I thought that the history that I studied in high school was interesting enough, but at the time, I didn't make the personal connection between American history and my own family history. It never occurred to me that those people who were clearing virgin land, building log cabins, fighting Indians and the King (or the Rebels - yes, I had them on both sides) were my ancestors. The study of US history would have been much more immediate and exciting had I realized that, in a sense, I was there!
