    3. Just came in on the tail end of the discussion on the family in Iowa. My branch settled in Marion County. Robert Etherington, born in KY about 1810 and died in Pella, Marion Co, IA 8 Aug 1875. He was married to Ruth (Jane) (I think maiden name Johnson - I can't look right now without locking up my computer). They had 9 children - Sarah Frances, Catharine, John W., and Philip were born in Indiana; Isaac, Robert Johnson, Mary J., Rebecca Ellen, and Margaret Ellen were born in Marion Co, IA. If anyone ties into this particular line I will be glad to share what little info I have. Jeri Corbitt

I have been considering trying the 1900 census to find the family. If you are interested in descendants, though, I could send you some of that information. Also, there is an obituary for one of the brothers out there on the internet. That is where I got the names John and Mary Etherington. Sorry I don't have more.

They have certainly spread out since but there is much information to be found at http://www.ethington.org That site is maintained by Harold D. 1. FW: [MO] Ethington's in Dekalb and Daviess county, Mo.
    2. The Cook's
    3. Crofton, (dekalb and daviess counties, Missouri) August 17, 1871, the new station on the Chicago & Southwestern Railroad, halfway between Gallatin on the northeast and Cameron on the southwest, was given for a short time the name of Crofton. This...prairie was said to be the highest point of land in the county, and was owned by Mrs. Susan Ethington, Frederic Croft, and others. The owners donated a large portion of the town site to the railroad company, both for railroad and town purposes. The railroad company, in turn, conveyed to a few persons interested, at Gallatin, who formed what was known at the time as the "Gallatin Company." They pushed the sale of the lots and the town, under their charge, began to grow and was called "Winston". In February 1872, a post-office was established at Winston and F. B. H. Brown was the first regularly appointed postmaster...The first railroad station agent was T. J. Jefferson...Joseph Swike opened the first store in November, 1871, dealing in general merchandise...Mr. Brown remained postmaster from February, 1872, until December, 1872, when he was succeeded by Joseph Swike...The name of the office is Emporia... On November 23rd, 1876, the town of Winston was incorporated. (--Daviess County, pp. 695, 696.) See Winston. http://198.209.8.166/moser/daviesspl.html Good Morning, the above refers to a Mrs. Susan ETHINGTON. As some of you may remember my gGrandmother, Olive Susan, was the daughter of Scott S. ETHINGTON and Elizabeth Jane CARTER of Fountain Co., Indiana. Scott was the son of John ETHINGTON and Susannah SHERRILL. His brother was James ETHINGTON. I have found a marriage that took place in Daviess County, Mo. 17Dec1890 between James ETHINGTON and Mrs. Fannie A. CARTER but this would not be a first marriage for James. He was born in early 1830's if this is even the same James Ethington. My James Ethington married Armilda (some say Waitt and others Howard) and had a son John Henry Ethington. James is buried, having died May 1904 in Ladue, Henry Co., Mo. He served Illinois Co. D 1st Art. From the 1870 Colfax Township, (is that Daviess or Dekalb Co.) Mo. Ethington, James 35 Farmer Indiana , Susan 53 North Carolina (this is most likely mother, Susannah Sherrill, although she previously was thought to have died and been buried in Fountain Co., Ind.) , Elzada 22 Ind. (Scott and James sister, Married Addiz Beer in Daviess Co.) , Odday 21 Work on farm Ill. (this is prob. Addiz, brother Samuel Beer married Ethington sister, Martha.) 1870 Census Grand River Township, De Kalb County, Mo. Ethington, Scott 34 Farmer Indiana , Lizzie 30 Ind. , Susan 6 Ill. (probably Iroquois Co. where the Sherrill family settled) , Laura 4 Mo. , Elizabeth (anna) 9/12 Carpenter, Henry 19 Farm Labor Ind. (Henry Carpenter was the son of Scott Sister, Mary; she married Martin Carpenter) Later (1879) a daughter, Sarah J. was born in Mo. and in 1879, William "Willie" S. Ethington was b. in Atchison County, Kansas. Both Lizzie and Scott are buried in Wilson County, Kansas; Scott was a Civil War Veteran having served the Union in the 9th Inf. "Warren's Guards" Indiana. So you can probably understand my extreme interest in Mrs. Susan Ethington listed above. Thanks for your time, Marie

    1. Etheringtons of London

    3. I was wondering if any of the following names ring a bell with anyone. In 1857 Thomas ETHERINGTON married Annie ETHERINGTON at St Bride's, Fleet Street, London. Thomas and Annie emigrated to Australia, where they had a number of children who died young, and only one daughter who survived to 18. Then Thomas died, and finally Annie died in 1928. In her will Annie left some bequests to her family that I am hoping might ring a bell with someone. "my nephew William Christopher Etherington of Tooting London 50 pounds. To his brothers Harry George and James and his sisters Mrs Mary Russel, Mrs Edith Smith and Mrs Anne (RECKNELL ?) ten pounds and to his mother Mrs Elizabeth Etherington ten pounds. To my niece Mrs Sarah Rowlinson of Western Australia 25 pounds and her daughter Eliza 25 pounds. To my niece Mrs Alf Grubb Adelaide, South Australia, 25 pounds." Sound familiar to anyone? 1. Margaret Meredith Etherton Umsted
    2. This is a long shot. I am trying to make a connection between a Margaret Etherton-Umsted and a Margaret Meredith, that married a James Etherton ca 1825. I have a Margaret Etherton that married William Umsted 1843 in Greene Co., TN. There was a James Etherton,in 1850 Greene Co., TN census, age 25, that I think was Margaret's son. Were there any MEREDITHs in Greene Co., TN ca 1845 ? Researching: DURRANT*HANSON*OLSEN=HUSSEY*POTTS*UMSTED=WELTY*WILLEY* WILSON+++++Random Acts Of Kindness Volunteer
