    1. [ESTES-L] William Winn Cockerham and Nancy Estes
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day folks, I've been thinking of which Nancy Estes married William Winn Cockerham. All that I have to go on is the following: : William Winn COCKERHAM, b. 1748, d. 1818 Pendleton Dist, SC : m2 Nancy ESTES, dtr/o Elisha ESTES of Lunenburg, m. 20 Jun : 1793. Their children were Patsy, Elisha, Kitty, & Polly Patsy is actually Martha and Polly is Mary. Anyone know what Kitty was the pet name for? Catherine?? William's first wife was Edith Stone, d/o Richard and Mary Stone. I'm not sure but I think this is the same couple who're the parents of the famous or infamous (depending on whether you're a descendent I guess!) Mary Stone-Townsend-Estes. Which suggests a connection with that family .. tho' this is not necessesarily so. The above quote comes, I believe, from "Southern Historical Families", by J. B. Boddie - which has come in for a bit of flack lately for being innacurate. But taking it at what it's worth .. we're looking for an Elisha Estes who was living in Lunenburg Co, VA sometime during the late 1700's. Who're the candidates? The first one shouldn't come as a surprise I guess ... Elisha Estes, born 1754, married Mary Hord/Herd and possibly (probably?) as his first wife married Margaret/Marget. According to an unverified source, Elisha and Margaret/Mary had a daughter, Nancy. This ELisha was born in Lunenburg Co, VA, but by the mid 1770's he was living in Franklin/Henry Co, VA where he remained until about 1805 when he moved to KY (thank's to Li Ann for tracking his movements). His daughter, Nancy, assuming she esisted is a possibility .. however there's no other SC connection with that family and Nancy would have to have been a pretty young bride. Elisha likely married around 1777, so nancy would've been 15 or younger when she married, presuming she was Elisha's first child. The father of the above Elisha, Elisha Sr, born 1729, is another candidate. he was also in Lunenburg Co, VA for a time .. however he would not have been known as "Elisha of Lunenburg Co" since he spent only a few years there. Also there's no mention of a daughter, Nancy, in his will. The only other candidate I have is the Elisha who'se been recently suggested (by garmon Estes & others) as being the son of John Estes (1701-1771). This Elisha married a Jane and was in Halifax Co, VA from 1771-1779. Halifax Co borders Lunenburg. I have no idea when this Elisha was born so couldn't say if he was too old or not. David. -- I bless the day I met you and I thank God that he let you lay beside me for a moment that lives on and the good news is I'm better for the time we spent together and the bad news is you're gone. - "You're Gone", Diamond Rio DC2.D A+++!
