification. (The "unsubscribe" email came to me privately, not through Rootsweb.) Today I received a reply from him explaining what had happened. I still don't know how the "FormMail Threat" works, but somehow it can "spoof" email addresses. Heaven knows why anyone would want to spoof an unsubscribe email! It's not clear if the email I received was generated as a result of someone scanning my website at Rootsweb or the website of the person whose address was "spoofed". If anyone knows anything about this, please reply here for benefit of us all. Below is an extract of the pertinent part of the email I received. SgtGeorge ============================================ ,,,,,,,,,, New Threat #1 Reader Mort Goldberg sent me a "heads up" note about two new threats, one of primary interest to people with their own web sites, and one that potentially affects us all. First, here's the one that affects site owners: 1) Formmail Vulnerability During the past few weeks, there has been a flood of spam being relayed through innocent third-party webservers all over the world. The problem turns out to be a security hole in the widely used Matt Wright formmail.pl PERL Script. Briefly, spammers have discovered that the unmodified script is vulnerable to spoofing of the HTTP_REFERER value. The effect of this hack is to turn the script into an anonymizing open relay. Apparently, some script kiddie has even come up with a program to rapidly scan websites and pinpoint those with vulnerable formmail scripts. ... It is possible to patch the formmail script, and I have heard from a couple of webmasters fluent in PERL who have done so. However, according to well-known anti-spammer and UNIX expert [and LangaList reader] Suresh Ramasubramanian the best course of action is to abandon formmail entirely and change to an alternative. (His exact words "Ditch formmail.pl - even if you patch it it won't work too well and there are other holes.") There are at least three alternatives of which Suresh is aware. One of these, available at http://www.bignosebird.com/, is, according to Suresh, also very easy to hack. He likes a second one, available at http://www.extropia.com/freedownloads.html (also called "Selena Sol") a little better. But his best recommendation is the "mailer" script available at http://www.geekgiveaways.com/code/ . I have looked over the documentation at http://www.geekgiveaways.com/code/mailer.html , and from what little I know, it *does* seem to be designed from the git-go to be far more resistant to hacking than formmail. However, it also appears to be considerably more trouble than formmail to set up. Definitely not for newbies.

Hi everyone, Thought I'd let you know of a good spam filter that I came across reading a magazine. These filters will tell Eudora two things, the first, that any email that comes with your email address in the TO: is to stay in your Inbox and the second is, that any email that does not have your address in the TO: is to be sent to a special folder. And since these filters will be at the bottom of your filter list, this will only apply to any mail that is left over after all your other filters have been applied. It's a several step process but I'll talk you through them <g>. First Step: The Address Book (a) Open you Address book (b) Click New address (make sure this is under your main Nickname address book if you have several) (c) On the "Personal" tab, in the Nickname field put "Me" (without quotes). (d) In the Full name tag, I put "Myself" (again without the quotes). (e) In the field "Nickname will expand", put all the email addresses you download mail from through Eudora, one each on a line. (I have four addresses I download mail from, so all four went in there.) (f) Save your Address Book. Second Step: Make a new Mailbox and call it "Possible Spam" or just "Spam" Third Step: The Filters First Filter: (a) Open up your filters (b) Click the New button (c) Set up your filter like this: Check Incoming In the Header: choose <Any Recipient>, then choose "intersect nickname", in the next field type the name you gave yourself in your address book. Since I choose "Me" that's what I typed (again without quotes). Then choose "Ignore" In the Action section, just choose "Skip Rest". Now drag this filter to the bottom of your filters. (This filter says "If it's address to me in the TO: leave in the Inbox) Second Filter: (a) Click the New Button (b) Set up your filter like this: Check Incoming In the Header: choose <Any Header>, then choose "contains", leave all the rest of this section blank. Now go down to the Action Section: Transfer To: Possible Spam Server Options: Delete Make Status: Read Skip Rest Now drag this filter to the very bottom of your filters. (This filter transfers everything else left over to your "Possible Spam" mailbox) Make sure if you ever add any other filters, that these two always stay at the bottom. And I choose to have the last filter change the status to read because I can't stand seeing unread messages in any of my mailboxes. I just check that mailbox about once a day and delete the real spam and transfer what got sent there by accident to where it belongs. You should end up with less spam in your inbox that you have to deal with. If you have any questions, just let me know. Debbie Woolard - List Manager djwoolard@earthlink.net

That did the trick! I always unchecked and checked it again BEFORE I restarted the computer. As soon as I left it unchecked and restarted the computer and then rechecked it, it worked! There should be absolutely no conflicts or problems in Eudora when you change to a DSL or cable hookup. All I had to do when I had a cable modem installed was to go Tools:Options:Internet Dialup and uncheck all boxes. You WILL have to reconfigure several places to change your old email address and server to the new one. Dean, what you are describing is the utility in Eudora called "ESP Groups". The best way to find out how to set it up and use it is to open the Eudora User Manual and look down the left side for "Using Eudora Sharing Protocol". There you will find complete instructions for its use. Or, you can click on "Help", then "Topics" in the Eudora program itself. Go to "Find" and type in "ESP". You will see several subjects there which will explain ESP. Alan, yes this List is about Eudora; however, for all the years I managed the List, I allowed "off-topic" posts on special holidays, and even posted some myself. I hope it's not too much of a bother to you to see such things as a few posts honoring our veterans on Memorial Day. If it IS a bother, you can always hit the delete key. Folks, I am no longer the administrator for this List, but do want to apologize for Stefan Probst's posts. I posted my contribution in an effort to honor our veterans for their service and sacrifices. Stefan is a German living in Hanoi, Vietnam. That should be enough to explain his obvious dislike for America. Anyone can search through history and find things that do not put a country in its best light. Just as there is no perfect person, there is no perfect country. To deliberately set out to embarrass, condemn, and denigrate our great country is despicable. In my opinion, if Stefan Probst hates our country so much, I truly hope he stays up there with his Communist friends and never visits our shores. I apologize to Debbie, the new List Administrator, for replying here. I had already replied privately to Stefan, but it seems he has an ax to grind with America, and has chosen the EUDORA-MAIL List as the place to spout his venom.
