I am the 4g grandson of Matthew Etheridge born 1785 in NC, and wife Sarah. My line is through Tilghman (sometimes spelled Tillman) born 1811 in TN. After over a month of serious research I remain stuck and cannot go back beyond Matthew 1785 in NC. I have found another Matthew Etheridge born 1785 in NC. Yep, 2 of the same name born in the same year in the same state. What are the odds of that!? Have given some thought that they might be the same person ... but cannot find enough common ground to work the idea. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had given some thought of the possibility of these 2 Matthew Etheridges being the same person. But, cannot find anything to add to what I think. Author: EllenHulbert51 Surnames: Ethridge Etheridge Beck Manning Davis Clark Wilk(e)s Broom Flowers Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.etheridge/624/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Ethridge/Etheridge Family of Northwest Florida will hold their annual reunion on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 10 am - 4 pm CST at the Kinard Park Public Library, 5416 SW SR 73, Kinard, Calhoun County, Florida. (The Kinard Park Public Library is the old school.) Any Ethridge/Etheridge descendants and friends are encouraged to attend and bring pictures, stories and a covered dish of their favorite recipe. This is the family line of Samuel Ethridge/Etheridge (@1808 - @1885), who married Lucinda Grantham (1813 - @1850) in 1837 in Early County, Georgia. He and Lucinda had James (@1838), Arlenas (@1839), Ann (@1843), Martha Jane (1845 - 1914), Nancy (@1847), and John (@1849). Lucinda died sometime during 1849/1850. Samuel then married Sarah Ducker Goodwin (@1817 - @1863)in 1859 in Decatur County, Georgia, and had Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905). Samuel and Sarah briefly lived in Jackson County, FL and Henry (now Houston) County, AL. Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge died sometime prior to 1863. Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott (a married name - her maiden name unknown) in Calhoun County, Florida in 1863. He died sometime between 1880 and 1885 in Calhoun County, Florida, his burial place is unknown. Little is currently known of Samuel and Lucinda's children, James, Arlenas, Ann, Nancy, and John. There are theories but none proven. Samuel and Lucinda's daughter Martha married William Henry Beck (1843-1887) in 1865 in Calhoun County, Florida. Samuel was living in the home of his daughter Martha and husband William Henry in Calhoun County as recorded in the 1880 census report. Martha and William Henry remained in Calhoun County, FL until their deaths. Their children were Elizabeth (1869), Nancy (1872-1952) Hennie (?), Jesse Samuel 1877-1973), Kizzie M (1879), Tony (1882-1916), Henry Florance (1883), and Edith (1886-1963). Their descendants are many with surnames of Beck, Manning, Clifton, Clark, Wilkes, and Dalton, to name some. Enoch, son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Ducker Goodwin Ethridge, traveled westward to Pensacola, Escambia County, FL sometime between 1870 and 1880. He died in Milton, Santa Rosa County, FL on 26 Jun 1894. He married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) in Covington, AL @ 1870. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959), Sarah Francis (1877-1958), Isaac Samuel (1880-1962), Mary Elizabeth (1883-1967), Nancy Ann (1886-1943), John Daniel (1888-1965), Ellen Jane (1892-1963). Enoch and Nancy Ann also had many descendants with surnames Fowler, Reimels, Grimes, Hart, Mayhair, Ward, Manning, Cross, Whitfield, Lovett, Bray, and Hutchins, to name some. Samuel and Sarah's daughter Francis Lucinda married Wylie A. Kent (1839-@1910) in Calhoun County, in 1873. Their children were Samuel William (1874), Sophronia (1876), Lucinda V. (1886-1938), Wylie S (1893), and Martha J. (1895). Their descendants have the following surnames Flowers, Broom, Kelley, and Rogers, to name some. Isaac Samuel, son of Samuel and Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge, married Henrietta Davis Burke (1850-@1930), in 1878 in Calhoun County, Florida, where they remained until their deaths. Their children were Isaac Henry (1879-1967), James M. "Uncle Boss" (1881-1962), Rewen Charly (1882-@1900), Minnie (1883-1883), Lewis Ellis (1888-1974), and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Isaac Samuel and Henrietta had lots of descendants as well. Some of the surnames are Pope, Fitzsimmons, Kirkland, Thomas, Burns, Capps, and Reed. Hatteras Island is the location where the Lost Colonists indicated that they went, to join their friends, the Croatoan Indians. . Hatteras Island has a long history of shipwrecks, with many families carrying the oral history that they descend from shipwreck victims. . Hatteras Island has an equally long oral history that many of the current residents descend from the original residents, the Croatoan (later the Hatteras) Indians. . Early records confirm his history in various ways. For example, by 1710, the Farrows, O'Neals, Hoopers and Wahabs were reported to be "half Indian and half English". . The isolated geography of Hatteras Island served to discourage a lot of movement to the island after the initial land grants were awarded and free/cheap land was no longer available. . The isolated geography prevented or discouraged intermarriage with people not island residents, creating a rather closed community, allowing us the unique opportunity to reconstruct the original island residents from their descendants today. I have compiled a list of early island surnames from deeds, wills, tax lists, militia and other documents. These surnames represent the early island residents up through about 1800. We would like to be able to reconstruct the ethnicity of the earliest island families, especially the wives whose surnames have been lost to time. Using DNA, we will be able to reconstruct those families and help people who cannot identify their ancestors' families to reconnect.
