David, It sure would be unusual not to have witnesses to the sale, wouldn't it? I'll have to look at the original and not the transcription to see why it said no witnesses listed. The name Mariah is not uncommon to this line, but not until after Elisha Jr. married Mariah Bingham which took place the year before. His brother John also married a Mariah (Daniel). Must've been a popular name back then. A couple of months earlier (in August), Elisha Jr. and Elizabeth (Golding) Estes had sold adjacent land to this same John McClamrock. Elizabeth's daughter Jenny married a man named John McClamrock in 1802, probably the same guy. Anyway, my point was that Elisha Jr. was still around and his wife Mariah wouldn't have remarried by then. All the children of Elisha Sr. and Elizabeth seem to have itchy feet cause by 1820 they are all over the place. Mine went to Tennessee then Illinois, others went to Missouri, and I recently learned that James may have gone to Texas. (If its the correct James). But, Caty sure would be a strange nickname for Mariah. I've been looking for Catherines but can't find any nearby. Thanks for your thoughts, April >The two lists of names are similar but not identical, with 3 more names >in the first list than the last .. so the 2nd list could be witnesses, >even if not specified as such? > >Or Caty could be Mariah Wood, as you suggest. Not that all deeds etc follow the same exact format. :) One always finds differences. > A couple of months earlier (in August), Elisha Jr. and Elizabeth > (Golding) Estes had sold adjacent land to this same John McClamrock. > Elizabeth's daughter Jenny married a man named John McClamrock in 1802, > probably the same guy. I've come across quite a lot of cases where either teh husband or the wife walked out and both or either promptly remarried .. technically bigamy, but back then who cared? cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J.
