Tx. 1857-1981 Contributed to USGen Web Archives by: Margaret Bates (mebates@swbell.net) When James Estes and his family moved to the Mansfield-Webb area in the mid-1850's, little did he know he would be burying his wife, Sarah. She died 16 Apr 1857 and was the first to be buried in what is now known as Estes Cemetery. James Estes set aside on acre of land as burial land for his family. A few days after his wife died, his granddaughter, Mary A. Estes, was buried 22 Apr 1857. Another granddaughter, Texana T. Estes, was buried alongside his wife Sarah. Filed 29 Nov 1865 11. Charles Fenton Mercer Colony. Numerous families from Missouri came with the Mercer Colony. Mr. Mercer contracted with the State of Texas on Jan. 29, 1844, purpose to colonize Texas. Family sections were 640 acres. Contract stated that the number of families settled in each of the five years succeeding the date hereof shall not be less than 100. Family defined and .........., or two single men over the age of 17 (each would get 320 acres). 12. Hiram M. Estes, his sons, Aaron and George W., all came with the Mercer Colony. They came from Gasconard Co. Missouri, the same place James and Sarah Laughlin were living when they set out for Texas. Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to put all the evidence in one place. I welcome any comments or advise on what is lacking to add William S/L Estes and John Estes as sons of James and Sarah Estes. Diane Miller
